Manifestly, my primary. aim is to generally improve upon previously patented andrmarketed combination lock devicesof this general character by providing one which includesa simple and dependable arrangement of details calculated to promotereliable and. fool-proof action, whereby. to provide the userwith a substantially theft-proof door handle construction.

This extension has a "longitudinal slot 24 formed therein to serve as anaadapter or receptacle for the radiallyprojectible and retractible trip lever or finger 2%. Referring to Figure 11 it will be observed that this particular element comprises a fiat strip of metal constructed to fit in the adapter slot 25 andto project beyond the right hand open end thereof as illustrated in Figure 3., It
has a disk-like head 26 at one end provided with an. elongatedslotil slidably fulcrumedin-place as indicated at 28 in Figure 3. The free swingable end thereof indicated at 29 constitutes the finger portion and fits into a kerf 30 in a coupling or keeper pin 3|. This is in effect a plunger and is mounted in a suitable guideway in the extension 23. That is to say, the pin is slidable at right angles to the longitudinal dimension of the extension 23 and this sliding movement is effected by the action of the trip lever 25. When projected the pin 3| is engaged in the socket or aperture 29 which as before stated functions as a keeper and this constitutes the means for coupling the two parts It and I! together for rotation in unison. Incidentally when the parts are assembled, it is evident that the extension 23 projects telescopically and rotatably into the cup or socket |9. Referring again to Figure 11, I call attention to the features 32 which may be conveniently described as longitudinally spaced detents. Then referring to Figure 3, I call attention to the flat spring 33 located in the slot 24 and interposed between the bottom of the slot and the adjacent edge portion of the trip lever 25. It will be noted that one end portion of the spring is formed into a curl or coil as at 34 where it surrounds the head 23 and is properly anchored in place.
The parts l6 and I! are swivelly joined together as indicated at 35. This is simple collar and pin arrangement and includes a protective shell 35 suitably fastened on the head Hi. This serves to cover the features 20 and 3| to render them inaccessible.
Novel combination tumbler means is provided to keep the parts 25 and 3| normally retracted or retracted when occasion demands so that no matter how much the handle 2| is turned this will have no effect on the door lock bolt l5. This is a so-called combination means and the essential features thereof are shown in Figure 4. The numeral 31 for example designates what may be described as the master tumbler or annulus which rotatably surrounds the extension 23. This is in abutting relation with the shank 22 and the enlarged portion thereof is knurled and formed into a finger grip as indicated at 39. The adjacent reduced portion 39 is calibrated or graduated to serve as a rotary indicator for coaction with the fixed or relatively fixed index 46 as shown in Figure 1. The companion tumblers or rings are indicated by the numerals 4| and 42 respectively.
These tumblers have coacting detector and driving lugs 43 properly located for progressive and collective coordination. On the inner periphery of these tumblers I provide registerable notches 3211, these being adapted to receive the detents 32 when projected by the spring 33. Located between the tumblers are spacing washers M held against rotation by keying projections 45. All of these parts when assembled are housed within a shield or sleeve 46 as shown in Figure 1 which is attached to the door by a suitable attachin flange 41. This protects and encloses the vital mechanism of the construction.
Manifestly, when the notches 32a in the various tumblers are out of alignment with each other and are out of registry with the longitudinal open edge of the slot 24 they serve to cam the trip lever 25 into the slot 24 holding it in this retracted state against the tension of the spring 33. At the same time the plunger or pin 3| is held retracted and naturally there is an idling coupling between the two parts i6 and IT so that rotation of the handle 2| does not effect a movement of the shaft or stem [8. This is the unlocked state of the structure. When it is desired to lock the parts l6 and IT together to rotate as a unit it is obviously necessary to liberate the trip lever so that its complemental spring serves to project coupling pin 3| into the keeper socket 20. To do this it is necessary to bring all of the notches 32a in the respective tumblers 31, 4| and 42 into alignment or registry with the detents 32. By referring to the dialing or indicator means it is possible to turn the master tumbler 31 in such a way as to pick up and turn the next adjacent tumbler so that it in turn actuates the final tumbler 42 and by a proper combination of turn or rotary adjustment, known only to the user of the lock, it becomes possible to register the notches 32a as shown in Figures 3 and 4. Obviously, the minute that these features come into registry with one another this liberates the depressed spring projected lever 25. In so doing, the detents literally jump into the notches 32a and this allows the plunger or pin 3| to project itself into the keeper hole 29, Naturally, this pin couples the two parts it and I! so that they may rotate in unison to positively control the movement of the locking bolt I5. The gist of the invention, as I see it, has to do with the adoption and use of the companion parts l5 and I1, these being swivelly joined together, one part I? being provided with a keeper 20 and the other part IS with a spring projected trip controlled coupling pin 3| which under predetermined conditions and controlled by the tumbler means is liberated to join the two parts I6 and I1 together for rotation in unison. Novelty is also predicated upon the coordination existing between the manually controlled tumbler mechanism mechanically coordinated with the detent elements 32 on the spring pressed finger or lever 25, whereby it is permissible to positively depress or liberate the trip lever whenever occasion demands. Consequently, the mechanism is under the complete control of the authorized user and obviates the need of having a key, as is customary.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice, if desired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In an operating mechanism for the shaft of a slidable locking bolt, a handle unit swivelly connected with said shaft, said shaft being provided with keeper means, a concealed spring pressed trip lever mounted in said handle unit, a coupling pin operatively connected with said lever and movable radially into and out of engagement with said keeper, and manually regulated multiple tumbler means mounted on said handle unit and cooperable with said lever maintaining the lever either in a retracted ineffective state or to permit it to be liberated and projected to an active state for actuating the coupling pin.
2. In a lock operating device of the class described, a stem provided at one end with a cuplike coupling head having an aperture in one wall constituting a keeper hole, a complemental handle unit including a hand grip and a shank, said shank fitting telescopically into said cup, means swivelly connecting the shank to said cup, a spring projected trip lever mounted axially in the shank, a coupling pin slidably mounted for radial .movement in a guide in said shank, and matched for projection into said keeper hole When released, said trip lever being operatively connected with said coupling pin, and manually regulated and controllable dialing means mounted on said shank and cooperable with the trip lever in such a manner as to depress it into an inactive state or liberated for projection to a position to actuate the coupling pin.
3. In a structure of the class described, a rotary lock actuating stem, a hand grip equipped operating unit for said stem, means swivelly joining said stem to said unit, a radially movable coupling pin cooperable with the stem and unit, radially movable retractible and projectible trip means for controlling the activity of said coupling pin and a dial equipped with successively and collectively operable tumbler means associated with said handle unit and structurally coordinated With said trip means to render it inactive or active as occasion demands.
4. In a structure of the class described, a shaft provided with a cylindrical coupling head having a keeper hole in the side of the head, a handle unit including a hand grip and a shank having an extension fitted telescopically and rotatable into said coupling head, said extension being provided with a radial guide passage, a plunger pin slidable in said passage and engageable with said keeper hole, said extension being provided with a longitudinal slot, a spring pressed trip lever contained in said slot and connected with said coupling pin for controlling it, said trip lever being provided with a series of detents and a plurality of separately and collectively turnable tumbler rings mounted for rotation on said extension and cooperable with said slot and detents, said rings being provided with notches into which said detents are projectible When aid notches are aligned with each other and with said detents.
5. In a structure of the class described, a bandle unit including a hand grip having a shank, said shank being provided with an extension, said extension being provided With a longitudinal slot and a communicating guideway extending radially of the shank, a coupling pin slidable in said guideway, a trip lever contained in said slot, spring means for projecting the lever to an active position, said lever being provided at one end with a finger engageable with said coupling pin, said lever being further provided with longitudinally spaced projections constituting detents projectible through one edge portion f the slot, and a series of tumbler rings surrounding said extension in coordinated relationship, said rings having detecting and driving lugs to permit the rings to rotate progressively and collectively, and said rings being provided on their inner peripheral surfaces with cam notches for reception of said detents when said notches are aligned longi- I
