Abstract
612,114. Spring catches; latches; locks. CADDICK, W., NEALE, A., and DIBBO, T. M. Oct. 9, 1945, No. 26238. [Class 44] A roller C, Fig. 3, is mounted between the prongs b of a bifurcated lock or latch bolt and is pressed forward by a sliding block E actuated by a spring F bearing against a stump a in the lock case, the roller passing through an aperture provided in the fore-end plate D between those for the prongs b so as to engage a depression in the striking plate of the door, thus forming a yielding catch when the bolt is withdrawn; the width of the aperture is such that the roller can only extend therethrough somewhat less than half its diameter. When the bolt is shot, the roller is locked in its outermost position by engagement of shoulders b<6> on the bolt with the block E. The roller has no pivot pin. In a modification, the bolt B is a latch bolt which may be retracted by a hand-follower or by a subsidiary key-operated bolt, and may be locked out by the subsidiary bolt; the prongs b are in this case chamfered. In a further modification, Fig. 7, the roller is replaced by a ball C<1>, the spring F<1> bearing directly against the ball and extending into a recess in the latch-bolt B<1>. As shown, the bolt B<1> is held retracted by the abutment j<2> on the keyoperated bolt j<1> bearing against an abutment b3 on the bolt Bl; when the bolt j<1> is in the neutral position, the bolt B<1> may be retracted by the usual handfollower. When the bolt j<1> is moved fully to the left, the abutment j 5 bearing against the abutment b<5> on the bolt Bl shoots the latter forward, and retains it in its locked-out position, the ball C<1> being locked out by the spring F<1> being fully compressed, or by the rear end of the slot in which it slides.
