Referring to the drawing, the exemplary latch embodying the present improvements comprises a base plate 10 provided with a flan 11 at its forward end having a latch bolt opening 12 therein. The latch bolt 13 is slidably engaged at its nose end 14 in the presses it to its projected position.

A coil spring 20 having one end en'- gaged with a lug 21 on the roll-back and its other end engaged with a lug 22 struck from the base plate yieldabl retains the roll-back in its normal position y engaging a projection 23 thereon with the lug 22.
The bolt is adapted to be actuated by the outside handle roll-back, presently to be more fully described, through engagement with an upwardly and forwardly projecting arm 24 formed on the bolt. l v
The outside handle roll-back is preferably formed of two parts 25 and 25* which may be sheet metal stampings, their upper ortions being secured together by a presse up projection 26 on one part engaged in a hole 27 in the other part and riveted over, as shown in Fig. 2. The parts may be secured together in any suitable manner, however, as by spot welding. The lower portions are spaced apart by forming shoulders, as at 28 and 29, and provide a space for the handle shaft retaining plate 30. Pressed up circular portions 31 and 32 are formed in the lower portions of the roll-back and rotatably engage openings 33 and 34 provided in the cover and base plates of the casing. A pressed up circular portion 35 is pressed up from the retaining plate 30 and is engaged in the recess formed at the inner side of the roll-back portion 25 to provide a centralizing bearing in the roll-back for the plate.
The roll-back portions are provided with aligned square openings 36 and 37, while the plate 30 is provided with a square opening 38, the walls of which are normally at an angle to the walls of the openings 36 and 37. The plate 30 projects into proximity to the flange 11 of the casing, and is provided with a rounded face 39 of such radius as to permit of a slight movement of the plate in either di '85 the roll-back the opening 38 will not register Ill with the openings 36 and 37 of the roll-back, but will only register upon rotation of the roll baek to a given'point in bolt retracting direction.
The handle 40 is provided with the usual escutcheon plate 41 rotatably secured thereto, and a key-operated lock 42 adapted in the locked position to engage a locking dog 43 secured in the door to prevent rotation of the handle. A. shaft 44, of square cross-section, is secured to the handle, and at a point spaced from its end is provided With a circular groove 45, which in the engaged relation of the shaft with the roll-back registers with the retaining plate 30. In the usual type of latch it is possible in the locked relation to unscrew the escutcheon plate and then withdraw the handle, whereupon a plane square shaft may be inserted into the roll-back and the latch operated to open the door. The present improvements are intended to prevent such unauthorized withdrawal of the handle shaft and opening the door.
In order, to assemble the handle shaft it is only necessary to engage the end of the shaft in the roll-back opening 36 and then turn the same to a point where this opening registers with the opening 38 of the retaining plate 30, whereupon the end of the shaft is pressed through the opening 38 and into the rearward roll-back opening 37, the 'circu-v lar groove 45 registering with the plate 30 in the fully inserted relation and permitting normal retracting movement of the roll-back. The escutcheon is secured in the usual manner to the door front.
As clearly indicated in Fig. 1, the walls of the opening 38 of the retaining plate lie in.
front of the corners of the squared inner end'of the shaft in the normal and locked relation of the roll back, effectually preventing withdrawal of the handle shaft.
I have illustrated and described a preferred and satisfactory embodiment of the invention, but it will be obvious that changes may be made therein, within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a latch, a latch casing, a latch bolt, a roll-back for retracting said bolt having a non-circular opening, a rotary handle shaft having an annular groove spaced from its end and non-circular aligned portions at each side of said groove, one of which constitutes an end ortion and the other an inner portion, and arotatably movable shaft retaining member having an abutment wall adapted in aeeaase a moved position of said roll-back and through the movement -of said roll-back to register with said opening of the roll-back, and in the normal non-bolt-retracting position of the roll-back to be out of register with said opening, abutment means on said casing adapted to abut said retaining member to hold it against movement during movement of said roll-back, said shaft having its inner non-circular portion engaged in said opening at one side ofsaid retaining member, its non-circular end portion disposed at the \other side of said retaining member, and its annular groove in alignment with said abutment wall, said abutment wall adapted to abut'said non-circular end portion upon longitudinal withdrawal movement in the norigialknon-bolt-retracting position of said rollac 2-: In a latch, a latch casing, a latch bolt, a roll-back for retracting said bolt having a non-circular opening, a- ,rotary handle shaft having an annular groove spaced from its end and non-circular aligned portions at each side of said groove, one of which constitutes an end portion and the other an inner por tion, and a rotatable shaft retaining member having co-axial rotary bearing with said rollback and having an abutment wall adapted in a moved position of said roll-back and through the movement of said roll-back to register with said opening of the roll-back, and in the normal non-bolt-retracting position of the roll-back to be out of register with said opening, abutment means on said casing adapted to abut said retaining memberto hold it against movement during movement of said roll-back, said shaft having its inner non-circular portion engaged in said opening at one side of the retaining member, its noncircular end portion disposed at the other side of said retaining member, and its annular groove in alignment with said abutment wall, said abutment wall adapted to abut said noncircular end portion upon longitudinal withdrawal movement in the normal non-bolt-retracting position of said roll-back.
3. In a latch, a latch casing, a latch bolt, a roll-back for retracting said bolt having a non-circular opening, a rotary handle shaft having an annular groove spaced from its end and non-circular aligned portions at each side of said groove, one of which constitutes an end portion and the other an inner portion, and a shaft retaining member having co-axial rotary bearing with said roll-back and having an abutment wall adapted in a moved position of said roll-back and through the movement of said roll-back to register with said opening of the roll-back, and in the normal non-bolt-retracting position of the roll-back to be out of register with said opening, and abutment means on said casing adapted to abut said retaining member and permitting of limited rotary movement of said member neeaass relatively to said casing and the roll-back, said shaft having its inner non-circular portion engaged in said opening at one side of the retaining member its non-circular end portion disposed at the other side of. said retaining member, and its annular groove in alignment with said abutment wall, said abutment wall adapted to abut said non-circular end portion upon longitudinal withdrawal movement in the. normal non-bolt-retracting position of said roll-back. 4.
