Abstract

11,004. Skinner, R. L. May 3, 1913, [Convention date]. Latches, sliding.-The inner end of a latch 4 operated by a push-and-pull spindle 13 has an angularly-disposed portion 7 guided between two fixed pins 8, so that, as the latch is withdrawn, it is tilted to relieve the friction of the nose 5 on the striking-plate. Latches, preventing operation of.-To secure the latch against operation, a spring-controlled lever 17 pivoted on the bolt at 18 is provided, and is adapted to engage a notch 20 in the push-and-pull spindle 13 to secure both the bolt and the spindle. The notch 20 in the spindle is normally occupied by a block 26 carried on a rod 21 running through the spindle 13 and operable by a knob on the inside and by a key on the outside of the door. When the door is open, the rod 21 can be turned to remove the block 26 from the notch 20, the catch 17 being prevented from immediately engaging the notch by means of a projection 27 on the block. When the door is slammed and the bolt pressed inwards and tilted, the catch 17 slips from the projection 27 and engages the notch 20, whereupon the bolt shoots out under the action of ts spring.
