Abstract
605,883. Locking vehicle wheels. NEWTON, LANSDOWNE, & CO., Ltd., and KELLY, E. O. J. Aug. 20, 1945, No. 21229. [Class 79 (iii)] [Also in Group XXV] A lock for bicycles, having a sliding bolt locking a wheel, comprises a two-part casing, one part 1b, Fig. 1, of which is secured to the frame by a clip 37 with means, e.g. screws 38, manipulable only from within the part, a locking bolt 2 sliding through the casing, a removable plunger 4 passing through both parts of the casing to hold the parts together, a finger member 31, Fig. 2, within the casing for locking the bolt in shot position and at the same time engaging the finger 4 to prevent its removal, and locking mechanism within the casing operable by a key 3 to withdraw the finger from engagement with the bolt and the plunger to permit movement of the bolt to withdrawn position and removal of the plunger when desired to separate the parts of the casing. The locking mechanism, contained in the part 1 of the casing, consists of a set of two-part spring-loaded pin tumblers 5, Fig. 5, sliding in channels in plates 8, 9. The plate 8 lies in the bottom of the casing 1, while the L-shaped plate 9 lies above it, the channels for the tumblers being formed by upstanding flanges 12, 13. A spring 17 normally holds the plate 9 in the locked position, but when the key is inserted the tumblers are set to release the plate 9 as the end of the key abuts against a lug 20 on the plate which can then be moved against the spring action by further movement of the key. Above the locking mechanism are two co-planar plates 23, 24, Figs. 2 and 6, the latter being slidable to the extent of the clearance between a projecting part 23a on plate 23 and a cut-away part 24a in the plate 24. The plate 24 is moved by an upstanding lug 19 on the plate 9. Pivoted to the plate 23 at 28 is a lever plate 30, and an upstanding lug 26 on the plate 24 engages in a recess 32 in the pivoted plate 30. Movement of the plate 9 by the key thus rocks the plate 30, and an upstanding finger 31 thereon is withdrawn from a recess in the bolt 2 located above the plate 30, allowing the bolt to be retracted by the action of a spring 29. The finger 31 is also at the same time withdrawn from a recess 4a, Fig. 9, in the plunger 4 which passes through aligned slots in the two parts of the casing, thus allowing the plunger to be removed to open the casing if required. The plunger 4 is also secured by a screw passing through the part 1a of the casing from outside into a hole 4b in the plunger.
