Abstract
744,696. Latch fastenings. HOUDAILLEHERSHEY CORPORATION. July 29, 1953 [Jan. 13, 1953], No. 21022/53. Class 44. A door latch, particularly for a refrigerator door 12, Fig. 1, includes a rotary latch bolt 13 adapted to co-operate with a keeper 11, a pivotally and bodily movable dog 47 having slidable engagement with the latch bolt 13 on the opposite side of its pivot 15 from the keeper, and biasing the latch bolt to rotate in a keeper-engaging direction, and a release lever 22 for retracting the dog 47 to release the bolt 13 for door opening movement. The release lever 22 is pivotally mounted on a pivot pin 23 extending between two latch plates 19, and is biased in a counterclockwise direction by a spring 33. The lever 22 is connected to the dog 47 by a pin 48 which is slidable along slots 49 in the plates 19. A slotted portion 50 of the dog 47 engages a fixed guide pin 51 mounted between the plates 19. On rotating a handle 27 about its pivot 31 an extension 30 of the handle rotates the release lever 22 from the full line to the broken line position thereby withdrawing the dog 47 from the dotted line to the broken line position. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the handle 83 may be mounted to swing about any one of three different axes (see Fig. 6, not shown). Thus a plate 86 secured to the door has three angularly disposed pairs of parallel lugs 91, 92, 93 drilled to receive a pivot pin 95 for the handle. In its released position a spring 85 holds a recessed position 82 of the handle against a cylindrical wall 88 of the plate 86. The handle is adjustably connected by means of a link 79 to a release lever 73 pivoted at 74. One end of the link 79 carries lock nuts 84 and the other end passes through an ear 77 on the lever 73 and is connected to a member 80 which abuts against the ear 77. The release lever 73 is pivotally connected to a dog 65 by a pin 66 which is free to slide in slots 67 in two parallel spaced latch plates (as 62). A fixed pin 70 engages a slot 69 in the dog 65 and a spring 71 acting on the release lever biases the dog into engagement with a rotary latch bolt 60 pivoted at 63.
