Latches, sliding; staples. - A latch adapted more particularly for motor vehicle doors to avoid rattling comprises a stirrup-shaped staple and. a co-operating bolt in a case, the two end faces of the staple being adapted to engage the case whilst the side faces of the staple engage between the bolt and an abutment on the case. The staple consists of a stem 3 and two arms 4 carried by a plate 5 secured to the door jamb. The casing 2 mounted on the door contains the sliding bolt 1 which is first driven inwards against the pressure of the spring 6 when the door is closed and then shot forwards behind the stem 3. A bevel face 8 on the bolt 1 coacts with a bevel 9 on the staple to hold the latter without play against an abutment 7 on the casing. Vertical play is taken up by resilient lips 10 on the cut away part of the casing engaging the inclined end faces 12, Fig. 6, of the staple. The bolt spring 6 is arc shaped and has its ends looped and hooked round two pins 14, 14<1> on the carrier plate 15. The bolt is retracted by a handle fitted in a square hole 17 in a pivoted lever 19 connected with a parallel lever 21 by a bar 20 carrying a follower 18 engaged in a recess 23 in the bolt, the parts being held in the forward position by a spring 24 to prevent rattling of the handle. The latter may be locked to prevent actuation of the bolt by a sliding finger 26 adapted to be pushed under a flat 28 on the handle lever 19.
