Latches, sliding; striking plates for; preventing operation of.-A carriage door fastening comprises a spring pressed bolt held in the retracted position by a trip lever pivoted at right angles to the bolt and carried by a casing having a wedge or like shaped projection engaging a corresponding recess in the striking plate. A key-operated sliding bolt may be provided to lock the latch follower against operation. The bolt b has a blunt head b<1> and slides in a guide e under the action of the spring e. A trip lever h pivoted at j has a shoulder k which is urged to engage the shoulder m of the bolt to hold it withdrawn. When the door is closed, the projection q on the striking plate engages the end of the lever and trips it to allow the bolt to shoot into its socket r. The casing has a wedge- or like shaped projection n engaging a similarly shaped recess s in the striking plate to hold the door against rattling. A sliding bolt t governed by tumblers u and operated by the key y may be provided to engage the arm x of the latch follower to prevent unauthorized opening of the door. The spring l is strong enough to give the door an initial opening movement when the bolt is withdrawn.
