Classes 44 and 65(1) A fastening device for a door or the like comprises an arm 1 pivoted at one end to a member 3 adapted to be mounted on the jamb post 4 of the door or the like and a sliding bolt 6 carried by a housing 5 adapted to be mounted on the door or the like, the bolt being so formed at its free end as to be slidably engaged with the arm in such a manner that as the door or the like is opened the arm is caused to pivot relatively to the jamb post, an abutment at the end of the arm limiting the sliding movement and hence the opening movement of the door, the bolt being disengageable from the arm when the door or the like is shut, and means to interconnect a lock 12 mounted on the door or the like with the bolt in such manner that operation of the lock causes withdrawal of the bolt. The bolt is loaded into engagement with the arm by a spring 7 and is disengaged by a knob 8. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 the arm 1 is pivoted about a horizontal axis and the weight of the arm normally maintains it in the vertical position shown. The head 10 of the bolt 6 is normally engaged in a groove 2 in the arm and when the door or the - like is opened the arm pivots relative to the member 3 and the head of the bolt slides down the groove until it reaches its end which forms the abutment, thus preventing the door or the like being opened any further; the head 10 of the bolt can be withdrawn from the groove in any position of the arm. The head 10 of the bolt is rounded and the outer side of the arm 1 is provided with a cam surface 11 adjacent its pivoted end so that after the bolt has been disengaged from the groove it can snap back into the groove on closing the door or the like. The lock 12 has a tongue 13 of a cylinder connected to a lever 14 which is connected by a link 16 to a triangular cam member 18 pivoted to the housing 5 and which bears against a projection on the rear side of the knob 8: when the cylinder of the lock 12 is turned by its key, the movement of the lever 14 causes the cam 18 to withdraw the bolt 6. In a modification the arm 1 is pivoted about a vertical axis and the groove is undercut so that the bolt head can only be withdrawn from the groove adjacent its pivoted end. In this modification a hole is provided in the arm adjacent its free end and a screw or pin inserted through this hole holds the bolt at the end of the arm so that the door or the like is held slightly ajar.
