  • the bracket 160 includes spaced arms 164 each of which has a slot with outwardly directed 4wings 166 projecting from the portion 164. 'The wings 166 are in the path of the rollers 94, previously described. These rollers 94 have an up position when the locking arm is in locked position and have a down position when the locking arm is in unlocked position.
  • One of the brackets 4160 is mounted in each of the pillars on opposite sides of the vehicle and the brackets are connected by a Bowden wire l167.

Also means is provided whereby should the operator thoughtlessly close a door while the coincidental parts are in locked position, the mechanism will restore the doors to unlocked condition so that the operator will not lock himself out of the vehicle.

The Ageneral object of the invention is to provide an improved lock which is particularly adapted for use on the door of an automotive vehicle.
Another object of the invention is to provide door latohing means including a novel lock bolt.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel bolt operating device for use in a door lock assembly.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novelly mounted bolt.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a no-vel bolt strike.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel strike and dovetail for use with a latch.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel bolt locking means.
A further object of the invention is to provide a vehicle door lock which includes novel means for causing the bolt to move to release position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a door latch wherein a locking member is pivotally mounted and wherein the locking member has portions thereon operable from within and from without the door to permit the locking member to be moved to and `from locking position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel handle assembly.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel bolt `and strike construction.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a novel pivoted locking member.
Another object of the invention is to provide Ia novel anti rattle construction for a door lock.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel door Ilock abutment member.
An additional object of the 4invention is to provide a novel wedge `and abutment sliding wedge and abutment pressure centering construction.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel spring mounting for a door lock bolt.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby when the llocking member is in locked position and the door is closed the locking member will be moved to unlocked position.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel locking means for a door latch whereby when the door is closed and the locking means is locked it will be selectively possible to either restore the lock to unlocked condition or to leave the lock in locked position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel keyless locking means for a door lock.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel coincidental door locking means and system for a door lock wherein When one door is locked or unlocked another lock will be simultaneously locked or unlocked.
Other objects and `advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:

Referring to the drawing by reference characters, the invention is shown as embodied in a lock which is indicated generally at 10. As shown, the lock includes an attaching base portion 11, which may be held on the end of a door D by screws which engage in threaded apertures 12 -in the base.
The -base 11 includes an `outer flange 13 which is disposed adjacent to the outer Wall of the door on which the lock is mounted. The base also includes an inner ange 14 which is disposed adjacent to the inner Wall of the door on which the lock is mounted.
The base 11 is provided with a circular hole |15 which receives Ia shaft 16. A bolt member 17 is shown as provided With a circular hole 18 which receives the shaft 16. The bolt is shown as held on the shaft by means of a pin 19 which passes through the bolt.
The outer end portion 20 of the shaft is supported in an aperture 21 in an abutment member 22 (to be later described) and the extreme outer end of the shaft projects slightly beyond the outer portion of the abutment member 22.
rIlhe inner end portion of the shaft 16, inside the base 11, is of reduced size to provide a shoulder 24 and is squared as at 25. This squared portion 25 ts in a similarly squared portion on a bolt release member 26. The inner end portion of the shaft is rounded to receive `a spring supporting collar 26' and the eXtreme inner end of the shaft is riveted over at 27 to hold the release member 25 against the shoulder 24 to prevent rotation relative between the shaft and release member and to hold `the bolt parts as a unit.
A washer 28 which lits tightly on the shaft 16 spaces the bolt 17 from the base A11.
The abutment member 22, yas shown, has tongues 3'1 thereon which pass through slots in the base l1 to hold the abutment member 22 in place. The abutment member 22 has an upper portion 30 which includes a stepped shoulder 3l. The abutment also has a lower portion 32. The portions 30 and 32 are joined at one end by an end portion 33. The other end of the abutment is open and in this open portion the elongated body portion 34 of the bolt 17 is positioned. The bolt has a tooth 35 which is generally in the shape of `a gear tooth. The tooth 35 projects below the portion 32 of the abutment and is adapted to engage a strike 37, to be presently described.
The outer por-tion 22 of the abutment is disposed parallel to the base 11 and Ias previously stated receives the end portion of the bolt shaft 16 to support the bolt shaft. It will thus be seen that the bolt shaft, and in turn the bolt, is supported between two spaced, rigidly connected, mem-bers 11 and 22, so that the bolt is held against a shifting of its axis.
The bolt may lbe made of suitable metal, plastic or other material, is preferably of uniform thickness throughout its length and when in engaged position its upper str-aight surface is inclined downwardly, as shown in FIG. 4, yand when in strike disengaging position the upper surface of the bolt is substantially horizontal.
The strike 37 comprises; `a general C-shaped member which has parallel front and rear faces 40 and '41 and has spaced upper and lower jaw forming portions 42 and 43 joined by a vertical portion 44. Screws 45 which pass through the strike and engage in threaded apertures in the door pillar serve to hold the strike in operative position.
As shown, the upper jaw portion 42 has a recess 46 therein, which receives a sliding wedge member 47 mounted on a pin 48. A spring 49 surrounding the pin 48 and disposed in a recess 50 in the wedge 47 is arranged to constantly urge the wedge 47 forwardly. As shown, the upper surface of the wedge 47 slidably engages the upper surface of the recess 46 of the jaw 43. n
The bolt tooth 35 engages similar teeth 51 and 52 on the lower jaw of the strike. In advance of the tooth 52 the strike -is inclined downwardly at 53. Y Y
In use when the door is being closed the `abutment member 30 moves between the jaws 42 `and. 43 of the strike and the tooth 35 on the bolt engages the inclined portion 53 of the strike and rocks the bolt so that the tooth 35 passes over the tooth 52 and drops behind the tooth 52 (as shown in broken lines in FIG. 4) to hold the door in safety latched position. Further inward movement of the door causes the tooth 35 of the bolt to engage and be rocked by the seco-nd tooth 51 until the bolt moves sufliciently to allow it to drop behind the tooth 51 whereupon t-he bolt has moved to fully engaged position as shown in FIG. 4 and the door is latched.
While this is occurring the -stepped shoulder 31 on the portion 30 of the abutment Imoves to engage a forward stepped corner 57 on the sliding wedge 47 to thus move the wedge 47 rearwardly against the tension of the spring 49. When the bolt is fully engaged the sliding wedge is constantly urged outwardly by its spring to thus hold the parts in tightly clamped relation. When the door is fully closed and the bolt tooth is engaged behind the tooth 52, the portion 32 of the abutment engages a portion S5 of the strike and the stepped portion 31y of the abutment engages the part 57 of the wedge 47 to thus securely hold the parts together.
'Ilhe bolt shaft being supported by the base 11 and by the abutment 22 cannot move upwardly or down-wardly and the door cannot open because of the engagement of the bolt teeth behind the strike teeth. The parts are thus held in tight-ly closed relationship and the thrust upon the bolt is directed towards the axis of the bolt shaft. In other words, the bolt is in compression.
As shown, the lcurvature of the bolt tooth 35 at 60 and the curvature of the strike tooth 51 at 611 in their areas of engagement are on arcs R or equal radii.
The inner face of the strike tooth 52 has a surface 62 on an arc R of radius equal to the radii of the curvature at 60 yand 61. Thus the portion 60 off the bolt tooth engages the portion 62 of the strike tooth 52 in an area of equal radius of curvature when the bolt is in safety latched position.
The construction of bolt, abutment and strike is such that the bolt shaft and the bolt cannot raise from the engaged position and the parts are held in tightly closed position without yaid of any dog or similar device and yet they are free to be moved when desired.
The collar 216 on the shaft 16 receives the coils of a spring 66. One end of the spring engages in a hole 67 in the flange 13 and the other end of the spring engages a tongue 68 bent up from lthe bolt release member 26. The spring normally urges the bolt in an anti-clockwise direction in FIG. l, so that the bolt is normally urged towards its strike.
A locking member is shown at 80. This locking member includes `a body portion 81, which in cross section comprises angularly `arranged portions 82 and 83. At one end, the locking member has a flange S4 and at the other end has an elongated ange 85 which comprises a locking arm. The locking member anges have holes 87 therein through which a supporting shaft 88 extends. The ends of the shaft 88 pass through holes in the anges 13 and 14 and are shown as riveted o-ver at the ends 89 to bold the shaft in place. The locking arm in its unlocked position engages a tongue 90 on the ange 14 and in its locked position engages a tongue 91 on the ange 14. A snap over spring 92 which engages the ange -14 and the locking arm 85 serves to hold the locking arm in either locked or in unlocked position.
To provi-de for coincidental locking, should this be desired, the locking member flange 814 is bent to provide a portion 70 which extends over the ange 13. This portion 70 is again bent to provide a portion 71 which is parallel to the portion 84. The portion 71 is again bent to provide a portion 72 which is parallel to the portion 70. IIhe portion 72 supports a shaft 93 for a roller 94. The roller 94 coacts with la coincidental locking device which will be later described.
The locking arrn 85 is adapted to be moved upwardly to unlocked position and Adownwardly to locked position by an operating rod 95, which has a bent end 96 which passes through a hole in the locking arm. A resilient clip 97 which includes a tip 98 which passes through a hole in the rod end 96 and also includes a loop 99 which engages the rod '95 serves to hold the rod in place. 'The rod has an upper end portion (not shown) thereon by means of which the rod may be operated from inside the vehicle to move the locking arm to and from locked position.
The release member 26 is angular in shape and includes an upwardly directed portion i100 and a second portion 101 which is disposed substantially at a right angle to the portion 100. The releasing member portion 100 extends under the body portion 81 of the locking member and at its upper end has a tongue 102 thereon which extends perpendicular to the base 11. The locking member portion 83 is cut away as at 104 to provide a notch 105. The tongue 102 on the release member 26 moves in this notch 105 at all times when the release member is rocked.
It is important that the release member is under n0 strain whatever and that the bolt is held in position independently of the member which releases the bolt.
The release member .26 is adapted to be rocked by an actuating member 109 which includes a body portion having angularly arranged portions 111 and 112 which as shown in lFIG. 1 and FIG. 3 are disposed over the angular portions 82 and 83 of the locking member. The actuating member, 'at its ends, has upwardly directed end anges 113 and 114 which are apertured to receive the shaft `88 so that tne actuating member is slidable along and rotatable on the shaft 88.
The shaft 88 at its right end in FIG. l has a collar 115 thereon. The actuating member flange 113 is slidable on this collar and the collar extends through the aperture in the locking arm 85 and engages the flange 14 at one end. The other end of the collar 115 is engaged by one end of a spring 116. The other end of the spring 116 engages a ange 114 on the actuating member. The result is that when the actuating member 109 is moved from its normal position in FIG. l, to the right it will tend to compress the spring 116 so that when pressure on the actuating member is removed the spring 116 will return the actuating member to its normal position in FIG. l.
The flange 114 includes a portion 117 which extends parallel to the shaft 8S and a portion 118` parallel to the flange 114. The portion 118 FIG. 8, has an elongated slot 119 therein and this elongated slot includes semicircular portions 120. A reduced cylindrical and portion 121 of a plunger 122 loosely ts in the slots in the portion 118.
The plunger 122 is shown asmounted in a handle 123 which has a bore 124 therein. The push member 122 is mounted on the core 125 of a lock barrel 126. The lock barrel has a push button 127 which extends through a hole 128 in the handle. A spring 129 normally urges the push button, lock barrel and plunger 122 downwardly in FIG. 5.
A key 130 is providedwhich turns the core barrel and plunger in a clockwise and anti-clockwise position. Locks such as show'n are in common use and their detailed construction forms no part of the present invention.
The plunger 122 is supported for sliding and turning movement in a collar 131 which is shown as held in the bore 124 by a split ring 132. The plunger 122 ts in the slot 119 and when the push button 127 is pushed inwardly to plunger shoulder 122 moves the actuating member 109 upwardly in FIG. 5 to rock the release member 26 and release the bolt.
When the key 130 is turned, the plunger 122 will be turned and wings 133 on the push member will rock the actuating member in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction depending upon the direction in which the key is turned. After use the key 130 is always returned to a neutral position and the slot 119 is of suicient width to allow the actuating member to be moved to and from locked position by the inside operating rod 95 independent of operation by the key 130.
The actuating member 109 has a cut away portion 134 forming a notch 135 which is arranged above the notch 105 in the locking member. The notch 135 is shown as shorter than the notch 105. The releasing member tongue 102. is disposed in the notches 105 and 135. The construction is such that when the locking member is in the unlocked position the tongue 102 on the release member will be in the path of the actuating member so that when the actuating member is moved to the right in FIG. l, the left wall 136 of the portion deiining the notch 135 will rock the releasing member 26 to move the bolt from the strike.
When, however, the locking member is in locked position as in FIG. 2, the actuating member will have been rocked so that it moves above the tongue 102, consequently movement of the actuating member will not move the tongue 102 and pushing on the push button 126 will not release the bolt.
The locking member does not move during operation of the actuating member. The distance between the portion 118 of the actuating member and the coincidental locking member portion 71 (see FIG. 5) is suiiicient to allow the actuating member to move to bolt releasing position.
In order to rock the release member 26 and free the bolt from within the vehicle, I provide an inside release member 140, which is pivoted as at 141 upon the ange 14. The member 140 has a lower arm 142, an upper arm 143 and a lateral arm 144.
The lower arm 142 has a transverse slot 145 therein in which the bent end 146 of a remote control rod 147 is positioned. A clip 148 similar to the clip 97 previously described, serves to hold the rod 147 in place. The rod 147 is adapted to be moved to the right in FIG. 2 by an inside remote control device such as a handle (not shown) shown).
The upper arm 143 of the inside release member 140 is bent at 150 to provide a raised portion 151 which passes over the locking arm S5. The portion 151 has a tongue 152 which is bent at right angles to the portion 151. At its end the tongue 152 has a downward directed cam tongue 153.
The ilange 113 on the actuating member is cut away to provide a cam tongue 154. When the member 140 is rocked the cam tongue 153 engages the cam tongue 154 on the actuating member and by a camming action rocks the tongue 154 and the actuating member and with it rocks the locking member so that the locking member moves to its unlocked position.
The lateral arm 144 has a notch 155 in its outer end. This notch 155 receives a tongue 156 bent up from the portion 101 of the release member 26. When the remote control rod 147 is moved to the right in FIG. 2 the inside release member 140 will be rocked and this will through the tongue and slot engagement at 155, 156 rock the release member 26 to free the bolt.
This releasing action by the inside release member 140 occurs regardless of whether the locking member is in locked or in unlocked position. For example, when the locking member is in unlocked position the cam tongue 154 on the actuating member will be down and will be out of the path of the cam tongue 153. When, however, the locking member is locked, as in FIG. 2, movement of the member will through the camming action of the parts 153 and 154 (FIG. 1) shift the locking arm to unlocked position and will simultaneously through the engagement of the tongue 156 on the release member 26 with the wall of the slot on the actuating member rock the bolt releasing member 26 to bolt releasing position.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that when the locking arm is in unlocked position, movement of the actuating member 109 by the push button 127 will cause the actuating member portion 136 to engage the tongue 102 to thereby move the releasing member 26 and thus free the bolt.
Also when the parts are unlocked movement of the inside release rod 147 will rock the member 140 which through the tongue slot connection 155-156 rock the release arm 26 to free the bolt.
When the parts are in locked position movement of the actuating member 109 will cause the portion 135 on the actuating member to pass over the tongue 102 so that the bolt will not be released. However, when the parts are in locked position movement of the inside release member 147 will rock the member 140 and through the tongue and slot connection 155, 156 will move the release member to free the bolt.
Should the parts be in locked position when the door is closed the bolt 17 will be rocked by engagement with the strike. This will rock the release member 26. Rocking of the release member will through the tongue and slot connection 155, 156 rock the inside release arm 140 with the end 146 on the member 147 idly entering the slot 145. Rocking of the member 140 will cause the cam portions 153 and 154 to rock the locking arm 85 to unlocked position. Thus the accidental locking of the door will be avoided through the restoring action of the -cam parts 153 and 154.
However, should the operator wish to lock the door, he may move the inside lock member 95 downwardly while the door is open. He will then push the push button 127 inwardly and will close the door with the push button held inwardly. This action will cause the strike teeth to rock the bolt and this will rock the release member 26 which in turn through the tongue slot connection 155, 156 rock the inside release member 140 and will rock the cam portion 153. However, since the actuating member is to the right of the position shown in FIG. 1, the cam portion 154 will be out of the path of the cam 153 and this cam y153 will move idly into the slot 135 and thus the actuating member and in turn the locking member will remain in locked position. After the door has thus been closed with the push button pushed inwardly the operator releases the push button and the door remains locked.
The coincidental locking device previously mentioned includes a U-shaped bracket 160 which is mounted in l each of the car body pillars 161 to rotate on shafts 162. The bracket 160 includes an operating end portion 163 which is accessible from within the vehicle. The bracket 160 includes spaced arms 164 each of which has a slot with outwardly directed 4wings 166 projecting from the portion 164. 'The wings 166 are in the path of the rollers 94, previously described. These rollers 94 have an up position when the locking arm is in locked position and have a down position when the locking arm is in unlocked position.
One of the brackets 4160 is mounted in each of the pillars on opposite sides of the vehicle and the brackets are connected by a Bowden wire l167. One of the brackets is connected to the wire at one side of the shaft 162 and the other side of the other bracket is oo n- 'Z' nected to the Bowden wire at the other side of the shaft. As a result the two operating portions will move upwardly or `downwardly together.
When the operator wishes to lock all of the doors he may after he has opened one of the doors, push downwardly on the inside lock member 95, he will then push the button 127 inwardly and will close the door with the button 127 pushed inwardly. This will cause the one door being closed to remain locked. As this one door is closing the coincidental locking member 94 will engage one of the flaring jaws 166 of the adjacent bracket 160. lf this bracket 160 is in the locked position both brackets will remain in locked position. If the bracket 160 is in the unlocked position the member 94 will move it to locked position.
If the brackets 160 are in locked position when the operator closed the door without pushing in on the push button 127 the coincidental mechanism will restore all of the locks to unlocked condition.
Thus it will be seen that the construction described herein provides means whereby the operator may by the simple act of closing one door lock all of the doors. Also means is provided whereby should the operator thoughtlessly close a door while the coincidental parts are in locked position, the mechanism will restore the doors to unlocked condition so that the operator will not lock himself out of the vehicle.
In FIGS. 6 and 7 a modification of the invention is shown, The operating parts of this modification are similar to the parts previously described with the exception that in the modification the shaft a supports a dog 26a. This dog has a tooth 170 thereon. The tooth 170 engages a ratchet member 171 which has a squared portion 172 mounted on the squared portion 173 on the shaft 174. This shaft 174 is supported in an abutment member 30a similar to the abutment member 30. In the modication, instead of the rotary or pivoted bolt 17 the bolt in the modification is of the gear type and is indicated at 175. It is secured on the shaft 174 by a pin 176. The bolt and abutment work in conjunction with a strike 37a which is similar to the strike 37, previously described.
The operation of the modiiication is the same as that described in connection with the operation of the construction of FIGS. l to 5, above.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. In an automotive vehicle door latch, a base, a rotary bolt movable on the base to engaged and released positions, means to hold the bolt in engaged position, a shaft,
a locking member extending across said base and having end flanges pivoted on said shaft, an actuating member operable to release the bolt, means supporting the actuating member on said shaft for sliding movement to and from bolt releasing position and for swinging movement with the locking member to and from locking position, and means to release the bolt when the actuating member is operated while the locking member is turned to one position about its pivot, the last means being ineffective to release the bolt when the actuating member is similarly moved ywhile the locking member is turned to another position about its pivot, and key operated lock controlled means accessible from without the vehicle for moving the locking member to either position.
2. In a door lock, a base, a bolt, a shaft mounted on said base and supporting the bolt for movement to engaged and to released positions, a flange at each side of said base, an actuating member operable to release the bolt, locking means operable when in locked position to render said actuating member ineffective to release the bolt, said locking means including a locking member having spaced end anges disposed adjacent to said base flanges, said actuating member having spaced end flanges, means pivotally supporting said locking member anges and said actuating member flanges on Vsaid base `flanges, one of said locking member flanges including an inside locking arm, inside means for moving said locking arm to and from locked position, outside key operated lock control means for moving the locking member to and from locking position, means to hold said locking member in locked or in unlocked position, and inside manual means operable to release the bolt.
3. Ln a door lock, a base, a bolt, la shaft mounted on said base and supporting the bolt for movement to engaged land to released positions, a movable actuating member, means to release -the bolt when tire actuating member is moved in one direction, locking means operable when in locked position to render said actuating member ineffective to release the bolt, a flange at each side of said base, said locking means including a locking member having spaced end flanges' disposed adjacent to said base ilanges, means pivotally supporting said locking member flanges on said base flanges, one of said locking member flanges including an inside locking arm, inside means for moving said inside locking arm to and from locked position, outside key operated lock control means for moving the locking member to and from locking position, means to hold said locking member in locked or in unlocked position, and inside manual means operable to release the bolt.
4. ln a door lock, a base, a bolt, a shaft mounted on said base and supporting the bolt for movement to engaged and to released positions, a movable actuating member, means to release the bolt when the actuating member moved in one direction, locking means operable when in locked position to render said actuating member ineffective to release the bolt, a ilange at each side of said base, said locking means including a locking member having spaced end anges disposed adjacent to said base flanges, means pivotally supporting said locking member anges on said base anges, one of said locking member ilanges including an inside locking arm, inside means for moving said inside locking arm to and from locked position, outside key operated lock control means for moving the locking member to and from locking position, means to hold said locking member in locked or in unlocked position, inside manual means operable to release the bolt, and restoring means including coacting parts on the actu-ating member `and on the inside manual release means and actuated by movement of the bolt upon a closing movement of the door when the locking member is in locked position for restoring the locking member to unlocked condition.
5. ln an automobile door lock, a substantially planar base adapted to be secured upon the end of a door, said base having edge flanges thereon, an elongated bolt, said bolt including a body portion disposed on one side of said base, means pivotally supporting said bolt body portion for movement about an axis which is perpendicular to the base so that the bolt body moves in a plane which is parallel to the base, said bolt body including a strike engaging part, means urging the bolt body towards strike engaging position, a bolt releasing member rigid with the bolt body, said releasing member having a free end portion, said releasing memberbeing adapted to rock the bolt body from strike engaging position, the releasing member being mounted to move in la plane which is parallel to the plane of the base and is disposed on the other side of said base, `a locking member having edge flanges pivoted on said base edge flanges, an outside operated actuating member mounted to move along the locking member in a plane parallel to the base to bolt releasing position, means on the actuating member engaging the releasing member for rocking the releasing member to move the bolt from strike engaging position when the actuating member is actuated, said locking member being operable when in locked position to render said actuating member ineffective to release the bolt, said locking member including an inside locking portion, inside means for moving said inside locking portion to and from locked position, outside key operated lock controlled means for moving the locking member to and from locking position, means to hold said locking member in locked or in unlocked position, and inside manual means operable to release the bolt.
6. An automobile door lock including a substantially planar base adapted to be secured upon the end of a door, a ange on said base, an elongated bolt, said bolt including a body portion disposed on one side of said base, means pivotally supporting said bolt body portion on said base for movement about an axis which is perpendicular to the base so that the bolt moves in a plane which is parallel to the base, said bolt body including a strike engaging part, means urging the bolt body towards strike engaging position, y'a bolt releasing member rigid with the bolt body portion, said releasing member having a free end portio-n, said releasing member being adapted to rock the bolt body from strike engaging position, the releasing member being mounted to move in a plane which is parallel to the plane of the base and is disposed on the other side of said base, an outside operated actuating member mounted on the base for movement in a plane parallel to the base to bolt releasing position, a locking member movable to Iand from locked position, means mounting the actuating member for bodil movement on the locking member and for swinging movement from locked to unlocked position with the locking member, lock operated means for moving the locking member from locked to unlocked position, bolt release means on said yactuating member for moving the bolt releasing member to bolt releasing position when the actuating member is moved while the lock-ing member is in unlocked position, said last means being ineffective to release the bolt when the door is closed and the actuating member is operated while the locking member is in locked position, manually operated inside means to move the locking member from `locked to unlocked position and vice versa, inside manual release means pivotally mounted on said base ange, tongue and slot means connecting the inside manual release means and the bolt releasing member whereby the inside manual means moves the bolt releasing member to release the bolt, means including a part on the inside manual release means operative when the locking member is in locked position and the door is closed to restore the locking member to unlocked position, and means to render said restoring means ineffective to restore the `locking member to unlocked position when the locking member is in locked position and the actuating member is moved to bolt releasing position and the door is closed.
7. A door lock including a base having side flanges thereon, a locking member extending across said base, a shaft extending across said base, said locking member being pivoted on said shaft, an actuating member, said eactuating member having end anges pivoted to move about the axis of said shaft, means whereby said actuating member moves along the axis of said shaft, means whereby when either of said members rocks about the axis of said shaft it will cause the other member to simultaneously rock with it, a bolt, a shaft on said base, said bolt being secured on said shaft, the bolt having a toothed portion adapted to engage a strike, a bolt releasing member mounted on said bolt shaft, said bolt releasing member having a releasing tongue thereon, said locking member having a slot in which said tongue moves, said actuating member having a slot receiving said releasing member tongue, one wall which defines said actuating member slot being adapted to engage said tongue so that when the actuating member is moved along the axis of said shaft it rocks said tongue and said releasing member, outside means adapted to move said actuating member to bolt releasing position, inside pivoted bolt release means, tongue and slot means connecting said inside release means and said release member and adapted to rook the release member to free the bolt, said inside release member having a cam tongue thereon, said actuating member -having a cam tongue thereon disposed when the parts are in locked'V position adjacent to inside release member cam tongue and adapted to move the locking member to unlocked position when the inside release member is locked While the actuating member is in locked position, said actuating' member cam tongue being out of the path of the inside release member cam tongue when the actuating member is moved to bolt releasing position.
8. A coincidental door locking system including a body having a plurality of doors hung thereon, `a lock on each door, each lock including a base, a bolt, a shaft mounted on said base and supporting the bolt for movement to engaged and to released positions, a movable actuating member, means to release the bolt when the actuating member is moved in one direction, locking means operable when in locked .position to render said actuating member ineffective to release the bolt, a ange at each side of said base, said locking means including a locking member having spaced end flanges disposed adjacent to said base anges, means pivotally supporting said locking member flanges on said base anges, one of said looking member anges including an inside locking arm, inside means for moving said inside locking arm to and from locked position, outside key operated lock control means for moving the locking member to and from locking position, means to hold said locking member in looked or in unlocked position, and inside manual means operable to release the bolt, each of said locking members having a coincidental locking portion projecting beyond the end of the associated door, and means to coincidentally move all of the coincidental locking portions to and from locked position.
9. A door lock including a base having side flanges thereon, a shaft extending across said base, a locking member pivoted on said shaft and movable about the axis of said shaft from locked to unlocked position and vice versa, an actuating member, said actuating member having end flanges pivoted to move about the axis of said shaft and to move along the axis of said shaft, means whereby when either of said members rocks about the axis of said shaft it will cause the other member to simultaneously rock with it, a bolt adapted to engage -a strike, bolt releasing means including a releasing tongue, said locking member having an elongated slot receiving said releasing tongue, said actuating member vhaving a slot substantially :aligned with said locking member slot and receiving said releasing tongue, one wall which denes said actuating member slot being adapted to engage said tongue so that when the locking member is in unlocked position and the actuating member is moved along the axis of said shaft the actuating member will move said releasing tongue to bolt releasing position and outside means adapted to move said actuating member to bolt releasing position, said releasing tongue being out of the path of the wall of the slot in the actuating member when the locking member is in locked position and the actuating member is moved along the axis of the shaft.
10. A door lock including a base having side flanges thereon, fa shaft extending across said base, a locking member pivoted on said shaft and movable about the axis of said shaft from locked to unlocked position and vice versa, an actuating member, said actuating member having end flanges pivoted to move about the axis of said shaft and to move along the axis of said shaft, means whereby when either of said members rocks about the axis of sai-d shaft it will cause the other member to simultaneously rock with it, a `bolt adapted to engage a strike, bolt releasing means including a releasing tongue, said locking member having an elongated slot receiving said releasing tongue, said actuating member having a slot substantially aligned with said locking member slot and receiving said releasing tongue, one wall which defines said actuating member slot being adapted to engage said tongue so that when the locking member is in unlocked position and the actuating member is moved along the `axis of said shaft the actuating member will move said releasing tongue to bolt releasing position, outside means adapted to move said actuating member to bolt releasing position, said releasing tongue being out of the path of the Wall of the slot in the actuating member when the locking member is in looked position and the actuating member is moved along the axis of the shaft, and an inside bolt release member pivoted on one of said base anges, tongue and slot means connecting said inside release member and said bolt releasing means and being adapted to rock the release means to free the bolt, said inside bolt release member having a. cam tongue thereon, said actuating member having a cam tongue thereon disposed `when the parts are in locked position in the path of movement of said inside release member cam tongue, said cam tongues being adapted to move the locking member to unlocked position when said bolt releasing means is moved to bolt releasing position while the locking member is in locked position, said actuating cam tongue being out of the path of movement of the inside release member cam tongue when the bolt release means is moved to bolt releasing position while the actuating member is in bolt releasing position.
11. Lock as claimed in claim 1 wherein said bolt includes a gear for engaging a strike and a ratchet for engaging a dog to hold the bolt in strike engaging posmon.
