A fastening for a sliding door comprises a hook 7 pivoted at 15 to be operated by a peg 19 associated with the handle 17 and a detent 6 pivoted at 20 and biased by the spring 8 when the door is opened to retain the hook in the inoperative position. When the door is closed the pin 25 engages the face 27 of the keeper so that the detent pivots to release the hook which is then biased to its operative position by the spring 8. The handle is centred by the spring 28 and a barrel-type lock may be incorporated in the spindle 16 of the handle.
