Catches, spring.- In fastenings for sliding doors of the kind in which a pair of expanding pivoted catches on one part engage projections on the other and are secured by a plunger on the second part entering between the catches, a sliding rod is provided between the catches to enable the fastening to be released by handles fitted to each part. The spring-controlled catches n, pivoted to the casing d on one door, engage projections h on the casing e fitted on the second door and are engaged or disengaged by the rounded ends n<2> slipping under the parts h. A plunger j, urged by the spring j<2>, enters between the catches to secure them. On turning the handle f, the follower q<2> rocks the lever q to advance a slidable rod p and thrust back the plunger j, so that the catches n can collapse and allow the doors to be opened. If the handle f<1> is operated, the follower g<2> rocks the lever k and pulls back the plunger directly, allowing the doors to be opened. The plunger j may be locked against withdrawal from the catches n by the follower m of a spindle operated by a square key. In order that this spindle may not be turned to block the plunger until the catches are properly engaged, a sliding piece r' having a lug r is mounted to slide behind the plunger, its motion being limited by the slot t' and cross-pin t<2>. A pin t is secured to the crosspin t<2> and protrudes normally through a hole in the front of the plunger. When the catches are correctly engaged, the conical end p<5> of the rod p enters the hole in the front of the plunger j, pressing back the pin t and removing the lug r from the hole m<2> into which fits the square key. The plates h for engaging the catches may be made of hardened steel and are detachably fixed to the casing e by screws h<2>.
