[Class 44] In a night latch, the bolt of which is held retracted when pressed by hand past the normal retracted position as in the parent Specification the bolt is automatically locked in the shot position, on closing the door, to prevent withdrawal by pressure applied to its nose. A plate E, pivoted at E<4> to the bolt 3, assumes the position shown when the bolt has been retracted by the follower 14, and the knob or key released, the bolt being returned to its outward position by the spring 12, and the pin 15 of the follower engaged in the recess C<1> of the bolt and the recess E<1> of the plate E. During the closing of the door, the bolt nose 2 is pressed in by the striking plate, and the pin 15 disengaged from the recesses C<1> and E<1>, the spring 16 rotating the follower until the pin 15 rests on the inclined upper edge of the plate E, pressing it down immediately the bolt is fully shot, so that its lower end E3 engages the frame 9. When the knob or key is turned to withdraw the bolt, the pin 15 in passing over the nose E<6> of the plate E into the recesses E<1> and C<1> disengages the lower end E<3> of the plate E from the frame 9. The recesses E<1> and C<1> are so shaped that the pin 15 remains in them when the knob or key is released, thus holding the end E<3> of the plate E clear of the frame 9 until the bolt is again pressed in by the striking plate. A second pivot for the plate E may be provided on the bolt so that the mechanism may be reversed.
