UNITED %TATE% PATENT @FFllQE.
ALBERT VOIGT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LOCKING DEVICE FOR DOORS.
Application filed March 20, 1914.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ALBERT VOIGT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Looking Devices for Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to latches for doors and the like, in which a spring influenced latch cooperates with a keeper to maintain the door closed, and the latch is maintained against manipulation in latching position by a lock, such as a pad-lock, and it is the ob ject of the invention to provide a latch of this type which is simple and cheap in construction, durable and efficient in operation.
In the drawing accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of a door and its casing showing an embodiment of my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front view of a portion of a door and casing with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 3 is an end elevation showing the latch both in unlatched and latched position. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a section of a casing to support the latch and showing the manner of supporting the latch. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the other casing section. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the latch; and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a keeper for the latch.
Similar characters of reference designate like parts throughout the different views of the drawing.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawing, I have shown the same applied to a door 8 supported to swing on hinges 9 secured to a door casing 10 having a jamb 10. Secured in a mortise in the edge of the door is a casing consisting of a pair of sections 11, 12, the one casing section 11 having flanges 13 adapted to abut against the section 12 and the flanges 13 having cutout portions, as at 15, and the section 12 having flanges 14: to abut against the casing section 11. The sections have alined perforations 16, 1?, for the engagement of screws to secure the casing sections together and which may also serve to secure the easing to the door, and when secured together having openings formed by the cut-out portions 15. Supported by the said sections on a pivot 18 is a latch 19 which may consist of a substantially flat rectangular plate formed Specification of Letters Patent.

with a hook 20 at one end, the plate being of such length that this hooked portion will come within the casing when the latch in latched position and opposite one of the cut-out portions 15 in the casing 11, as clearly shown in Fig. at. The opposite end of the latch is adapted to project through the other opening 15 in the section 11, and has an opening 21 which is adapted to normally register when the latch is in latching position with an opening in a fixed plate 23 juxtaposed to the latch, this plate preferably bein an extended portion of the easing section 12, and in which openings the hasp of a removable key operable lock, such as a pad-lock P, is adapted to engage thereby preventing the manipulation and the unlatching of the latch 19. The latch is normally maintained in latched position by a suitable spring, as
The extended end of the latch preferably has a portion, as at 25, to lap over the op posite side of the plate which has an open ing 21 in line with the opening 21, said latch also having the end turned over, as at 26, (Figs. 1 and 2,) to substantially inclose the plate 23 to prevent tampering with the plate and the prying of the plate 23 and the latch 19 apart. The top edge of the plate 23 is inclined or beveled, (Figs. 3 and 4) to permit of the manipulation of the latch;
The hooked end of the latch is adapted to cooperate with a keeper in the form of a plate 27 secured to the door frame (Fig. 1), said plate having an angular lip 28 adapted to project through openings 29, 29, in the casing sections 11, 12, when the door is closed.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that I not only provide a latch that is normally maintained in latched position by a spring to maintain a door closed, but also provide a latch which is adapted to be locked in latched position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination of a casing; a spring influenced latch pivotally supported substantially centrally thereof within the easing, said latch formed with a hook at one end to cooperate with a keeper, and having an opening adjacent the other end adapted to register with an opening in the casing when in latched position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a casing having a iii laterally projecting portion with an opening therein; a flat latch pivotally supported substantially midway thereof in the casing, said latch formed with a hook at one end and the other end projecting out from the casing to lie contiguous to the case projection and having an opening to register with the opening in the casing projection when in latched position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a locking latch, the combination of a casing adapted to be inortised into a door consisting of a pair of flanged juxtaposed connected sections, one section having a portion to extend in a plane parallel with the sides of the casing and having an opening therein; and a latch pivotally supported substantially midway between its ends between said casing sections, one end of said latch projecting outfroni the casing and having an opening therein adapted to register with the opening in the casing projection when in latched position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
a. In a locking latch, the combination of a casing consisting of a pair of juxtaposed flanged sections, one section having a pro- 7 jecting portion with an opening therein; a
latch pivotally supported between said casing sections, said latch formed with a hook at one end to cooperate with a keeper and having an opening adjacent the other end adapted to register with the opening in the casing projection when in latching position; and a spring within the casing to maintain the latch in latching position.
5. In a locking latch, the combination of a casing having a projecting portion with an opening therein; a latch pivotally supported in said casing formed with a hook at one end to cooperate with a keeper and hav-:
ing an opening adjacent the other end adapted to register with the opening in the casing projection when in latching position, and said end of the latch also having a portion to lap over the top, end and side of the casing projection and said overlapping portion having an opening in line with the opening in the latch.
