This invention relates to improvements in locks.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and compact mechanism whereby the knob spindle of a lock or latch may be easily locked against turning at either side of a. door. More specifically stated, the object of the invention is to combine a dog or locking lever with a hollow spindle and a bolt in such a manner that the dog may be set at will to prevent relative movement between the bolt and spindle. One mechanism whereby these objects are attained is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and will be hereinafter fully described, the novel features being particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring particularly to the drawing by numerals, 1 designates a hollow spindle to one end of which the outer knob 2 is permanently secured. The inner end of the spindle is externally threaded, as at 3, and the inner knob y4 has its hub 5 internally threaded to engage the spindle and be secured thereto, longitudinal slots or openings 6 being provided in the spindle any oneof which may receive a pin 7 inserted radially through the hub 5 whereby f after the knob has been turned to the proper trated, the bolt is of tubular formation in its inner end portion and `the spindle passes through slots 11 in the sides of the bolt. The rocker arms 12 areforn'ied on a collar 13 and its operative position and will be caused to rock with the spindle in the operation of the lock. The front endl portion of the bolt is slidably mounted in a barrel 16 and is projected by a spring housed in the barrel while it is retracted by rotating the spindle and causing either rocker arm 12 to impinge .againsty the rear end of the corresponding slot 14. In one wall of each slot 11 is a notch 17 In the outer knob is housed a cylinder lock 18 to the plug of which is secured a rod 19 which fits closely but rotatably in the spindle and extends to a point just beyond the recesses 9, its inner end being diametrically slotted asl at 20,-and having recesses 21 corresponding to and registering with the recesses 9. The es cutcheon 22 has a hub 23 adapted to encircle the spindle and fitting at its outer end upon the extremity of the hub 5 of the inner knob. The hub'23 does not fit closely to the spindle but receives a collar 24 which iills the space between tlie spindle and said hub and is proter the slot 8 in the spindle and play in the recesses 9 and 21. Externa-Hy, a handle or lever 26 projects from the collar in alinement with the stud 25 and a finger 27 projects longitudinally from the collar to enter the slot 11 inthe adjacent side of the bolt and at times engage the notch 17. At the butt of the finger 27 is a shoulder 28' bearing against the edge of the escutcheon hub whereby to maintain` the proper relation between the iinger and the bolt, and said hub is constructed with a longitudinal notch or open-ended slot 29 to accommodate the lever handle 26 in assembling the parts, the handle working in and being guided y a circumferential slot 30 in the hub adj acent the escutcheon. The edge of the escutcheon is recessed, as at 31, to accommodate and guide the outer end of the lever handle 26 and a cap or cover plate 32, secured to the back of the escutcheon, fits around-the escutcheon hub and close to the handle to maintain the parts in proper assembled relation.
The end ofthe locking finger'27 is always within the slot 11 to which it is presented and the stud 25 is within the recesses 9 and 21.
To set the locking finger from the inside of the door it is necessary merely to rock the lever 26 which will turn the collar 24C about the escutcheon hub and swing the finger 27 into the notch 17 whereupon rotation of cit-her knob will be prevented inasmuch as the forces exerted upon the bolt by the rocker arm and the lookin finger will be directly opposed and none oi Ithe parts, consequently, can move. -Vhen the locking finger is set by rocking the lever 26, the stud 25 does not actuate the rod 19 and damage to the cylinder lock is thereby avoided. Should it be desired, however, to set the latch from the outer knob the proper key is inserted in the cylinder lock and turned, the rod 19 turning with the plug of the lock to bring one side of the recess 21 into engagement with the stud 25 and thereupon rock the collar 24 to swing the locking linger into the notch 17. When the finger is in inactive position, the spindle may be turned to retract the bolt and the recess 9 then permits the spindle to turn without hindrance from the stud 25.
lt will be noted that the mechanism is simple and compactand is Well adapt-ed to locks or latches in which the bolt is mounted in a barrel of small diameter. Both-knobs are secured on the same spindle and when the locking finger is in active position neither knob can be turned.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination wit-h a knob spindle, and a bolt arranged to be retracted by the spindle and held to a. rectilinear path, of afinger rotatively mounted on the spindle, and means for rocking the finger into positive direct engagement with the bolt to prevent retraction of the latter.
2. The combination with a knob spindle, and a bolt arranged to be retracted by the spindle, the bolt having an opening in its side and a notch in one wall of the opening, of a finger rotatively mounted on the spindle and having one end disposed within the opening in the side of the bolt, and means for rocking the finger into engagement with the notch to prevent retraction of the bolt.
8. The combination with a hollow knob spindle, and a bolt arranged to be retracted by the spindle, of knobs secured on the ends of the spindle, a lock mounted in the outer knob, a rod extending from said lock within the spindle to a point adjacent. the inner knob, a locking finger rotatably mounted adjacent the inner knob, and means whereby said finger may be actuated by said rod to engage the bolt and prevent retraction of the latter.
4. The combination of a hollow spindle, a
bolt arranged to be retracted thereby, a rod rotatably fitted in the spindle and operable from the outer end thereof, the spindle and` the rod having registering recesses at' the inner end of the rod, a locking4 finger rotatably mounted on the spindle to engage the bolt to prevent retraction thereof, and a memf ber connected with the finger and disposed within the recesses in the spindle and the rod.
5. The combination of a hollow spindle, a bolt retracted by the spindle, a rod rotatable within the spindle and operable from the outer end thereof, a finger mounted on the spindle near the inner end thereof, and engageable with the bolt to prevent retraction thereof, and a lost-motion connection between the finger and the inner end of the rod.
6. The combination of a spindle, a bolt retracted by the spindle, a collar rotatably fitted on the spindle, a finger projecting longitudinally from the collar to engage the bolt and prevent retraction of the bolt, and means fol rotating the collar.
7. The combination of a spindle, a bolt retracted thereby, an escutcheon 1iaving a hub encirchng the spindle, a collar rotatably fitted within the escutcheon hub and around 'the spindle, a finger projecting from the collar to engage the bolt and prevent retraction thereof, and a handle lever extending from the collar past the escutcheon.
