citizen of the United St'ates, and resident of Milwaukee, Milwaukee County,- Wisconsin, have invented newand useful Ini provements in Locks, ofwhich the/following is a description, reference being had to the ,facc'ompanyi g drawings, which are a part of this specification.
' This invention relates to locks of the type used for locking tool boxes of automobiles wherein Y a knob-controlled latch may be locked by a removable key to prevent unauthorized access to the tool box. Theinvention, however, is capable of various uses and is not to-be limited to any particular, purpose. An object of the invention is to simplify the construction and make it mex ensive to 29 manufacture though durable an and with a wide range of key changes. p 7
With the above and other objects-in view the invention consists in the lock-as herein claimed and all equivalents.

fits within an opening of the cover plate. The outwardly'turned-flange of the knob 21 is'confinedbetwecn the coverplate and the attaching flange 22 of a cylindrical lock sleeve 23. The cylindrical lock sleeve projects within the knob 21 while the attachmg flange 22 is'connected by rivets 24 to the cover plate. The-flange of theknob' 21 is not entirely. enclosed byflthe attaching} flange 22. and at its exposed portion it is provided with a projecting finger 25. which engages a recess 26 in the lock bolt to cause the withddrawal of the lock bolt against the pressure of its. spring when the knob is turned.
A lock cylinder 27 fits within the lock sleeve'23 with its shoulder 27' against an inturned flange aihthe end of the sleeve and its outer end rejects through the end of the knob 21 whi 0 its inner end bears against the flat surface of the. lock bolt 14. A number of tumbler slides 28 fit within the lock barrel transversely thereof and are aligned flush with the surface of the lock barrel by i the serrated edg'es ofa ke'ly 29 when it is wayi.30.'. When the key is withdrawn, however, these tumbler slides 28 are projected extending key into opposite'openings 31 of the'lock sleeve being turned. The key not only withdraws the tumbler slides but'it serves as a handle by means of which the lock barrel may be in-the' pathof the lock bolt 14-80 as tolpre vent its withdrawal, but in the otheri position, as shown by dotted lines in sand figure, it is removed from the. path of the turned and so cause an eccentrically posi- 1o: lock bolt and the" latter is free to be withaction of the drawn either by the cam action of its beveled projscting end on engaging the strike plate, or tumbler slides 28 may project within the slots 31 of the lock sleeve in either of these two positions, it is obvious that the key may be withdrawn either when the bolt is locked or when it is unlocked.

In operation the lock bolt may act as a latch to yield against the pressure oi its spring when the lock barrel is in positlon to place the pin 32, as shown by dotted lines in Fi 3. This yielding movement of the lock it ma J be occasioned bythe cam veled end thereof on closing the door to which the lock'is attached or it may be caused by the turnin of the knob 21 so that the finger 25 thereof ears against the shoulder or notch 26. When, however, the lock barrel is locked in its other position with the pin 32in the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the lock bolt cannot be withdrawn by either means. Thetnmbler slides by projecting in the openings 31 serve to lock the lock barrel in either of 'these two positions and. re'uire the presence of the key in order to withdraw them to a position in which the lock barrel may be moved. The key also serves as a handle for moving the lock barrel'when it is unlocked.
The lock construction is composed of few parts inexpensive to manufacture and easy I to assemble and is not likely to wear or get out of order. It 1' uires no friction means for holding the loc barrel in position to receive the ke for the lock barrel is locked in that position whenever-the key is removed. The lock mechanlism being contained within'the knob relieves the lock caseofismall parts and permits of the use ofa coil spring and heavy bolt construction.
What I claim as new and desire to secure I by Letters Patent is:
1. In a look, a lock mounted knob for moving the lock bolt, and a key-controlled lock barrel within-the knob having a projection on its end eccentric the turning of the knob. As thebolt, a
, from the lock barrel-- bolt, a rotatabily -thereto forv blocking the movements of the lock bolt.
2. In a look, a lock bolt, a rotatable knob for moving the lock bolt, a stationary lock sleeve within the knob, a key-controlled lock barrel rotatably mounted within the lock sleeve and engageable therewith, and an eccentric projection on the lock barrel for blocking the lock bolt in a locking position of the lock barrel.
3. In a lock, a lock case, a knob rotatably mounted therein, a lock barrel contained within the knob and adapted to receive a key, tumblers within the lock barrel positioned by the key, barrel and knob engaged by the tumblers when the key is removed, a lock bolt in the lock 'ca'se engaged and moved by the knob, and a projection on the lock barrel standing in the path of the lock bolt in a position of the lock barrel in which the key may be. removed.
4.-In a lock, a lock case, a cover plate fited thereto, a sliding lock bolt within the lock case, a knob cover plate and provided with a finger engaging the lock bolt for moving it, a lock sleeve within the'knob secured to the cover plate and provided with openings, a lock barrel rotatably mounted in the lock sleeve and the knob, key controlled tumbler slides in the lock barrel adapted to engage the openings of thelock sleeve, and a projection on the lock barrel adapted to block the lock bolt in a locking position of the lock barrel.
5. In a lock, a lock case, a cover plate therefor, a knob rotatably mounted in the cover plate, cover plate and having a cylindrical portion within the knob provided with openings, a lock barrel rotatably mounted in the lock sleeve and the knob, key-controlled tumbler a lock sleeve between the rotatably mounted in thea lock sleeve riveted to the,
