Be it known that I, Aueosr Boonnscrrarz, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new. and useful Improvement in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is directed to an improvement in locks and is well adapted for use, for instance, as a safety lock for the covers of centrifugals. V
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of means for locking a cover of an apparatus in place whereby the same may not be opened as long as another partof the device is in operation.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a safety lock in which a stationary member may be locked against movement and so held as long as another member co-operating with the stationary member is in motion.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a safety lock in which a stationary member is locked against movement and so held as long as a rotary member which co-operates with the stationary meniber is being rotated.
A still further object of the present inventionis the provision of a safety lock adapted for use in connection with centrifugals in which the cover of the centrifugal cannot be unlocked as long as the centrifugal basket is rotating.

designates the rotor or basket of a centrifugal, while 2 designates a stationary (so far as rotation is concerned) cover therefor. 3 is the stationary tub within which the basket 1 is rotated. It is the purpose of the embodiment herein illustrated to provide means for locking the cover 2 in place, specifically, looking it to the tub 3, so as to prevent opening'the cover to thereby expose the centrifugal basket as long as the basket is in rotation.
Securely attached in any suitable manner to the stationary tub 3 is a lock casing or box 4. W'ithin this casingv and pivoted on a fixed stud or pivot 5 therein is a lock keeper or bolt 6, which is adapted to engage a notch 7 provided for that purpose in the centrifugal cover 2. The pivot or fulcrum 5 for the keeper 6 is so disposed that when thekeeper is rocked about its pivot it will move into and out of the notch 7 radially with respect to the cover.
Intermediate the fulcrum 5 and its lower or notch-engaging end, the keeper or bolt 6 is provided with a boss 8 receiving a pin or pivot 9 extending parallel to the fulcrum 5, this boss and pin providing a convenient construction for pivotally attaching a lockcontrolling lever 10 to the bolt. The lever 10 being pivoted to the bolt or keeper 6, and the latter in turn being pivoted, the bolt 9 provides a floating or movable fulcrum for the lever.
The lock-controlling lever above its pivot or fulcrum provided by the pin 9 carries a coil spring 11 engaging one wall of the lock casing 4 to thereby hold the lever and hence the keeper 6 to which it is attached in active or locking position.
To the end of the lever 10 adjacent the keeper-fulcrum" 5 is attached an operating rod 12 which extends out through the lock casing 4, its protruding end being provided with a knob 13 by which the rod may be actuated.
To the lowerend of the lock-controlling lever 10, that is, to the end adjacent the periphery of the centrifugal basket 1, is attached an oscillatory pawl 14. A-s'pring 15 is provided at this pawl and normally presses the pawl against a stop pin 16 with which the lever is provided. The position assumed by thepawiunde1-n1e action of the spring 15" is i llustrated in Fig. 3;
The operation of the locking device is as follows:
IVhen the machine is in operation with the cover in place, the parts are in the position shown on Fig. 1, in which the lock keeper or bolt has entered the notch 7 in the cover, to hold the same locked in position. With the centrifugal basket still rotating the rod 12 may be actuated to the right by the knob 13 in an attempt to rock the lower end of the keeper 6 out of the notch 7. It will be apparent, however, that the lock-controlling lever will first of all rock about its pivot 9, without imparting any movement to the keeper 6, until the pawl 1% reaches the position shown in Fig. 3, that is, until the pawl engages the rotating periphery of the basket 1. As soon as this pawl engages the basket it is pushed to one side thereby, as will be obvious, against the action of the spring 15, and continued movement of the lever 10 until it reaches the end of its travel and strikes the wall of the lock easing 1, results only in more and more movement to one side of the pawl 1 f, until the latterreaches the posit-ion of Fig. 4. The keeper 6, however, has not moved at all so far and consequently the cover 2 has remained locked. Therefore it will be obvious that inasmuch as the entire locking mechanism is enclosed, the knob 13 being the only part thereof which is ex posed, the cover cannot be unlocked as long as the basket 1 is rotating.
Assuming new that the basket is stopped, a pull on the knob 13 will rock the lever 10 into position to bring the pawl l-l into ongagement with the periphery of the basket, and as the basket is stationary the pawl on this operation will not be pushed to one side but will remain in position, so as to become a fulcrum for the lever 10, with the result that continued movement of this lever about the pawl as a fulcrum will rock the bolt or keeper 6 about its fulcrum to disengage it from the notch 7 to thereby unlock the cover 2.
It will be seen, therefore, that the invention herein embodies a lock keeper or boltcontrolling lever provided with two fulcrums, the fulcrum 9 and the pawl 14, one fulcrum being available when the basket 1 is rotating, the other when the basket is stationary.
It will be apparent also that when the fulcrum 9 is the active or available fulcrum, movement of the lever 10 about the same has no effect upon the lock keeper, but when the fulcrum 14: is active or available, rocking of the lever 10 will free the cover.
It is to be understood that the present invention has a wide range of use and is not confined merely to application to centrifugal machines.
It is to be understood also that changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts herein shown and described within the purview of the invention.
W hat I claim is:
1.. In a centrifugal comprising a centrifubasket and a cover therefor, a lock for the cover comprising in combination a lock casing, a keeper pivoted to the interior of said casing and engageable with said cover, a lock controlling lever pivoted to said keeper, means for operating said lever from the exterior of said lock casing, and means controlled by said lever and engageable with said basket whereby when the basket is rotating said lock controlling lever may be moved ndependently of said keeper.
2. In a centrifugal comprising a cover and a rotatable basket, a lock casing, a keeper pivoted thereto and engageable with the cover of the centrifugal, a lock controlling lever pivoted to said keeper, an operating handle for said lever extending through said casing to the exterior thereof, a pawl carried by said lever and engageable with said hasket whereby when the basket is stationary operation of said lever from the exterior of the casing will release said keeper.
3. In a centrifugal comprising a basket, a cover therefor, a look casing, a keeper pivoted interiorly of said lock casing, a lock controlling lever pivoted on said keeper, a pawl pivoted to the lower end of said lever, an operating handle for said lever extending through the wall of said casing to the exterior thereof, whereby when the lock controlling lever is manipulated from the exterior of said casing while the centrifugal basket is rotating to bring said pawl into engagement with the periphery of said hasket the pawl will be moved to one side to prevent actuation of said keeper.

In a centrifugal comprising a rotatable basket and a cover, an enclosed lock casing attached to said centrifugal adjacent said cover, a keeper pivotally mounted within said casing and engageable with a notch in the peripheryof said cover to prevent movement of the cover, a lock controlling lever within said casing and pivoted to said keeper, a handle for operating said lever, said handle extending through the wall of said lock casing to the exterior thereof, a pawl pivotally mounted on the lower end of said lever and a spring also carried by said lever and co-operating with said pawl to maintain the same in position, whereby when said lever is rocked about its pivot, said pawl will be carried into engagement with said basket to release said keeper.
5.
