The present invention relates to latches, particularly for automobile doors, and has for an object to provide a latch in which the handle shaft is adapted to be secured in such relation to the latch that it cannot be removed by unauthorized persons, when the latch is locked, shouldsuch persons succeed in disengaging the escutcheon plate, which is ordinarily the only means for retaining the handle against longitudinal movement. A further object is to provide a construction in which the handle shaft may be inserted into relation with the latch during assembly of the automobile with facility, and without the necessity for employing special tools, keys, and the like. Another object is to provide a device of this character which may be attached to the bolt and handle shaft, without changing or affecting the other parts of the latch.
With the above and other objects in view, an embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, and this embodiment will be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto, and the invention will be finally pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawing, the exemplary latch embodying the present improvements comprises a base plate 10 provided with a flange 11 at its forward end having a latch bolt opening therein. The latch bolt 13 is slidably engaged at its nose end 14 in the Serial No. 389,128. 1
At the rearward end of the bolt thereis provided an upwardly projecting vertical-extension 17 engaged by the inside handle rollback 18, the hub 19 of which has bearing in apertures formed in the base and cover plates 10 and 15. A coil spring 20 normally engaged at one end with a lug 21 on the roll-back, and engaged at its other end against a lug 22 struck from the base plate yieldablyretains the roll-back in its normal position by engaging a projection 23 thereon with the lug 22.
The outside handle rollback 24 has its hub 25 rotatably engaged in apertures in the plates 10 and 15, and is adapted to actuate the bolt through engagement with an upwardly and forwardly projecting arm 26 formed on the bolt.
' The handle 27 is provided with the usual escutcheon plate 28 secured thereto, and a key operated lock 29, adapted in the locked position to engage with a locking dog 30 secured in the door to prevent rotation of the handle. A shaft 31, of square cross-section, is secured to the handle and is adapted to fit the square opening 32 of the roll-back. In
the usual type of lock it is possible in the.
locked relation to unscrew the escutcheon plate and then withdraw the handle, whereupon a planesquare shaft may be inserted in the roll-back and the latch operated to open the door. The present improvements are intended to prevent such unauthorized withdrawal of the handle shaft and opening of the door. Upon one side of the shaft 31 and in spaced relation to the end, a projecting pin or lug 33 is provided, and which is adapted in the assembled relation, as shownin Figs. 1 and 2, to be rotatably disposed beneath the projected upper end of a plate 34 secured to the bolt 13 by rivets 35. In the locked relation of the handle, withthebolt projected, the pin 33 is beneath the endof the plate 34, and withdrawal of the handle shaft is prevented. l As the locking of the roll-back and including an 5; back and including a lateral abutment spaced handle prevents relative rotary movement of the shaft, rotation of the shaft to turn the pin from beneath the plate is impossible, even though the escutcheon is unscrewed.
In order to assemble the handle it is only necessary to retract the bolt by means of the inside handle roll-back, or by pressing it in at the nose end, as shown in Fig. 5, or it may be retracted by engaging the end of the handle shaft in the outside handle roll-back, and then turning the roll-back to a point where the plate 2% is out of the path of the pin 33, whereupon the handle shaft is pressed into position so that the pin will be beneath the plate when the bolt is again projected. Upon insertion of the handle shaft the escutcheon and lock is secured in the usual manner tothe door front.
I have illustrated and described a preferred and satisfactory embodiment of the invention, but it will be obvious that changes may be made therein, within the spirit an scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a latch, a latch casing, a latch bolt, a roll-back carried by said casing for retracting said bolt, a removable handle shaft adapted to be longitudinally engaged with said abutment portion, abutment means carried by the latch bolt adapted to abut said abutment of the handle shaft upon longitudinal withdrawal movement in the normal non-bolt-retracting position of said roll-back, said abutment means adapted to permit longitudinal engaging movement of the end of said handle shaft with said roll-back and rotary movement of said handle shaft in any position of said rollback and in any position of rotation of said handle shaft.
2. In a latch, a latch casing, a latch bolt, a roll-back carried by said casing for retracting said bolt, a removable handle shaft adapted to be engaged with said roll back in any position of rotation of said handle shaft and roll-back, and cooperating means respectively carried by said handle shaft and latch bolt adapted in the projected position of said bolt to prevent longitudinal withdrawal movement of said handle shaft.
3. In a latch, a latch casing, a latch bolt, a roll-back for retracting said bolt, a handle shaft adapted to be engaged with said roll back and including a lateral abutment spaced from the end, and abutment means carried by said bolt adapted in the projected position of said bolt to abut said abutment of the shaft upon longitudinal withdrawal movement thereof.
4. In a latch, a latch casing, alatch bolt, a roll-back for retracting said bolt, a handle shaft adapted to be engaged with said rollfrom the end, and abutment means secured to and movable with said bolt adapted in the projected position of said bolt to abut said abutment of the shaft upon longitudinal withdrawal movement thereof.
5. In combination, a latch including a latch casing, a latch bolt, and a roll-back carried by said casing for retracting said bolt, a removable handle shaft adapted to be engaged with said roll-back in any position of rotation of said handle shaft and roll-back and to be turned to rotate said roll-back, locking means associated with said shaft adapted to be actuated to prevent rotation of said shaft, and means cooperating between said latch bolt and handle shaft adapted in the locked relation of said handle shaft to prevent longitudinal withdrawal movement thereof.
6. In combination, a latch including a latch casing, a latch bolt, and a roll-back for retracting said bolt, a handle shaft adapted to be engaged with said roll-back and to be turned to rotate said roll-back, locking means associated with said shaft adapted to be actuated to prevent rotation of said shaft, and means cooperating between said latch and handle shaft adapted in the locked relation of said handle shaft to prevent longitudinal withdrawal movement thereof, and adapted in the unlocked relation of said handle to permit of longitudinal insertion in the rollback in any position of said roll-back.
