This invention relates to a locking latch.
The general object of the invention is to provide an improved vehicle door latch including novel lock means for controlling operation of the latch on a door of an automotive vehicle.
Another object of the invention is to provide door latching means including novel lock means which is operable in a novel manner to unlock the latch.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel door latch handle assembly.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel combined key-controlled and dial actuated tumbler controlled lock assembly.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel push button operated latch release member and latch lock.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel combined key and keyless actuated locking member.
A further object of the invention is to provide a latch locking means wherein a handle having a push button actuated release member is employed and wherein a dial actuated tumbler unlocking member and a key operated unlocking device mounted coaxial with the dial and mounted remote from the handle control release of the latch bolt.
A further object of the invention is to provide a vehicle door latch handle assembly which carries push button means for operating adoor latch to released position and wherein a plurality of means carried on the body pillar is operable to render the push button member operative to open the door.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:

Referring to the drawing by reference characters, the invention is shown as embodied in door latches arranged upon doors A of a multidoor vehicle which includes door pillars B.
As shown, each latch includes a base plate In (Fig. 2), having a flange l l thereon, which is provided with a slot I2 through which a bolt l3 protrudes. The bolt I3 is shown as pivotally mounted on the base plate at M and at its outer end supports a. strike engaging roller IS.
The latches in the present disclosure are of the type shown in applicants copending application Serial No. 103,431, filed July '7, 1949, now Patent No. 2,659,230, granted November 17, 1953.
The protruding roller I5 moves in a slot [6 in a strike member I1, arranged upon the car pillar I 8. As fully described in Patent No. 2,659,230, the roller moves from one end of the slot 16 towards the other end to fully engaged position, where it is held in door closed position by a catch member 20 pivotally supported at 2| upon the base l0, and which includes notched portions 22 and 23.
The bolt I3 includes a pin 24 which rests upon the notched portion 22 when the bolt is in the disengaged position. When the bolt is moved to safety latched position, the pin engages the notch .23 and when the bolt is raised to fully engaged position (see Fig. 2), the bolt engages the notched portion 25 just above the notch 23. When so engaged th bolt cannot move downwardly to disengaged position until the catch member 20 is swung about its pivot 2| and is released, as will be hereinafter described. A tongue 25 on the base plate limits movement of the catch member in one direction.
One end of a spring 26, arranged about the pivot pin [4, engages a pin 21 on the catch 20 and urges the catch 20 to bolt holding position while the other end of the spring 26 engages a pin 28 on the bolt [3 to normally urge the bolt downwardly to disengaged position. l
The bolt may be released by means of an inside remote control door handle (not shown) which is connected by a rod 3| to a rock arm 33 which is mounted on the pivot 2|. The lower end of the rock arm engages an actuating pin 34 mounted on alatch releasing member 35. The rock arm will thus move the pin 34 and the pin will move the catch 20, thus permitting the spring 26 to move the latch bolt to disengaged position as the door is opened.
In order to provide means'exterior of the vehicle for releasing the catch members 20 and also to provide means for locking the release means against unwarranted operation, a carriage member 36 is provided for each catch. Each carriage member is pivoted on a pivot 31 on the base I0. One end of the carriage member 36 is raised at 36 and a snap-over spring 35" is arranged between this raised portion 36 and the base Hi to hold the carriage member in either one of its two positions. Tongues 35', struck from the base I0, limit movement of the carriage member 35.
The carriage member 313 includes a projecting end portion 38 which extends through a slot 38 in the flange II. The end of the portion 33 supports a roller 38".
The carriage member is similar in some respects in construction and operation to the carriage member shown in Fig. 32 of the applicants prior Patent No. 2,204,208, granted June 11, 1940.
Guide tongues 39 on the carriage member 3 5 slidably support the latch release member 55 previously mentioned. When the carriage member is in the position shown in Fig. 2 and the release member 35 is moved, the pin 3 5 will engage the tongue 40 on the catch to move the catch. A tongue 4! on the carriage member limits move-- ment of the release member in one direction.
When the carriage member is swung about its pivot 31, the pin 34 will be disposed opposite to a slot in the catch 20 so that when the release member 35 moves to releasing position, the pin 34 will move into the slot 40 without moving the catch member 20. described is fully disclosed and described in the applicants Patent No. 2,659,230, mentioned above.
The carriage member 38 includes an elongated slot 46 which is aligned with a slot n in the base II, and the latch releasing member 35 is also pro vided with a slot 48, aligned with the slots 46 and 41. The slots 46, 41 and 48 receive one end portion of a releasing arm 49, which may be operated from the exterior of the door, as will be described.
The releasing arm 49 is carried by an outside actuator, indicated generally at 50 (see Fig. 3). As shown, the actuator is similar to the handle assembly disclosed in Fig. 24 in the applicants Patent No. 2,450,372, granted September 28, 194,-8. As shown the actuator includes a body 5!, having a hand grip 52 thereon. A screw 52 holds the body Si in place.
The body 51 includes a bore 53 in which a push member 54 is arranged. The push member 5% includes a flanged portion 55, which is normally urged against a shoulder 56 by a spring 57, which also engages a flange 58 on a support 59. The flange 58 has a tight fit in an enlarged bore 53' so that it does not rotate. A guide washer Elli engages the end of the flange 58 and. a split spring 6| holds the parts assembled.
The push member 54 includes holes 63, in which pins 64' on the support 59 are arranged to slide. The pins 64 permit the push member 5A to slide axially relative to the support 59 without turning.
'The support 59 includes depending cars 65, on
which the arm 49, previously described, is pivoted as at 66.
The arm 49 includes a bell crank portion ii which is engaged by a pin 68 on the push member 54 and the construction is such that the arm id is rocked by the push member when the latter moves axially. As stated, the arm l9 extends through the slots 46, i! and 48, the slot ll being of a size so that it is not engaged by the releasing arm 49. The slot 48 is of a size to comfortably receive the releasing arm 49 so that as the push member is pushed inwardly, the arm is rocked, thus moving the latch releasing mem- The latch just :7.

This will cause the pin 34 on the latch releasing member 35 to engage the catch member 20, causing the catch member to be rocked, thus releasing the bolt It so that the latter may be moved downwardly by the spring 26 as the door opens.
This last described action occurs when the locking member is in the unlocked-that is, the position shown in Fig. 2. When the carriage member 35 is moved to the locked position and the releasing arm 49 is rocked to shift the latch releasing member t0, the pin 34 will move into the slot 40' in the catch member 20 and thus there will be no releasing action by movement of the latch releasing member 40.
Full movement of the actuating member 40 by the push button will not move the pin 35 far enough to engage the rear wall of the slot 40' so that no unlocking occurs. However, when the operator 3! is moved it will move the member 33 far enough to shift the pin 34 against the rear wall of the slot 40 and thus rock the member 20 and release the latch.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the latch may be released by operating the push member 54 when the carriage member 36 is in one position and that a similar operation of the pushing member 54, when the carriage member 36 is in the other position, will not serve to open the door. However, the inside release rod 3! may be operated to release the catch member and to free the bolt regardless of which position (locked or unlocked) the carriage member 36 may happen to be in. The slot is is wide enough so that it receives the arm it regardless of whether the carriage member 36 is in locked or unlocked position.
For coincidentally locking all of the locks, the rollers 38" on the carriage members 35 of the adjacent door latches are adapted to move into substantially U-shaped wings (see Fig. 5), mounted at the two ends of a locking bar 8i which has an operating lever 82 connected thereto. The bar 8| includes arms 83 which are pivoted as at 84 to uprights 85 struck from a base 86 of a coincidental lock assembly 86.
The uprights 85 are supported by braces 35 bent up from the base 85. This assembly also includes a vertical portion 81 which is arranged upon the vehicle pillar with the lever 82 accessible from within the vehicle. The portion 8'! supports the lock body 88 of a dial and key operated lock body. The lock 88 includes a projecting cylindrical head member as which has. a crank 95 mounted thereon (see Fig. 3). The crank 90 includes a crank pin 9| which fits in a slot 92 in the locking bar 8!.
The lock is adapted to be operated, by means of a suitable key or by correctly positioning the tumblers (to be described), from a neutral position in either direction. This turning of the lock moves the crank 90 from an upper position to a lower position, and vice versa, and in so doing the pin 9!, moving in the slot 92 in the locking bar 8|, raises and lowers the bars BI and thus raises and lowersthe wings 80.
The lever 82 on one side of the vehicle is connected by a Bowden wire 93 with a similar lever 32 on the other side of the Vehicle, with the Bowden wire preferably passing beneath the vehicle body. The Bowden wires are so connected to the levers that when the lever on one side is depressed or raised the lever on the other side of the vehicle will be also depressed or raised.
88 in either up or down Thecoincidental lock assembly may be suitably secured on the vehicle body in a position wherein the wings 88 are disposed to receive the associated roller 38" when each door is closed. A snap-over spring 95 holds the bar 8| and wings position after they have been moved to such position. Stops 98 limit movement of the bar 8|.
When two adjacent doors are closed and the rollers 38" are in their respective wings 88 with the locking bar 8| in the position shown in Fig. 2, the locking members 36 will be in a position to cause the associated latches tobe unlocked. When, under this condition, the lock 88 is moved to locked position, that is, the lock is moved so thatthe pin 9| is lowered and the locking bar 8| is moved downwardly, the wings 88 will move downwardly and thus will move the associated rollers 38" and will move the associated carriage members 36 downwardly so that the latter will be in locked position.
The slot 92 is of a shape to permit the pin 9| to move up and down therein. When the pin 9| is in a normal position and the wings are in locked position the pin will be adjacent to the lower face of the slot 92. Now when the lock is moved the pin 9| will move downwardly and since the ,pin engages the lower wall of the slot 92 in the bar 8| the pin will push down and will move the bar 8| down to the locked position. When the wings 88 are in the reverse position the pin will be adjacent to the upper edge of the slot, and when the pin is moved upwardly the bar 8| will be raised to unlocked position. Thus the bar 8| may be moved by the pin 8| while still allowing the wings 88 to be moved to locked and to un-. locked position by the lever 82 independent of the position of the pin 9|.
As the wings 88 move about the pivot 84 from locked to unlocked position, there is a slight forward and backward movement of the wings relative to the face 81. The wing support, however, is slightly flexible and loosely fitted together so that this slight movement of the wings 88 does not cause a binding action due to the rollers 38" pressing against the wings.
When any key of a lock 88 is turned from locked to unlocked position or vice versa, the releasing arm will be rocked and will be swung upwardly or downwardly. The pin 9| must be in normal intermediate position when the key is removed and when in this position the releasing arm 49 will fit in the slot 48 as shown in Fig. 2
when the device is unlocked. The slot 48 is shaped to permit the releasing arm to fit therein in reverse position when the latch is locked.
Within the lock body 88 I arrange a dial member I88 which has a finger engaging head portion thereon. The dial member includesa tubular body I8I which rotates in a bore I82 in the lock body 88. The lock body is open at its inner end to receive a closure I83. The closure includes an outer flange I84 which is rotatable within the lock body 88 and an inner flange I85 within which the inner end of the tubular dial body I8I may rotate.
The dial body I8I includes an integral tumbler I88 and supports a pair of other tumblers I81 and I88. The tumblers are provided with the usual pins I89 and the construction is such that by rotating the dial I 88 the tumblers may be correctly positioned to align peripheral grooves III] of which there is one in each tumbler.
The peripheral grooves, when the dials arecor rectly positioned, are disposed opposite an arm II I, pivoted at H2 to the closure I83. A spring |I3 normally urges the arm inwardly in Fig. 3. The arm normally engages the outer face of the tumblers so that a radial pin II4 on the arm which extends through a slot I I4 in the flange I84 remains in a slot H5 in the lock body 88. This pin I I4 thus locks the closure I83 to the lock body to prevent rotation of the closure.
When the grooves I|8 are aligned the spring I I3 will move the arm II I into these grooves, thus withdrawing the pin II4 from the slot II5. Since the tumbler I88 is integral with the dial I88 and since the arm I I I is moved by the spring |I3 into all the grooves IID, it will. be seen that all the tumblers are thereby keyed together and when the dial is turned the closure I83 will also be turned. A split ring. I I6 normally holds the closure in place and allows rotation thereof.
The closure I83 supports a sleeve I28 which has ears I2I passing through slots I22 in the closure.
The sleeve I28 slidably receives a lock barrel I 24, which has anehd I25 which extends through a hole I26 in the dial head I88. Ribs I 21 within the sleeve engage in slots I21 in the barrel I24 to prevent rotation of the barrel I24. The details of the lock form no part of the present invention as such locks are common and in well known use.
The construction is such that when a key I28 is inserted in the lock and rotated, suitable pins (not shown) will be aligned, permitting the key I28 to turn relative to the lock barrel I24 through 90' degrees in either direction from a normal position. The turning of the key rotates the head member 89 previously mentioned to move the carriage members 36 to locked or unlocked position.
Shoulders I 38 and I3| on the barrel I24 and sleeve I28 limit outer movement of the lock barrel. A spring I32 normally urges the lock barrel outwardly.
When the tumblers have been correctly posi tioned and the arm III has been moved into the grooves II8, rotation of the dial member I88 will rotate the dial, tumblers, arm III and closure I83, thus rotating the crank 88 to unlock or lock the door. After the unlocking or locking is performed the dial I88 may be slightly rotated in the same direction until the crank pin 9| is arrested by moving the locking bar 8| to its limit of movement. After this is done an increase of pressure on the dial I88 will, due to the cam shape I33 of the grooves I8 and the corresponding cam shape of the arm I I I, cause the arm to be cammed out of the grooves so that the pin 4 will enter into the slot I I5 and will free the dial tumblers to jumble the latter.
The force required to turn the dial to unlock the latches is not suificient to cam the arm ||I from the grooves H8. A deliberate movement after the bar 8| has moved to unlocked or locked position is required to release the arm III and jumble the tumblers.
In Figs. 6, 7 and 8, wherein a modification of the present invention is illustrated, parts like those described above are indicated by similar single primed reference numerals.
In this modification the lock barrel I48 :is shown as being remote from the dial and tumblers. The lock barrel I48 includes a projecting cylinder member I4I similar to the before mentioned member 88 which supports a crank member I42 and a pin I43which isadapted tooperate in a slot 92 in the locking bar 8 I The dial body, indicated generally at I44, in-
7 eludes a bore which receives a closure I03. The closure has an outer flange I04 and an inner flange I05. Within the body I44 I arrange a dial member I which has an end which protrudes through an opening I02 in the body I44. The dial member is rotatable within th flange I. The dial member I00 carries integral tumbler I06 and supports a pair of other tumblers I01 and I08. The tumblers include pins I09. Peripheral grooves H0 in the tumblers, when correctly positioned, are adapted to be aligned with an arm I I I and the construction and operation of the tumblers and arm III is similar to that previously described.
The closure I03 supports a cylindrical head member I44 which may be secured to the closure I03 as by a nut I45. The member Hi4 supports a crank member I46, the outer end of which is pivotally connected to an arm M1. The arm I4"! extends upwardly and is pivotally connected to the crank member I42 as at M8. The crank member I42 is similar in construction and function to the crank member 90 previously described.
Thus it may be seen that codification and operation of the dial member I00 and simultaneous operation of a key I50 in the lock barrel M0 will rock the locking bar 8 I to actuate the door latch to unlocked position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a door latch which includes a bolt movable to engaged and released positions, means to hold the bolt in engaged position, means to release the bolt, and locking means for the release means, a chambered body, a dial member rotatable on said body and having tumblers thereon,
a rotatable closure on said body, each tumbler having a notch in its periphery, an arm movably mounted on said closure and disposed to enter said notches when the tumblers are correctly positioned, clutch means operative to normally prevent rotation of the closure relative to the body, a head member mounted to rotate with the closure, said. head member having an actuating member thereon adapted to engage and shift the locking member, and means to move the arm and free the clutch means from the body so that the closure and head member may be rotated when the dial tumblers are correctly positioned.
2. In an automotive vehicle door latch construction, a bolt movable on the door to engaged and released positions, a push button member on the door operable to release the bolt, locking means for the bolt, and coaxial key operated lock means and permutation tumbler operated lock means each operable to free the bolt locking means so that actuation of the push button will release the bolt.
3. In a vehicle door latch which includes a bolt and a locking member for the bolt, a fixed support, a lock body rotatable on the support, means including a pivoted arm to normally hold the lock body against rotation relative to the support, a head member mounted in the lock body, key released means normally preventing relative rotation between the head member and lock body, tumbler controlled means operable to rock the pivoted arm and free the holding means to permit rotation of the head member and lock body as a unit, and a lock actuating member carried by the head member and movable when the head member is rotated and adapted to move the locking member to unlocked position.
i. In a door latch which includes a bolt and a locking member for the bolt, a body having a chamber therein, a dial body rotatable in said chamber and having rotatable tumblers thereon, a rotatable closure for said chamber, each tumbler having a notch in its periphery, an arm movably mounted on said closure and disposed to enter said notches when the tumblers are correctly positioned, means carried by said arm and operative to normally prevent rotation of the closure relative to the body, a lock barrel mounted against rotation upon said closure, a head member rotatable in said lock barrel, key released means normally preventing rotation of said head member in said lock barrel, said head member having an actuating member thereon and adapted to engage and shift the locking member, and means to move the arm and free the preventing means and permit rotation of the closure and lock barrel as a unit when the dial tumblers are correctly positioned.
5. In a door latch which includes a bolt and a locking member for the bolt, a body, a dial member rotatable on said body and having rotatable tumblers thereon, a closure rotatable on said body, each tumbler having a notch in its periphery, clutch means operative to normally prevent rotation or the closure relative to the body, a lock barrel fixed against rotation on said closure, 2. head member rotatable on said lock barrel, key released means normally preventing rotation of said head member in said lock barrel, said head member having an actuating member thereon adapted to engage and shift the locking member, and means to free the clutch means from the body and permit rotation of the closure and lock barrel as a unit when the dial tumblers are correctly positioned.
6. In a door latch which includes a bolt and a locking member for the bolt, a body having a chamber therein, a dial body rotatable in said chamber and having tumblers thereon, a rotatable closure for said chamber, each tumbler having a notch in its periphery, clutch means including a part disposed to enter said notches when the tumblers are correctly positioned and operative to normally prevent rotation of the closure relative to the lock body, a sleeve fixed to the closure, a lock barrel fixed against rotation in said sleeve, a head member rotatable in said lock barrel, key released means normally preventing rotation of said head member in said lock barrel, said head member having an actuating member thereon extending through said closure and adapted to engage the locking member, and means to free the clutch means and permit rotation of the closure, sleeve, lock barrel and head member as a unit when the dial tumblers are correctly positioned.
7. In a door latch which includes a bolt and a locking member for the bolt, a lock body having a chamber therein, a dial body rotatable in said chamber, tumblers rotatable on said dial body, means whereby the dial body rotates the tumblers, a rotatable closure for said chamber, each tumbler having a notch in its periphery, an arm movably mounted on said closure and disposed to enter said notches when the tumblers are correctly positioned, a sleeve fixed to the closure and arranged within the dial body, means carried by said arm to normally prevent rotation of the closure relative to the lock body, a lock barrel fixed against rotation in said sleeve, a head member rotatable in said lock barrel, key released means normally preventing rotation of said head member in said lock barrel, said head member having an actuating member thereon extending through said closure and adapted to engage and shift the locking member, and means to move the arm and free the preventing means from the lock body and permit rotation of the closure, sleeve, lock barrel and head member as a unit when the dial tumblers are correctly positioned.
8. In a door latch which includes a bolt and a locking member for thebolt, a lock body having achamber therein, a cylindrical dial body rotatable in said chamber, said dial body includingan operating head, tumblers rotatable on said dial body, means whereby the dial body rotates the tumblers, a rotatable closure for said chamber, each tumbler having a notch in its periphery,
an arm movably mounted on said closure and.
disposed to enter said notches when the tumblers are correctly positioned, a sleeve fixed to the closure and arranged within the dial body, means carried by said arm and engaging the lock body to prevent rotation of the closure relative to the lock body, a lock barrel fixed against rotation in said sleeve, a head member rotatable in said lock barrel, means normally preventing rotation of said head member in said lock barrel, key released means normally preventing rotationof said head member in the lock barrel while the barrel remains stationary, said head member having an actuating member thereon extending through said closure and adapted to engage and shift the locking member, and means to move the arm and free the preventing means from the lock body and permit rotation of the closure and lock barrel as a unit when the dial tumblers are correctly positioned.
9. In a door latch which includes a bolt and a locking member for the bolt, a lock body having a chamber therein and having a bore communicating with the chamber, a cylindrical dial body rotatable in said bore, a dial head carried by said dial body, tumblers rotatable on said dial body, means whereby the dial body rotates the tumblers, a rotatable closure for said chamber, each tumbler having a notch in its periphery, an arm pivotally mounted on said closure and disposed to enter said notches when the tumblers are correctly positioned, said dial head projecting beyond the bore for engagement with the fingers of an operator to permit rotation of said dial body, a sleeve fixed to the closure and arranged within said dial body, means carried by the arm to normally prevent rotation of the closure relative to the lock body, a lock barrel fixed within said sleeve against rotation, said dial head having a bore therein, said lock barrel including an end portion extending through said dial head bore, a head member rotatable in said lock barrel, key released means normally preventing rotation of said head member in the lock barrel, said head member having an actuating member thereon extending through said closure and adapted to engage and shift the locking member, and means to move the arm into the notches and free the preventing means and permit rotation of the closure, sleeve, lock barrel and actuating member as a unit when the dial tumblers are correctly positioned. In a door latch which includes a bolt and a locking member for the bolt, a lock body having a chamber therein and having a bore communicating with the chamber, a cylindrical dial body rotatable in said bore, a dial head carried by said dial body, tumblers rotatable on said dial body, means whereby the dial body rotates the tumblers, a rotatable closure for said chamber, each tumbler having a notch in its periphery, an
arm movably mounted on said closure and disposed to enter said notches when the tumblers are correctly positioned, said dial body projecting beyond the bore for engagement with the fingers of an operator to permit rotation of said dial body, a sleeve fixed to the closure and arranged within the dial body, means carried by the arm and engaging the lock body to prevent rotation of the closure relative to the lock body, a lock barrel fixed against rotation in said sleeve, said dial head having a bore therein, said lock barrel including an end portion extending through said dial head bore, a head member rotatable in said lock barrel, key released means normally preventing rotation of said lock barrel head member in the lock barrel, said lock barrel head member having an actuating member thereon extending through said closure and adapted to engage the locking member, and means to' move the arm and. free the preventing means and permit rotation of the closure, sleeve, lock barrel and actuating member as a unit when the dial tumblers are correctly positioned.
11. In a door latch which includes a bolt and a locking member for the bolt, a lock body having a chamber therein and having a bore communicating with the chamber, a cylindrical dial body rotatable in said bore, a dial head carried by said dial body, tumblers rotatable on said dial bodyfmeans whereby the dial body rotates the tumblers, a rotatable closure for said chamber, each tumbler having a notch in its periphery, an arm pivotally mounted on said closure and disposed to enter said notches when the tumblers are correctly positioned, means normally urging the arm towards the tumblers, said dial head projectlng beyond the bore for engagement with the fingers of an operator to permit rotation of said dial body, a sleeve fixed to the closure and arranged within said dial body, preventing means carried by said arm to normally prevent rotation of the closure relative to the lock body, a lock barrel slidable within said sleeve, said dial head having a bore therein,said lock barrel including an end portion extending through said dial bore, a head member rotatable in said lock barrel, said head member having an actuating member thereon extending through said closure and adapted to engage the locking member, and means to move the arm and free the preventing means and permit rotation of the closure, sleeve, lock barrel and actuating member as a unit when the dial tumblers are correctly positioned.
12. In a vehicle door latching system, a plurality or doors, a latch for each door, each latch including a bolt movable to engaged and released positions, means to hold the bolt in engaged position, an outside actuator for the bolt, a shiftable carriage member, a release member movably engaging the carriage member, the release member being operable by the outside actuator to shift the bolt holding means to a position to release the bolt, the carriage member being movable to either of two positions, the release member being movable with the carriage member from a locked to unlocked position and vice versa to render the outside actuator operative or inoperative to move the release member to free the bolt, means connecting the several latches for coincidental movement of the carriage members and the release members to unlocked or locked position, a key actuated lock means operable to move the several carriage members and the release members from locked to unlocked positions,
and keyless, combination, dial controlled lock means operable to move the several carriage members and the release members from locked to unlocked positions.
13. In a vehicle latchin system, a plurality of doors, a latch for each door, each latch including a bolt movable to engaged and released positions, means to hold the bolt in engaged position, an outside actuator for the bolt, a shiftable carriage member, a release member movably engaging the carriage member, the release member being operable by the outside actuator to shift the bolt holding means to a position to release the bolt, the carriage member being shiftable to either of two positions, the release member being movable with the carriage member from a locked to an unlocked position and vice versa to render the associated outside actuator operative or inoperative to move the release member to free the bolt, means connecting the several door latches for coincidental movement of the carriage members and the release members to locked or un-' locked position, and a keyless, combination, dial controlled lock means operable to move the carriage members and release members on the several doors from locked to unlocked positions, restoring means operable when the carriage members and the release members of the several latches are in locked position and a door is closed to shift the carriage members and the release members to the unlocked position, and manually operated means effective when the carriage members and the release members are in locked position and a door is closed to render the restoring means ineffective to restore the carriage members and the release members to unlocked position.

In a vehicle door latching system, a plurality of doors, a latch for each door, each latch including a bolt movable to engaged and released positions, means to hold the bolt in engaged position, an outside actuator for the bolt, a shiftable carriage member, a release member movably engaging the carriage member, the release member being operable by the outsid actuator to shift the bolt holding means to a position to release the bolt, the carriage member being shiftable to either of two positions, the release member being movable with the carriage member from a locked to an unlocked position and vice versa to render the associated outside actuator operative or inoperative to move the release member to free the bolt, means connecting the several door latches for coincidental movement of the carriage members and release members to locked or unlocked position, a key operated lock means operable to move the carriage members and release members in the several latches from locked to unlocked position, and a keyless, combination, dia1 controlled lock means operable to move the carriage members and release members on the several doors from locked to unlocked positions, restoring means operable when the carriage members and the release members of the several latches are in locked position and a door is closed to shift the carriage members and the release members to the unlocked position, and manually operated means eifective when the carriage members and the release members are in locked position and a door is closed to render the restoring means ineffective to restore the carriage members and the release members to unlocked position.
15. A vehicle door latching system as defined in claim 12, wherein the key actuated lock means and the keyless, dial controlled lock means are coaxially arranged.
16. A vehicle door latchin system as defined in claim 12, wherein the key actuated lock means and the keyless, dia1 controlled lock means are spaced apart.
17. In a vehicle door latching system, a plurality of doors, a latch for each door, each latch including a bolt movable to engaged and released positions, means to hold the bolt in engaged position, an outside actuator for the bolt, a release member operable by the outside actuator to shift the bolt holding means to a position to release the bolt, means to mount the release member for movement from a locked to unlocked position and vice versa to render the outside actuator operative 0r inoperative to move the release member to free the bolt, means connecting the several latches for coincidental movement of the release members to unlocked or locked position, and keyless, combination, dial controlled lock means operable to move the several release members from locked to unlocked positions.
18. In a latch for a vehicle door, said latch including a bolt movable to engaged and released positions, means to hold the bolt in engaged position, an outside actuator for the bolt, a shiftable carriage member, a release member movably engaging the carriage member, the release member being operable by the outside actuator to shift the bolt holding means to a position to release the bolt, the carriage member being shiftable to either of two positions, the release member being movable with the carriage member from a locked to an unlocked position and vice versa to render the associated outside actuator operative or inoperative to move the release member to free the bolt, and a keyless, combination, dial controlled lock means operable to move the carriage member and release member from locked to unlocked positions, restoring means operable When the carriage member and the release member are in locked position and the door is closed to shift the carriage member and the release member to the unlocked position, and manually operated means eifective when the carriage member and the release member are in locked position and the door is closed to render the restoring means ineifective to restore the carriage member and the release member to unlocked position.
