Abstract

1,116,496. Latches. WILMOT-BREEDEN Ltd. 15 Dec., 1966 [16 Dec., 1965], No. 53536/6. Heading E2A. A door latch comprises a pivotally mounted latch member 4 with a hook-like portion which projects from the edge of the door when the latch is fitted for latching engagement with a keeper 8, the latch member pivot 9 being movable from a latching position to an unlatching position in which the latch member does not project from the door edge, a spring 15 which urges the pivot towards the unlatching position, and an actuating lever for connection to a door handle which acts to urge the pivot to the latching position, the latch member acting in this way when a closing movement is imparted to the door through the door handle. To open the door, the handle is turned so that a peg 22 on the lever engages arm 25 of the latch member 4 thereby pivoting the latch member to disengage the keeper 8, which latch member is then withdrawn bodily into the door by the spring 15 acting between the latch member 4 and a latch member 5 mounted on a fixed pivot 14 and which holds the door in the open position. The latch member 5 is released by the handle pivoting the actuating lever so that a second peg 23 engages arm 26 of the latch member 5 to pivot it to releasing position. The latch members are mounted between parallel plates, the pegs 22, 23 pass through slots in one plate and the pivot 9 moves in slots in both plates. The actuating lever has an inside and outside door handle. A locking member 33 mounted on the handle shaft has an inwardly projecting snib 34 which can be turned to locking position in which locking face 31 blocks movement of the arm 25. A key operated lock cylinder within the handle shaft enables locking and unlocking from outside the door. The lock cylinder and shaft have cut outs into which a pin 38 in the locking member engages this allows the locking member to be moved to locking and unlocking position from ins de the door independently of the lock cylinder or handle
