Abstract

745,101. Locks; stud and socket fastenings. GEE, C. R. Oct. 8, 1954 [Oct. 8, 1953], No. 27629/53. Class 44. A separable two-part locking device or padlock comprises a body part with lock mechanism mounted therein, a rod-like extension therefrom, segmental tooth formations on the end of the extension, a detachable head part having complementary segmental tooth formations adapted to be axially interposed slidably with those on the extension and to be turned relatively into axially locked engagement therewith to prevent axial movement, and rotatable means operably connected to the locking mechanism for rotation thereby and adapted to effect relative rotational displacement of segmental tooth formations respectively on the extension end on the detachable head into axially locked engagement. As shown, a rod d, rotatably mounted in an extension b of a body part c and operatively connected to a cylinder lock mechanism (not shown) located in the body-part, is provided with a disc-like head f. The extension b is provided with teeth g formed by grooves in the outer surface of the extension and by three longitudinal grooves h radially displaced at 120 degrees. The head f is of complementary notched formation having teeth which are brought into or out of register with those on the stem. One of the notches on the head f is complementary to a stop pin i on the stem. A head portion a houses a sleeve j rotatable, but constrained against axial movement therein, and is provided with teeth complementary to those on the stem. In use, the head portion a is slidable on to the stem when the teeth of the head portion are in register with the teeth g on the extension, whereafter the sleeve j is then turned by a key e of the cylinder lock through 60 degrees so that the teeth of the sleeve are inter-digitated with those on the stem to lock the head and body portions together. The head and body portions may be permanently attached to each other by a chain k or the like. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the stem and sleeve are formed with two longitudinal grooves thus requiring rotation of 90 degrees for engagement and disengagement of the complementary teeth. In another arrangement, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), the head f is replaced by a toothed head and the rotatable sleeve on the head a is dispensed with, the teeth being cut in the head a itself. The rotatable sleeve for the head a of the Fig. 1 arrangement may be of spring steel to enable it to be sprung into position in a groove on the head. The device is applicable to a safe door lock.
