DOOR LOCK.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OscAn M. SCHIL- LINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Locks; and. I do declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a door lock having a member which serves both as latch and bolt, and which may be positively locked.
Briefly, the iHXGlllZlOll comprises a lock casing containing a gravity-operated member having a projecting latch and bolt memher, a knob-operating means being provided to withdraw said member, and a positivelylocked bolt being provided to retain said member in locked position when desired. A member is also provided which serves as a positively operating night latch.

As will appear, the lock is entirely devoid of springs.
A rectangular casing 10 is provided with a retaining plate 12, the latter having a.
latch opening 1 1-, housing the gravity-operated plate 15. This member has an extension 115 at its upper end, which is pivoted to the casing at 16, at one side of the center of gravity of the member. On the opposite side from the center of gravity the plate is provided with a projecting latch and bolt member 18, which passes through the hole 14, the outward movement being limited by means of a lug 20. The uppermost portion of the plate 15 opposite the pivot 16 is provided with a projecting arm 22 for opening purposes. This arm 22 is adapted to be engaged by a finger 2 1 on a lever 25, carried by a hub 26, journalled in the casing walls and having an opening 28 to receive the shaft 29 of the knob K for rotation of said sleeve 26. The arm 22 is also adapted to be engaged by a finger 30 on a lever 32, positioned behind the lever 25 and pivoted in the casing at 34, said lever 32 having a nose 35 adapted to be engaged by a lug 36, also on said sleeve 26. Thus, when the sleeve 26 is turned by the knob toward the left, as in Fig. 3, the lug 36 engages the nose to throw the finger 80 up against the arm 22 and withdraw the latch 18. When the knob is turned in the opposite direction, the finger 2% is thrown upward directly into engagement with said arm 22, which also withdraws the latch 18. In this manner, turning the knob in either direction withdraws the latch 18.
A night latch 40, mounted on a pivoting stem 42 journalled in the casing 10, is adapted to rest against a rivet 414: when in unlocked position, and to swing against the shoulder 15 on the plate 15 to hold the plate in looking position, This latch is adapted to be operated by means of a handle 16 on the inside of the door. A bolt is slidably mounted in the bottom of the casing, its upper edge being guided by means of a pin 52. A rivet 54, which cooperates with the rivet 4- 1 and with the pivot pin 16 for retaining the cover on the casing 10, is adapted to be received in a slot in the bolt 50 when the latter is in locked position. The upper edge of said bolt is provided with a projection 56, adapted to engage a shoulder 58 on the plate 15 toprevent withdrawal of the latter. A web 150, integral with the bolt 50, is adapted to be key-operated and carries a stud 60, movable in a slot 62 in a gravity-operated tumbler plate 64;, vertically slidable in the casing by means of a slot 65 therein, which receives a guide pin 66. The slot 62 has a pair of spaced notches 68, one of which is adapted to receive the stud 60 when in locked position, and the. other to receive said stud when in unlocked position. The casing 10 is provided with a key slot to receive a key 72, the stem of which has its end portion reduced at 74, where it carries the operating web 75. This key when inserted elevates the tumbler 64 and reciprocates the bolt 50 in the usual fashion.
The latch projection 18 of the plate 15 is curved or nosed on each side in order to ride readily over a corresponding projection 80 on a striking plate 82, having a slot 84% to receive said projection 18.
From the foregoing, it'w'ill be seen that I have provided a gravity-operated lock and latch which may be operated by turning a knob in'either direction, which may be positively locked by a bolt, key-operated from either side, and may also be positively locked from the inside by means of a night latch. It will be noted that the latch 18, being curved as above described, does not require reversing.
I claim:
1. A door lock comprising a casing, a gravity-operated latch plate pivoted in the casing at its upper end, anintegral projecting latch on the lower end of the plate,
an arm on said plate, anda pair of fingers pivoted in the casing and adapted to be operated by a knob shaft, one of said fingers being adapted to engage said armwhen the knob is rotated in one direction and the other whenthe knob is rotated in the other direction.
2. A door lock comprising a casing, a
latch member movable with respect to the casing, means for moving saidmember with respect to the casing, said means comprising a member rotatably -mounted in said casing, a pair of fingers of different length securedto said rotatable member, the longer finger engaging a cooperating projection on said latch member, a lever pivoted to said casing and engaging said projection and said shorter finger, the long finger moving the latch member when the rotatable member is turned in one direction, and the short finger and lever moving said latch when the member is rotated in the other direction.
3. A door lock comprising a casing, a gravity-operated latch plate pivoted in the casing at its upper end, a projecting latch on'the lower end of the plate, an arm on said plate, a pair of fingers pivoted'in the casing and adapted to be operated by a knob shaft, one of said fingers being adapted to engage said arm when the knob is rotated in one direction, and the other when the knob is rotated in the other direction, a key-operated bolt slidable in the bottom of the casing and adapted to be moved into the path of the plate to prevent withdrawal thereof, a rotary night latch member adapted to be swung into engagement with one edge of the plate to prevent withdrawal thereof, and an operating member on said n ght latch pro ecting from-one side only of the casing.
