M JACKSON COMBINED LATCH AND LOCK.
, 110 516,765. Patented Mar. 20, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
MILTON JACKSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED LATCH AND LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,765, dated March 20, 1894.
Application filed September 14, 1892- Serial No. 445,885- (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a certain Improved Combined Latch and Lock, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple form of lock and latch for doors which will be self-lockin g on the closing of the door, and can be readily unlocked from the inside of the room or apartment, but can be unlocked from the outside only by means of a proper key. This object I attain by combining the old form of pivoted latch with a lock let into the door and having a rotating portion with projection constructed to engage with said latch so as to lift the same sufficiently to free it from engagement with the keeper.
In the accompanying drawings:-Figure 1, is a perspective view of part of a door and door frame showing the lock and latch constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2, is a perspective view showing the latch detached from the door, and illustrating the special construction of lock and latch whereby the lifting of the latter is effected; and Fig. 3, is a view partly in elevation and partly in transverse section on the line 12, Fig. 1.
In Fig. 1, A represents part of a door, and A part of the frame of the same, the door having pivoted to it at a an ordinary form of latch B which is suitably guided in its movements by a yoke or retainer D on the door and is adapted to engage with an inclined or beveled keeper F on the door frame, the latch preferably having a projecting lug or knob b adapted to a slot 12 in the retainer D, whereby said latch may be lifted by handso as to release it from engagement with the keeper in the ordinary manner.
Adapted to an opening in the door is a lock G of any desired character having a rotating barrel G which is provided with a projecting pin d located at some distance from the center of the barrel, and in the inner side of the latch B is a recess f as shown in Fig. 2, with which recess said pin d is adapted to engage so that by rotating the barrel G of the look by means of a suitable key introduced into a key-way therein the latch may be raised so as to free it from engagement with thekeeper. The recess f is open at the bottom, hence the pin (1 will not interfere with the ready lifting of the latch by hand from the inside of the room or apartment, the only means of lifting the latch from the outside of the door, however, being the pin (1 on the rotating barrel of the lock. 7
I am aware that lifting latches have been combined with knob spindles so that the latch could be lifted by turning the knob on either side of the door, but my invention is distinct from this in that it involves the use of a key lock having a rotating barrel'with projection by a person on the inside of the door, it can only be lifted from the outside of the door by the use of a proper key in order to effect the turning of the rotating barrel of the lock.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the pivoted latch and the keeper therefor, with a lock let into the doorto which the latch is hung, said lock having a rotating barrel with projection engaging with the latch in order to lift the same from engagement with the keeper, said latch being adapted to be lifted independently of the rotating barrel from the inside of the door, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of .two subscribing witnesses.
MILTON J AOKSON.
