T all whomz't may concern Be it known that I, BERNARD MoRGnN' THAU, a citizen of the. United. States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York andState of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looks, of which the following is a specification. The present inventionrelates to locks, and has for its main object to provide one with a sliding and rotary locking bolt that'is actuatedby a rotary element, said element being adapted to be operated from the outside by means of a key. and from the inside by a knob, the arrangement being such that the said rotary element may be disconnected from the key-actuated mechanism, so that the, door cannot be opened from the outside.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lock of the character mentioned which 7 is simple inconstruction, efficient in operation, and wh ch 1t;1s practicallyimpossible to pick either by skeleton or false keys or by sharp-pointed instruments A still further objectof the invention isto provide a lock of. the character mentioned which is adapted for manufacture on a com mercial scale, or in other words one which is not so difiicult to make as to be beyond the reasonable cost of such a device.
Withlthese and other objects in view, which will more fully appear as the nature of the invention .is better understood, the same consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that many changes may be made in the size and proportion of the several parts and CletililSojlhCOllstruction within the scope of the appended .claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invent-ion. 7 One of the many possible emboiflint ents of the invention is illustrated in; the accompanying drawings in which Figure]. is aufront elevation ofa lockconstructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 represents a front elevation of the lock, partly in section, with the face plate removed to show its interior mechanism; and Fig. 4; is a sectlon taken through a detail of construction. t
In the drawings, the numeral indicates a lock casing, mounted in any suitable manner upon the inner face of the door 11 said lock casing being in alignment with a keeper 12 on the jamb 18. The lock casing is pro vided in'its end plate 14 with a screw-threadedopening 15, said openingbeing in regis tering position with. a screw-threaded cylindric'al recess 16 in the keeper. lVith these two sets of threads are adapted to mesh the threads 17 of a cylindrical locking bolt 18, the latter being slidable in the direction of its longitudinal axis upon an arbor 19, that extends into the hollow hub 20 of a bevel gear '21. The arbor is attached to the said hub by any suitable means, for instance by a pin 22,
passing through these two elements. The
hub of the bevel gear is rotatably mounted inabearing 23, the latter being either made integralwithor attached to the back plate 24 of the lock casing. In order to transmit the rotation of the bevel gear 21 to theslidingbo-lt 18,;any suitable neans may be provided, for instance the arbor 19 may be made of polygonal cross-section, in the case illus trated in the drawings of square. cross-section', and fit into alongitudinal bore 25 of e square cross-sectioninthe bolt 18. This bore is ofa length to permit of a-sliding motion of the said, bolt on the said arbor.
The bevel gear 21 meshes with a similar g'ear'26, thatis rotatably mountedupon a sleeve 27, the latter being rotatably mounted in the baoleplate 24:.and held against longit-udinal movement thereon. The cylindrical hub 28 of the bevel gear 26 extends beyond the sleeve 27, it being provided in its free with a slot 30 in the free end of the sleeve :27. These two slots extend to the same plane in thesleeve 27 and bevel gear26, as clearly Into slots mentioned. This spindle is rotatably a lmob 34:. The spindle is shiftable iii-the direction. of its longitudinal axis [upon said face plate,- and has interposed between the said face plate and anjenlargement35 on the end with a slot 29, that is adapted. to register appears from Fig. 4 oftho drawings, for a purpose hereinafter to be described. the sleeve 27 extends a spindle 31, carrying a pin .32, that is adapted to enter the two Qmoimted in the face] plate-33 of the block casing and carriesouts deof the said casing Upon the outer face of the face plate 33 is shiftably disposed a catch 37, which maybe interposed between the knob 34 and the face plate 33, to hold the spindle-3l in its outer:

This plug-and cylinder form part-of a so-called cylinder lock, a detailed description of which is not necessary as it. is well-known and does not form part of the present inven tion. The key is insertable; into'the key" plug from the outside,'t -heplug being fixed, that is to say non-rotatable, in case the key is withdrawn therefrom, as usual in constructions ih yp i i The operation of thisdevice is as follows In the positions shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of thedrawin s, thelocking bolt 18 is shown in its' projected position, and the catch 37 disengaged from the knob 34. Inthese p'ositions,the pin 32 is seated in the registering slots in the sle'eveQT and bevel gear 26'.- The door is unlocked from the outside by inserting a key into the plug 41 and turningthe latter in the required direction, the rotation of the plug being transmitted bytheprojection 39" to'the'sleeVeQ'T and by the intermediary of the pin 32 to the bevel gear 26. 'llhisgeanin turn, rotates the gear 21 and the arbor 19 fixed thereto, with the result that the locking bolt is' turned and shifted longitudinally upon the said arbor toward the bearing'23. The rotating and shifting movement of'the bolt unnie'shes the threads of the latter from the threads in the keeper keeper 12. It is to be observed that, when the atc1i 37fis interposed between the knob 34 and the face plate of the lock,;the door cannot be'unlocked from the outside, inasmuch as there is no driving, onnection be 7 tween the sleeve '2 7 and the bevel gearf26,
What I claim is:-

In a lock, the combination-with. a casing, of a longitudinally shiftable and rotatable locking-bolt therein the outer end of said bolt being screw-threaded and adapted to be projected through said casing forengagement with a screw-threaded keeper, a rotatable arbor on which said locking-bolt is longitudinally shiftable connected with saidbolt to transmit its rotation to the latter, v a gearing operatively connected with said arbor, manually operated means for actuating said gearing, and key operated means for actuating said gearing, said manually operated means and said key operated means including a common element adapted to be disconnected from said key operated means without disrupting the connection between said manually operated means and said gearing.
