Abstract
727,588. Stays. GRAND, S. E. April, 29, 1953 [May 6, 1952; Oct. 6, 1952; Oct. 13, 1952], Nos. 11391/52, 24957/52 and 25568/52. Class 65(1). A device for limiting the opening of a door or window and for bolting it in the closed position comprises an arm pivoted to the frame, a bolt attached to the door and displaceable, when the door is closed, into coupling relationship with the arm, and latch means on the frame to hold the arm against movement. In the form shown, the arm 3 is pivoted at 4 to lugs 5 on the frame, and its lower end rests between lugs 8 to be engaged by a latch 12 pivoted at 13 ; a bolt 1 horizontally slidable on the door has a reduced neck behind its free end, and the bar 3 has an opening 15 through which the end of the bolt can pass and a slot 14 along which the neck of the bolt can move without being disengageable therefrom. From the position shown the bolt can be retracted to allow the door to be opened without restraint, or the latch 12 can be disengaged from the stay-bar 3 to allow the bar to swing upwards about its pivot 4 as the door opens, the neck of the bolt 1 sliding along the slot 14 and limiting the opening of the door by engaging the end of the slot. In a modification, a telescopic stay is used, the extension of the stay being limited by pin-and-slot engagement between the stay members : in this form the end of the bolt is non-circular and the stay has a corresponding aperture in its lower end, the stay swinging on the neck of the bolt during opening of the door when restraint is required. The stop pin may be fixable in several alternative positions to enable the limited open position of the door to be varied. In a further modification a jointedfolding stay is used, the stay-bar 3 having pivoted at its lower end a second bar which in the closed position of the door is held vertical, for example by a spring at the pivot between the two bars or a spring catch engaging its upper end, and which has a non-circular hole at its upper end to receive the non-circular end of the bolt ; this form of stay may be inverted. Instead of a bolt with a neck, a bolt with a cross-pin in the end, or a flat bolt with a T-head may be used, the aperture in the stay-bar being formed accordingly.
