Class 44 A door fastening comprises the combination of a spring-loaded bolt, a press-button for effecting withdrawal of the bolt and a spring-loaded catch piece for retaining the bolt in the withdrawn position, the catch piece being disposed to contact and be actuated by a fixed part as the door is closed to effect an automatic release of the bolt and serving also by the reaction of its spring loading on the fixed part to impart an initial opening movement to the door when the bolt is withdrawn. In the arrangement according to Fig. 1, a spring loaded latch bolt 11, which may be formed of nylon, is slidable within a housing at the rear of a door 7 to a retracted position by means of a spring-loaded press-button 14 protruding from a hollow handle 8 on the door. The housing is formed by an apertured spring steel sheet 9 secured to a sheet metal piece 10, the sheet 9 being formed with resilient tongues which grip a boss 8a on the rear side of the handle 8. Oppositely directed projections 14a on the inner end of the press button 14 co-operate with shoulders 11a in a recess in the bolt to withdraw the bolt. Preferably the press-button incorporates a barrel lock which upon insertion therein of a key, permits the press button to be rotated through 90 degrees so that one of the projections 14a will then abut the bolt 11 to prevent movement of the press button. A spring-loaded catch piece 17, which may be of nylon, co-operates with a step 11b on bolt 11 to retain the bolt in the retracted position and also to assist the opening movement of the door, the catch piece automatically freeing the bolt when the door is reclosed. In a modification. Fig. 4, in which a hollow handle 20 and a housing 23, 24 are secured to the door by screws 22, the push button includes a portion 25a which co-operates with a roller or other abutment on the bolt 27. The push button and the bolt are loaded by a common spring 28. The bolt is retained in the retracted position by a spring loaded catch piece 31 in a manner similar to that of the first embodiment.
