1451078 Door fastenings EATON CORP 28 Sept 1973 [29 Sept 1972] 45498/73 Heading E2A A device for operating vertical latches at the top and bottom of a door, and a lateral latch at either edge of the door includes as shown, a cross-bar 40 mounted on pivoted arms 44, 46, the arm 44 engaging a channelshaped member 52 which is slidable in a base 54 fixed to the door and connected to latch assemblies 18, 26 by rods 62, 70 respectively and to a lateral latch assembly 32 by parallel pins 74, 76. Depression of the cross-bar simultaneously operates all the latch assemblies, the member 52 being moved upwardly by a nose position 80 on the arm 44 co-operating with a pin 84 on the member to release the latch bolts 20, 28, and cam surfaces 92 cooperating with the pin 74 to pivot the spring- biassed latch bolt 34 to a release position. Upon release of the cross-bar, the arm 44 is pivoted by a return spring 102 to release the slide member 52 for downward movement under the influence of gravity or springs resulting in return of the latches to the latched position thereof. The member 52 is provided with further cam surfaces 104 for co-operation with the pin 76 whereby reversal of the member and base 54 allows the use of the device with either right or left-hand doors. To maintain the latch assemblies in the disengaged condition so that the door 14 can be swung open, there is provided a dogging device 140 to hold the arm 44 actuated against the influence of the spring 102; the device consists of a dog 144 pivoted on a shaft 146 provided with a socket 148 into which a wrench is inserted to rotate the dog to an active position, Fig. 5, when the member 52 is held in an upward position. An actuator assembly 152, Fig. 2, provided to operate the latch assemblies to the disengaged condition from outside the door, consists of a pivoted thumbpiece 154 which moves downwardly a slide 158 to pivot a lever 162 the end portion 180 of which raises the slide member 52; a cylinder lock 190, when operated, swings a lever 194 to engage the lever 162 to hold the latter against rotation and thereby prevent undesired actuation of the assembly 152. In modifications, (a) the device is associated with latches concealed within the door, (b) the lateral fastening is a mortise lock, and (c) a locking dog Fig. 8 (not shown) holds the slide member 52 against vertical movement and is automatically released upon depression of the arm 44.
