Abstract

In a luggage lock comprising a mechanism for releasably engaging a keeper member 75 and adapted to be locked thereto in the engaging position, a slide 18 is movable between engaged and released positions and is provided with a pivotally mounted catch 20 which is spring urged to a position in which it extends into the path, of movement of the keeper member 75 during movement of the latter to the engaging position, whereby the catch 20 is displaced during such movement, and after slide retraction from the engaging position, contacts the keeper member and acts as a stop to. prevent re-engagemenit, of the slide with the keeper member. As shown, the slide is releasable against a spring 28 by a knob 14 and is lockable in its engaged position by a key operated locking mechanism comprising a locking plate 16 seated in a recess 60 of the front plate of the lock. The plate includes a key-engaging lug 66 and a locking lug 67, the latter being clear of the slide in the unlocked position of the slide, but being moved into a recess 83 to abut an edge 84 of the slide when the key is turned to its locking position, spring arms 62 of a plate 24 then engaging recesses 70, 71 of the locking plate to maintain the latter in the locking position. In another arrangement, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) the slide projects through an end of the lock case for direct manual operation. According to Fig. 8 (not shown) a slidable catch piece (110) at one end of the lock case cooperates with the slide to lock the latter independently of the key lock. In a further arrangment Fig. 9 (not shown), in which the lock is made of sheet metal parts, the lock is disposed on the inner side of a suitcase wall, with an elongated operating knob on the outer side of the wall and through which the key is adapted to pass. In Fig. 11 (not shown) the recess in the slide for the keeper member includes a ramp to positively eject the keeper member.
