Wolfe Attorney, Agent, or Firm-Brown and Martin [57] ABSTRACT A slide type bolt actuated by rotating a knob for normal opening and closing, and incorporating a rotary action of the bolt at the limit of sliding motion to the closed position. The bolt has notched lugs which lock on to a pin in the bolt receiving socket and prevent sliding withdrawal of the bolt. The locking action makes the bolt adaptable to sliding and double doors, as well as conventional single hinged doors.
3 Claims, 10 Drawing Figures ROTARY LOCKING BOLT BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION One common type of security bolt used on kitchen doors and the like has a sliding bolt operated by rotating a knob to actuate a rack and pinion type mechanism. The bolt is usually fitted into the door and the end of the bolt seats in a socket or striker plate in the door jamb. The use is limited to single hinged doors and, unless the clearance between door and jamb is very close, it is possible to force the bolt back. Since this type of bolt is simple to install and operate, it would be advantageous to have a positive locking means and extend the usefulness of the bolt to other types of doors.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The bolt mechanism described herein utilizes a rotary knob actuated slide bolt and incorporates rotation of the bolt, also actuated by the knob, for positive looking action. The socket in which the end of the bolt seats contains a fixed retaining pin, the bolt end being slotted to clear the pin in normal sliding action. At opposite sides of the clearance slot are notched lugs which lock on the retaining pin when the bolt is rotated.
In one form the knob is connected to the bolt by a crank arm and link, the rotation being accomplished by a cam during the final sliding motion of the bolt. The linkage travels over center at the fully locked position for added security. In another form the conventional rack and pinion type mechanism is modified to incorporate rotation by sliding the knob along a slot. The positive locking of the mechanism makes the bolt adaptable to double doors, sliding doors, windows and the like. v
The primary object of this invention, therefore, is to provide a new and improved rotary locking bolt.
Another object of this invention is to provide a new and improved slide bolt actuated by rotating a knob and having a rotary action in the closed position to lock on a retainer.
A further object of this invention is to provide a new and improved slide bolt in which the complete bolting and locking action is controlled by the single knob.
Other objects and many advantages of this invention will become more apparent upon a reading of the following detailed description and an examination of the drawings, wherein like reference numerals designate like parts throughout and in which BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a top plan view of one form of the bolt assembly, portions of a door structure being indicated in broken line.
FIG. 2 is a sectional view taken on line2-2 of FIG. I, the bolt being open.
FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 2, but with the bolt closed and locked.
FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4--4 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 6 is a view from the left hand end of FIG. 2. FIG. 7 is a view from the left hand end of FIG. 3. FIG. 8 is a top plan view of an alternative form of the bolt assembly.
FIG. 9 is a sectional view taken on line 9-9 of FIG. 8.
FIG. 10 is a view from the left hand end of FIG. 9.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT In the form illustrated in FIGS. 1-7, the bolt assembly comprises a bolt unit 10 recessed in a door 12 and a socket unit 14 in the door jamb 16. It should be under stood that the door jamb is used for purposes of description only, since the socket unit could be in another door, either sliding or hinged.
Diametrically mounted in barrel 18 is a sleeve 36 having a square or otherwise non'circular bore 38. The actuating knob 40 is secured on a shaft 42 which matches the cross section of and is slidable through bore 38, to facilitate installation and removal of the bolt. In FIG. 1, the shaft is shown extending through the door and could be fitted with an external knob, not
shown, of the locking type. For internal operation only the shaft would terminate in the barrel 18. Fixed to sleeve 36 are radially extending arms 44 and pivotally attached to the arms is a link 46, held between the arms by a hinge pin 48. The other end of link 46 is pivotally connected to cap 32 by a hinge pin 50. Barrel 18 has an elongated opening 52 to provide clearance for the arm and link motion.
Fixed through bolt 22 is a cam follower pin 54, the ends of which ride in opposed cam slots 56 in barrel 18. The major portions of the cam slots are longitudinally straight, to guide the bolt axially with the end slot 24 held in alignment. Adjacent the end plate 20 the cam slots 56 have helical portions 58, which cause the bolt to be rotated as it moves axially, the rotation indicated being about 60 as an example.
In the retracted position of the bolt, as in FIGS. 1 and 2, the arms 44 are pulled back so that link 46 rests on sleeve 36 and acts as a stop. When knob 40 is rotated counterclockwise, link 46 pushes. the bolt 22 axially until the end enters socket element 60. If the rotation of the knob is stopped when a slight resistance is felt, the bolt will merely hold the door in the manner of a conventional slide bolt. Continued rotation of the knob, however, will cause follower pin 54 to ride in the helical portions 58 of the cam slots and rotate the bolt. Retainer pin 64 will thus be engaged in notches 26 and lugs 28 will lock the bolt against axial displacement. In the locked position the arm and link connection will swing over center beyond a line joining the centers of hinge pin 50 and shaft 42, until arms 44 rest on the bottom of barrel 18 as in FIG. 3, providing a secure locking action against forced movement of the bolt. It is this positive locking which makes the bolt assembly suitable for sliding or double folding doors.
The alternative form of the bolt assembly illustrated in FIGS. 8-10 comprises a bolt unit 70 mounted in door 72 and a socket unit 74 in jamb 76. The bolt unit has a cylindrical barrel 78 mounted on an end plate 80, which is seated in the edge of the door. Bolt 82, slidably mounted in barrel 78, has a diametrical slot 84 in one end, the slot extending into rotatably offset notches 86 leaving opposed lugs 88 at the ends of the slot. The other end of bolt 82 has an integral, longitudinally extending toothed rack 90, which is engaged by a pinion toothed shaft 92 extending substantially diametrically through barrel 78. Rotation of a knob 94 fixed on extended shaft 92 moves the bolt axially.
Having described my invention, I now claim: l. A rotary locking bolt, comprising:
a bolt unit having means for mounting in a movable door; a socket unit having means for mounting in a door structure against which the movable door closes; said bolt unit having a cylindrical barrel with a bolt slidably retained therein;
