A spring v44 controls. the latch 36 and normally retains the plunger 39 in its advanced position. -This spring is most conveniently coiled aboutthe stud 33, which serves as a stop for the spring 31fand`reacts between the pivot vpost 32 andthe rear end of the plunger 39. y The roll-back 23 reacts upon the bolt 25 vthrough a lever 45, which is pivotally mounted upon the-plate 12, at 46, and bears upon'the stud 35 in opposition to the lever 34. A spring 47 bears upon the foot of the lever 45 to normally-retain the roll-back 23 and spindle 20 in a position corresponding to an upright position, of the knobs 21, 22. As shown,l this spring is coiled about a stud 48 formed on the plate 12 'and reacts upon a fixed support, as a shoulder 49, formed on the inner face of the plate 12.
A stop lug'50 is provided forlimiting the movement of the bolt 25. As s hown,this stop lug projects int'o the path of ythe bolt 25 lfrom the innerface of the'plate 12in such a position that it is vengaged by the hooked end 26 of the bolt 25. when the Bolt is in `-the retracted-position, and enters a notch 51, formed in the undersideof the bolt in front ofthe slot 27, when the bolt is advanced. The initialv pressure of the lever v45 upon the stud 35 for retracting the bolt is resisted by the stud 50, and the latter then acts as a fulcrum upon which the bolt tends to tilt: As the rearward end of the'bolt is prevented from 'downward movement by the spindle 20, the rocking action is commu' nicated to the Yforward end, raising it over t-he stud 50. "Further pressure, by means' of the lever .45, retracts the -bolt'tothe position shown in Fig. 2. Should the door-have been drawn back from the jainb when the retracting action iscommenced, so that the hook 26 of the bolt rests firmly against the shoulder of the striker plate aperture, the bolt being slightly out of contact with the stud 50, this striker plate shoulder will serve'asthe fulcrum and ,cause-the bolt to rise until it 'is freed therefrom. Should the bolt be accidentally projected while the door is open, the stud r50 will have the 4effect of causing the automatic engagement of the bolt with the striker plate shoulder by preventing the bolt from being pushed inwardly by pressure uponitsLouter end. A This action is rendered possible by the rounding or beveling of the nose of the bolt, as shown. l By ineans of this arrangement the stud 50 receives a considerable part of the strain applied to the bolt 25 by an attempt to open the door without releasing the'bolt from theV jamb plate 17. In Vthe construction shown and described, thebolt 25 is raised from engagement with vthe jamb plate 17, by pressure applied to either of the knobs 2,1, 22, for opening the' door. When the bolt has been completely withdrawn, the stud 35 is engaged by the latch 36, and the bolt is thus retained in a retracted position in which it is Vcompletelyv concealed within the casing formed by the plates 12, 13, and the flange 30, until the latch 36 is released by contact ofthe forward end of the plunger 39 with the stud 43 formed on the jamb plate 17.
If'desired, key-controlled means may be employed for preventing rotation of the spindle-20 to release the bolt 25.
As shown, thel rollback 23 is provided with a rearwardly projecting arm 52, and a stop 53 is slidingly4 mounted on the plate 12,
to be moved into and out of the path of the arm 52 in the usual Way by a'key (not shown), adapted to be entered from either side of the door through key openings 56 in the plates 12, 13 and 54.
The various parts of the lock are most conveniently Amaintained in operative relation upon the plate 12, and the studs 32, 33 and 48, by means of anintermediate cover plate 54, applied to the ends of the studs 32, 33 and 48 by screws, as 55.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a lock 4for sliding like, in combination, a casing, arjamb plate having a shoulder, aV stud projecting from the, face of the jamb plate,an oscillatable and reciprocable bolt having a hooked end carried by the casing and movable between positions in which it is concealed within the casing and in which its hooked Yend projects from the casing to engage the shoulder of the jamb plate, respectively, a projecting spring acting on the bolt, a latch for securdoors andv the ing the bolt in the retracted position, a trip engageable with the stud on the jamb plate for releasing the latch, means for oscillating and retracting the bolt, and key-controlled neans for preventing the oscillation ofthe olt.
