Application January 6 1` Claim.
The invention relates to a lock and more especially to hasp locks for trunks, suitcases or the like. Y
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character, wherein a bearing ball or roller is located at the top of the hasp lug slot so that the lug will release quickly when freed by a locking bolt controllable by a key or a release knob so that there is little likelihood or chance of the hasp lug becoming stuck within the slot accommodating the same.
Anotherobject of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character, wherein the construction thereof is novel and assures the easy locking and unlocking operation in the use of the lock.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character, which is simple in its make-up, reliable and effective in operation, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view, the inventon consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation showing the lock constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical transverse sectional view through the lock.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a portion of a trunk, suitcase or the like to which the lock constituting the present invention is applied. This lock comprises a housing body I0 carried on an attaching front plate II which is secured in place to the trunk, suitcase or the like A in any desirable manner.
Within the housing Ill is a latching slide bolt, I2 for engaging in a hasp lug I3 of a swinging hasp I4, the hasp lug being insertable through a slot I5 provided in said plate I I and when the 1937, Serial No. 119,344
bolt is engaged in the lug the trunk, suitcase or the like will be locked.
The hasp it is hinged at I@ to an attaching plate il as is usual.
The bolt if is controllable by a key (not shown) when inserted in akey hole slot i3 in the plate il or by a push knob or button E9, the bolt being preferably urged into locking position with the lug i3 on the hasp llt and is released by the key or by the knob or button i9, the latter being manually moved.
Secured to the inner face of the plate II is a suitable retaining plate 2li which with the said plate il at the upper end of the slot I 5 has outstruck therefrom bulges 2l companions to each other for the seating therein of a bear- -ing ball or roller 22 which is loosely anchored between the plates II and 2i] and slightly extends into the slot I5 for the lug i3. This lug I3 at its top edge is formed with a beveled flat face contact 23 for the engagement of the ball or roller 22 therewith so as to assure the quick insertion and release of the said lug i3 in and from the slot I5. The hasp iii next to the contact 23 is formed with a socket 2li for accommodating the outward bulge 2l of the plate II when the said hasp lil is closed against the said plate il. This closed position of the hasp Ill brings the lug i3 within the slot i5 with the contact 23 engaged at its high portion with the ball or roller 22 loosely seated between the plates II and 2G. Thus when the bolt l2 is released from the lug I3, this Contact 23 cam acts for the quick release of the lug I3 from the slot I5 assuring 'the easy opening of the lock.
What is claimed is:
The combination of a` lock having a swinging hasp provided with a lug received by said lock, a cover plate fitted over said lock to be interposed between it and the hasp and having a lugreceiving opening for the reception of the lug on said hasp, a retaining plate carried by the said cover plate and above the opening in the latter, the said cover and retaining plates being reversely bulged to provide a socket above said opening in the cover plate, and a ball loosely held in said socket for contact with the lug on the hasp and adapted to ride upon said lug, the contacting area of the lug with the ball being beveled for disposition at an outward inclination away from the hasp and having a channeled runway for the said ball.
