Referring to the drawing by reference characters, the invention is shown as embodied in a vehicle door latch which is indicated generally at 10. As shown the latch includes a body 11, adapted to be secured to a vehicle door 12. The body 11 includes a flange 13.
' The body 11 supports a rotatable shaft 14 which, on thev outer face of the base has a bolt 15 lixed thereon and at' the inner face has a ratchet member 16 xed thereon. The rotary bolt 15eXtends through an aperture in the door 12-andcoacts with astrike member.17 which has teeth 18 thereon and 17 is secured to the door pillar 19 by fastening members 20. The rotary bolt includes teeth 21 which engage the teeth 18.
The ratchet 16 is adapted to be engaged by an ear 22 on a dog 23 which is shown as pivoted at 24 to the body 11. The dog is engaged by a spring 25 mounted on a fastening member 26. The dog is thus normally urged to engaged position against stop 27.
The dog 23 is shown as adapted to be rocked by a crank 28 mounted on a shaft 29. The crank 28 is adapted to be actuated by a remote control member 30 on the inside of a door. The remote control member 30 may be actuated by an inside handle (not shown).
The crank 28 includes an arm 31 which is disposed under an ear 32 on the dog 23. When the crank 28 is rocked the arm 31 will raise the ear 32 to rock the dog and free the bolt 15.
The dog 23 also includes a downwardly extending arm 40. The arm 40 has a slot 41 therein. The slot 41 is open towards the left in Figs. 1 and 8 and includes a stepped portion 42 forming a shoulder 43. Above the shoulder 43 the slot is elongated at 44 and includes an inclined portion 45, another inclined portion 46 and a downwardly facing shoulder 47.
Above the arm 40 a rotatable and' axially Vshiftable actuating member 48 is disposed. The actuating member is shown as integral and includes an intermediate plane portion 49 and a cylindrical end portion 50 disposed adjacent to the llange 13. The actuating member also includes a cylindrical portion 51 which is co-aXial with the portion 50. The portion' 51 is engaged by bent up tongues 52 on the lock body 11. The portion 51 is disposed adjacent the outer face of thendoor and adjacent to a release member indicated generally at 53. The release member 53 is in the nature of'a handle and includes a body 54 with a finger grip portion 55 thereon.
The body 54 has a chamber 58 therein in which tumblers 59 are arranged. The construction includes a closure 60, which is non-rotatable and which supports a nonrotataole sleeve 61. VThe tumblers 59 are rotated in sequence in the usual manner by a dial member 62 which has a key 63 thereon tting in a keyway 64 in one of the tumblers 59. A spring 65 normally urges the dial member 62 outwardly. Within the sleeve 61 a lock barrel 66 slides. The lock barrel 66 includes a linger-tip portion 67 which projects for operation by a finger-tip. A spring 68 normally urges the push button 67 outwardly. The lock barrel includes a ball clutch 69 which, when the tumblers are codified, releases the ball to permit rotation of the lock barrel 67.
Details of the ball clutch and the tumbler lock are fully disclosed and claimed in applicants co-pending application, Ser. No. 185,411, ilecl September 18, 1950, and a further description of the clutching arrangement is deemed unnecessary.
The lock barrel supports a core 78 which is rotatable in the barrel when a proper key 71 is inserted and rotated. The core member has a forwardly projecting tongue 72.
The shaft 29 which supports the crank 28 is mounted onpa bracket 75 which may be spot welded as at 76 to the flange 13. y
Remote from the pivot 29 the bracket 75 has an outwardly directed cylindrical portion 77 which is integral therewith. The portion 77 receives the cylindrical portion 50 on the actuating member 48. Thus the actuating member is supported at one end by the portion 77 and at the other end by the tongues 52 bent'from the base 11. Adjacent to the cylindrical portion 51 the actuating member includes an integralend portion 78 which is circular in shape. The portion 78 is provided with an accurate slot 79 through which the tongue 72 on the lock barrel core 70 is arranged.
When the push button 67 is pushed inwardly the core 70 will be advanced and will engage the end 78 on the actuating membery 48 and will move the actuating member to the right in Figs. l and 8.
When the parts are in unlocked condition a tongue 80 struck from the actuating member intermediate portion will engage the shoulder 43 and will move the shoulderv and consequently the dog 23, thus moving the ear 22 from.
