Abstract

1,111,513. Latches. WILMOT-BREEDEN Ltd. 29 Dec., 1966 [4 Jan., 1966], No. 282/66. Heading E2A. A door latch comprises a rotary latch bolt 2 or 3 mounted for angular movement between unlatched and latching positions and having a projecting end with at least one latching projection 17 for latching engagement with a keeper 18, the bolt advancing in the direction of the rotational axis of the bolt relatively to the keeper during a latching operation and being surrounded by an axially displaceable shroud member 20 which is spring- loaded towards a position in which it shrouds the projecting end of the belt and is formed for engagement with the latching projection 17 to retain the bolt in the unlatched position. As shown, the latch comprises a pair of latch bolts 2, 3 and is arranged to hold a sliding door in an open or closed position. Each bolt includes an actuating arm 4 or 5, the arms being urged into engagement with ears 13 and 14 of a release member 6 by a spring 16. The release member 6 is operable by handles 9 or 10 on a shaft (not shown) extending through the member, the handles being centred by a spring 15. The keeper 18 for each bolt consists of a plate having a non-circular aperture (19) for passage of the bolt projection 17. A locking disc 26 rotatably mounted adjacent a flange 12 of the member 6 is formed with an arcuate cut-out 27 which cooperates with a cut-out in the flange 12 to permit or block movement of the member 6. The disc is lockable at the other side of the door by a key-operated lock. The arrangement is such that when an opening or closing force is applied to the door by either handle, the memlber 6 turns the appropriate bolt to allow its release from its keeper, the return of the handle to its normal position by the spring 16 allowing the bolt to turn and its projection 17 to engage behind the opening in the shroud 20. In another arrangement, Fig. 8 (not shown), the latch is fitted between inner and outer panels of a door and in Fig. 9 (not shown), the bolts are off-set.
