Door chains and the like; latches, sliding; night latches and like spring locks.-An arm 3 carried by the door slidably engages with a slot 6 in the top plate of the lock casing 5 to limit the opening movement of the door and hold it in the slightly open position, and a bar 10 which projects into the open end of the slot is arranged to be depressed so that the door may be fully opened when desired by pressing the levers 30, 37 one towards the other; or the bar may be lowered by a key operated either from the inside or the outside of the door. By raising the lever 37 about the pivot 33, the projection 35 engages a lug 28 on the tumbler 26 to permit the slidable member 18 to be moved to the left by the depression of the lever 30. The member 18 has an inclined front end 19 engaging with a roller 12 on the bar 10, which is thereby lowered. This movement of the bar 10 retracts the bolt 38 against a spring 40 by the engagement of an incline 13 with a roller 43. The door can then be fully opened, the end 7 of the arm 3 being free to leave the slot 6. To hold the door ajar, the bolt is first pulled back by hand, and released when in a position to engage the other side of the free edge of the door. The movement of the door brings the end 7 of the arm 3 into the left hand side of the slot 6. The bar may also be lowered into the release position by a key inserted through a keyhole 25 to act on the slidable member 18, or by a key inserted in the lower end of the casing 16 so as to engage with the spindle 14, with which it engages by a bayonet-slot connection.
