14 Claims. (Cl. 70153)' This: invention. relates as. indicated to a novel door lock, and" more particularly to a door lock which is very simple; to operate.
In: many circumstances, it is desired to provide door latching means. which may quickly be operated by a person whose hands are not free and wherein the same motion required to unlatch the door will also be effective to swing the dooropen. For these and other reasons, latches of the push-pull type are becoming increasingly popular in various installations, the door being mounted to. swing open in. the direction of inward movement of the push handle: required to retract the latch. A pull exerted on the pull side is, of course, equally effective both first to retract thelatch and. then to swing the door open. In: many installations, it is desirable to provide locking 'means selectively operative to secure the latch against withdrawal. through actuation of at least one such handle.
It is accordingly a principal object of my invention to provide a novel latch of the push-pull operated type,
which latch is adapted. to be secured against retraction by. operation of one of such handles, together with key operated lock means operative thus. to retract the latch,
whereby the latch may also serve as a locking bolt.
Another object of this invention is to provide such combined push-pull latch and key operated bolt means which is relatively compact and inexpensive of construction.
Another object i'sto provide such latch and lock means particularly adapted for installation in a swinging door hung to swingopen in one direction only.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related end's, said invention then comprises the features hereinafter fully describedand particularly pointed out in the claims, the following description and the annexed drawing setting forth indetail certain illustrative embodiments of the invention, these being indicative, however, of but a few of the various ways in which the principle of the invention may be employed.

Now referring more particularly to said drawing, the embodiment of my invention there illustrated comprises a latch of the pusl1-pull type. combined with tumbler lock means operative to retract the latch even when. one of the operating handles has been manually rendered inoperative. Such latch and lock assembly is shown installed within the veitical stile 1 of a sheet metal door of the type frequently utilized in hospitals and other:
public buildings. Such assembly comprises a sheet metal stamping 2 provided with a cover plate 3 to form a rectangular box fitting snugly within stile 1. Outer face plates 4' and 5 are secured to the respective outer sides of the stile, a push handle 6 being pivotally secured at its upper end to such plate 4 and a pull handle 7 being similarly pivotally connected to plate 5 at its lower end.
The latch bolts S and 9 are adapted to project in the usual manner through face plate l0 and are carried by pins 11 and 12 mounted for axial reciprocation in bracket Compression springs 1 .4 and 15 encircle pins Il 13. and 12 respectively and are interposed between the respective bolts and brackets 13 so that they serve to hold such bolts normally in projected position. Bolt 8 is adapted to serve as a pick-proof device of standard well-known design, the associated internal mechanism not being illustrated in Fig. 3 in order to avoid obscuring portions of the mechanism with which the invention is concerned. Such pick-proof device constitutes no part of the present invention although it may, as indicated, be utilized in conjunction therewith.
A bridge 16 is secured to the end of pin 12 and carries an upstanding finger l7 and a pin 18 aligned with pin 12 and constitutes in effect an axial extension thereof fitted for reciprocation in bracket 19. A pull on handle 7 serves to rock the latter about its lower pivotal connection 20 to cause depending finger 21 to engage one end of generally arcuate lever 22 mounted for oscillation about pivot 23. The other end of such lever bears against upstanding finger 17 and when thus rocked serves to push such finger to the right as viewed in Fig.v
3, thereby to retract bolt 9 against the force of compres sion spring 15.
A tumbler lock cylinder 24 is threaded into a spindle 25, such cylinder and spindle being held against rotation in the usual manner by means of a key 26 passing through a closely fitting slot in such spindle and engagingin agroove 27 in the tumbler cylinder, such key being advanced into. locking position by means of screw 28 supported and held against substantial axial shifting by bracket 29.
A sleeve 30 is rotatably mounted on spindle 25 and inward pressure exerted on handle 6 serves to rock lever 3 33 to rotate sleeve 30 and thereby shift finger 17 to the right as viewed "in Fig. 3 to retract bolt 9.
A push button device is provided to render one of the handles inoperative thus to withdraw the bolt. In the embodiment illustrated, two push buttons 37 and 38 (Figs. 3 and 7) are connected adjacent their inner ends by lever 39 pivoted at 40 so that when one button is pushed in, the other will automatically be projected. A slide 41 is connected to button 37 and adapted to be reciprocated thereby, such slide having a rebent cam end portion 42. An angular latch member 43 is mounted for oscillation about pivot 44 with a compression spring 45 tending normally to rock the other end of the lever downwardly to disengage lug portion 46 from notch 47 in sleeve 30. When button 37 is pushed in, however, it advances slide 41 to engage and cam upwardly the end of lever 43 to engage lug 46 in notch 47 and thereby render push handle 6 inoperative to retract bolt 9.
A second sleeve 48 having a radially extending flange 49 is rotatably fitted on spindle 2S and cut away to provide a radially projecting face portion 50 corresponding to similar face 31 on sleeve 30 and likewise adapted to engage finger 17. The dog 51 on the keyway plug of the tumbler lock cylinder 24 extends through a window in spindle 25 and through a shorter aperture 52 in sleeve 48. Accordingly, when the cylinder lock is turned by means of the usual key, dog 51 is operative to rotate sleeve 48 and its flange portion 49 to retract bolt 9 even though push handle 6 may have been rendered inetfective to do so as a result of pushing in button 37.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, however, the combined lock and latch means is devised to ensure that the door may always be opened from one side without need of a key regardless of whether push button 37 has been operated, but that when such push button has been thus operated it will be impossible to open the door from the other side without use of a key. Moreover, the tumbler lock spindle is utilized as a pivot for my two bolt retracting sleeves, thereby aifording a particularly compact and etficient assembly, the movement of the push handle being translated first into rotary movement and then again into reciprocatory motion to retract the bolt.
Other modes of applying the principle of the invention may be employed, change being made as regards the details described, provided the features stated in any of the following claims or the equivalent of such be employed.

In a swinging door latch of the push-pull operated type, having a movable pull handle on one side and a movable push handle on the other side; a spring-extended latch member, lever means arranged for actuation by said pull handle to retract said latch member, a key operated tumbler type cylinder lock accessible from the push handle side of the door only, a rotatable sleeve encircling said lock, a projection on said sleeve adapted to engage an inner extension of said latch member when rotated to retract the same, lever means operable by said push handle to engage a projection on said sleeve to rotate the latter to retract said latch member, latch means manually operable from the door edge releasably to latch said sleeve against rotation and thereby render said push handle inoperative, a second sleeve encircling said lock, a radially outwardly projecting dog on the keyway plug of said lock cylinder adapted to engage said second sleeve to turn the latter, and a projection on said second sleeve adapted to engage said inner extension of said latch member when thus turned to retract the latter.
2. In a swinging door latch of the push-pull operated type, having a pivoted outwardly swinging pull handle on one side, a pivoted inwardly swinging push handle on.
the other side, a latch member protruding from the adjacent door edge, spring means urging said latch member to extended position, and lever means arranged for actuation by said pull handle to retract said latch member against the force of said spring; a key operated tumbler type cylinder lock accessible and operable from the push handle side of the door only, a stationary generally cylindrical spindle attached thereto and within which the lock barrel and cylinder of the lock cylinder are secured, a first sleeve rotatably mounted on said spindle having a projection thereon adapted to engage an inner extension of said latch member whenrotated to retract the same, another projection on said sleeve, lever means operable by said push handle to engage said latter projection to rotate said sleeve to retract said latch member, latch means manually operable from the door edge releasably to latch said sleeve against rotation and thereby render said push handle inoperative, a second sleeve rotatably mounted on said spindle having a projection thereon adapted to engage said inner extension of said'latch member when rotated to retract the same, and a radially outwardly projecting dog on the lock barrel of said lock cylinder rotatable therewith to engage said second sleeve to turn the latter to retract said latch member.
3. In a swinging door latch of the push-pull operated type, having a pivoted outwardly swinging pull handle on one side, a pivoted inwardly swinging push handle on the other side, a latch member protruding from the adjacent door edge, spring means urging said latch member to extended position, and means interconnecting one of said handles with said latch member for retraction of the latter against the force of said spring; a key operated tumbler type cylinder lock and a stationary generally cylindrical spindle within which the lock barrel and cyl-' inder of the lock cylinder are secured, a first sleeve rotatably mounted on said spindle having a projection thereon adapted to engage an inner extension of said latch member when rotated to retract the same, another projection on said sleeve, means operable by the other of said handles to engage said latter projection to rotate said sleeve to retract said latch member, latch means manually operable from the door edge releasably to latch said sleeve against rotation and thereby render said other handle inoperative, a second sleeve rotatably mounted on said spindle having a projection thereon adapted to engage said inner extension of said latch member when rotated to retract the same, and a radially outwardly projecting dog on the lock barrel of said lock cylinder rotatable therewith to engage said second sleeve to turn the latter to retract said latch member.
4. In a swinging door latch of the push-pull operated type, having a pivoted outwardly swinging pull handle on one side, a pivoted inwardly swinging push handle on the other side, a latch member protruding from the adjacent door edge for reciprocation at right angles to such swinging movement of said handles, spring means urging said latch member to extended position, and means interconnecting one of said handles with said latch member for retraction of the latter against the force of said spring; a key operated lock having a dog rotatable by means of such key, latch-engaging means pivotally mounted for rotation about an axis adjacent and parallel to that of said dog and engageable by the latter for rotation therewith to retract said latch member, a second latch-engaging member pivotally mounted for rotation about the same axis as said first latch-engaging means and operative when rotated to retract said latch member, means operable by the other of said handles to engage said second latch-engaging member to rotate the same, and latch means manually operable from the door edge releasa'bly to latch said second latch-engaging means against rotation and thereby render the said other handle inoperative, said key operated lock being accessible from the same side of said door as said other handle.
5. In a swinging door latch of the push-pull operated type, having a pivoted outwardly swinging pull handle on one side, apivoted inwardly swinging push handle on the other side, a latch member protrudingfrom the adjacent door edge for reciprocation at right angles to such" swinging, movement of said handles, spring means urging said latch member to extended position, and means interconnecting one of said handles with said latch member forretraction of the latter against the force of said spring; a key operated lock having" a dog rotatableby means of such key, latch-retracting means engageable by said dog to retract said latch member when said dog is rotated, a latch-retracting member pivotally mounted for rotation about an axis adjacent and parallel to that of said dog and operative When rotated to retract said latch member, meansoperable by theo-ther of" said handles to engage said pivotally mounted latch-retracting member to rotate the same, and latch means manually operable from the door edge releasalbly to latch said pivotally mounted latch-retracting member against rotation and thereby render the said other handle inoperative, said key operated lock being accessible from the same side of said door as said other handle.
6. In a door latch of the push-pull operated type, having an outwardly movable pull handle on one side, an inwardly movable push handle on the other side, a latch member protruding from the adjacent door edge for reciprocation at right angles to such movement of said handles, resilient means urging said latch member to extended position, and means interconnecting one of said handles with said latch member for retraction against the force of said resilient means; a key operated lock having a dog rotatable by means of such key, latch-retracting means pivotally mounted for rotation about an axis closely adjacent and parallel to that of said dog and engageable by the latter for rotation therewith to retract said latch member, a second latch-engaging member pivotally mounted for rotation about the same general axis as said first latch-engaging means and operative when rotated to retract said latch member, means operable by the other of said handles to engage said second latch-engaging member to rotate the same, and latch means manually operable from the door edge releasably tolatch said second latch-engaging means against rotation and thereby render the said other handle inoperative, said key operated lock being accessible from the same side of said door as said other handle.
7. In a door latch of the push-pull operated type, having an outwardly movable pull handle on one side, an inwardly movable push handle on the other side, a latch member protruding from the adjacent door edge for reciprocation at right angles to such movement of said handles, and resilient means urging said latch member to extended position; key-operated lock means rotatable by means of such key, said lock means being operative when rotated to retract said latch member, a latch-retracting member pivotally mounted for rotation about an axis adjacent and parallel to that of said lock means and operative when rotated to retract said latch member, means operable by one said handle to retract said latch member, means operable by the other of said handles to engage said pivotal latch-retracting member to rotate the same to retract said latch member, and latch means manually operable from the door edge releasably to latch said pivotally mounted latch-retracting member against rotation and thereby render the said other handle inoperative, said key-operated lock being accessible from the same side of said door as said other handle.
8. In a door latch of the push-pull operated type, having an outwardly movable pull handle on one side, an inwardly movable push handle on the other side, a latch member adapted to protrude from an adjacent door edge, resilient means urging said latch member to extended position, and means interconnecting one of said handles with said latch member for retraction against the force of said resilient means; a key operated lock assembly having an operating member rotatable by turning of such key, latch-retracting means engageable by said operating member to retract said latch member, a latch-engaging member pivotally mounted for rotation about an 6 axis parallel to and closely adjacent that of said oper ating member and operative. when rotated to retract said latch member, means operable by the. other of said handles to engage said latch-engaging. member to rotate. the same, and means manually operable from the. door edge to render one of said handles inoperative, said key operated lock being accessible from the same side of the door as said latter handle.
9. In a door latch including a latchmember adapted to protrude from an adjacent door edge, resilient means urging said latch member to extended position, and a handle reciprocable at right angles to such door and the direction of reciprocation of said latch member; a key operated lock assembly accessible only from the other side of such door from said handle and mounted in a spindle and having an operating member rotatable by turning of such key, latch-retracting means engageable by said operating member to retract said latch member, a latch-engaging member pivotally mounted on said spindle for rotation about an axis closely adjacent and parallel to that of said operating member and operative when rotated to retract said latch member, and means operable by said handle to engage said latch-engaging member to rotate the same.
10. In a door latch including a latch member adapted to protrude from an adjacent door edge, resilient means urging said latch member to extended position, and a handle reciprocable at right angles to such door and the direction of reciprocation of said latch member; a key operated lock assembly mounted in a spindle and having an operating member rotatable by turning of such key, latch-retracting means engageable by said operating member to retract said latch member, a latch-engaging member pivotally mounted on said spindle for rotation about an axis closely adjacent and parallel to that of said operating member and operative when rotated to retract said latch member, means operable by said handle to engage said latch-engaging member to rotate the same, and means operable to render said handle inoperative.
11. The latch assembly of claim 10, wherein said means operative to render said handle inoperative is manually actuable from the door edge.
12. The latch assembly of claim 10, wherein said means operative to render said handle inoperative is manually actuable from the door edge, and said lock is accessible from the same side of the door as said handle.
13. In a door latch of the push-pull operated type, having an outwardly movable pull handle on one side, an inwardly movable push handle on the other side, a latch member adapted to protrude from an adjacent door edge for reciprocation at right angles to such movement of said handles, and means interconnecting one of said handles with said latch member for reciprocation thereof; a key operated lock assembly having an operating member rotatable by turning of such key, latch-retracting means pivotally mounted for rotation about an axis adjacent and parallel to that of said operating member and engageable by the latter for rotation therewith to retract said latch member, a latch-engaging member pivotally mounted for rotation about the same general axis as said latch-retracting means and operative when rotated to retract said latch member, means operable by the other of said handles to engage said latch-engaging member to rotate the same, latch means manually operable to latch said latch-engaging means against rotation and thereby render the said other handle inoperative, said key operated lock being accessible from the same side of said door as said other handle.
14. In a door latch including a latch member adapted to protrude from an adjacent door edge, resilient means urging said latch member to extended position, and a handle reciprocable at right angles to such door and the direction of reciprocation of said latch member; a key operated lock assembly mounted in a spindle and having an operating member rotatable by turning of such key,
