Description

M. BAZILLE. SAFETY LOOK FOR GAR nouns. APPLICATION FILED APR. 10, 1912.
Patented Feb., 9, 1915.
To (swim a a was Be it lmown'that I v Beam, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at 13 Rue Uubain An'gers, Maine-et-Loire, in the Republic of France, locksmith, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Locks for Car-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
his invention rela'tes'to safety locks for car-doors, an'dhas for its object to so construct a look of this character that it will prevent children from Opening the door from the inside. For this purpose, the lock is combined with a locking device which normally locks the inner handle or'one of its members and which only releases the handle when an unlocking member located in the carriage at a heightwhich cannot be reached by children has een operated. Furtherinore, such lock is so fitted as to allow ofthe door being easily e outside as well as from the insid by travelers, while not permitting the door to be acc identally opened by vibration, jarring, or the like. The safety closure is obtained solely by the closing motion of the door and the proper position of the closing members can easily be verified from the inside as well as from the outside.
()ne embodiment of my invention is shown, by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation ofapart of the inside of a car-door provided with the lock according to this. invention. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section through the plane of the lock spindle. Fig. 3 is an elevation ofthe interior of the lock, the inner plate of the lock bein' removed, and Fig. 4 IS a vertical section 0% outside of the door.
Such lock comprises a plate 1 squarely bent to fit the inner angle of the door 2; on such plate is guided an inwardly curved latch 3 which is pushed outwardly by the sprin 4. Such latch can be pushed inwardly eit er by the member5 of the outer handle 6 or by a" two arm lever 7 which is connected with the spindle 8' of'the inner handle 9. The
guided between two lugs 13 integral with the Wemnesramca roe GAE-DOORS.

ing t e rod 11. The upper end of the latter is pivoted to. one of the arms of a bell crank le er 4 he opposi e arm of which is pi oted to a push button 15, protruding a httle beyond the inner face of the door. Under the action of gravitation, the rod 11 falls automatically down in front of the projection 10 and prevents the rotation of the innerhandle 9, so that the door cannot be opened from the inside unless the button 15 be pressed by one hand to raise the rod 11, is acting on the handle 9. Y
16 designates a spring which acts on the member 8 in such a manner as to raise the handle 9 when left tov itselfand 17 indicates The position of the latch is indicated at the outside by the handle. 6 and at the inside by an index 18 integral with the spindle of such handle.
In order to prevent the door from being 0 ened from the outside, the 'lock is provlded with a locking device called a service stopper, comprising a cam 19 secured on the spindle of the outer handle 6 and a rotary abutment 20 which, on being set up straight as shown in the drawing, engages in a corresponding slot in the cam, so as to prevent any rotation of the latter and hence the opening'of the lock. Suchabutment has a square projection 21 which allows of it bein turned from the-outside bymeans of "a suitable keyfl Its rotation" is limited in a projection on; said knob spindle, a rod movable on the door and operable to engage said projection when the inner handle 1s in latch projecting position, a bell crank lever connected with said rod, and a lever-actuating device disposed at .a point remote from r having a latch, inner and outer handles for independently operating said latch,v means for locking said inner handle in latch pro- 7 jecting position, releasing means forsaid locking means located in a plane above the look, a locking device for the outer handle comprising a cam secured to the outer handle, a rotary abutment positioned to be engaged by said cam when said outer handle is in closed position, and key actuated means (in said abutment for releasing said outer handle.
In testimony, that I claimthe foregoing as my invention I-have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CEL BAZILLE.
