A latch for a door or closure member comprises in combination, a striker 14 supported on either one of the door and a fixed frame or other member (e.g. a second door) for movement transversely of the direction of opening and closing of the door, a catch 20 pivotally supported on the other one of the door and frame or other member and engageable in door holding relation with the striker, the catch 20 being movable about its pivot, by a door-opening force between it and the striker, transversely of the opening and closing direction out of engagement with the striker, and manually (e.g. directly or by a key) releasable means for holding the catch in the striker engaging position, whereby door-holding engagement of the catch and striker may be obtained by movement of the striker on closing of the door and release of the engagement may be obtained by release of the catch holding means. As shown, the catch and its holding means are secured to a fixed frame member 10, the striker being on a door 11. The striker comprises a spring-loaded latch bolt which on closing movement of the door 11 engages behind the catch 20 which is pivoted on a pivot 22 offset by a distance a from the line of action of the opening force between the striker and the catch. A stop pin 25 on the catch 20 engages behind a spring-loaded stop 24 provided by one end face of one part 26 of a two part lever which is pivoted about an axis 27. A push button 32 is engageable with the other part 30 of the lever to rock the lever to move the stop clear of the pin 25 and permit the door to open under an opening force applied by the door.
