Abstract

637,073. Locks. WILLIAMS, E. D. May 27, 1948, No. 14370. [Class 44'] In a door latch of the kind in which the outside handle is rendered inoperative by operation of a key lock, the handle 3 has a stem 14 surrounded at the inside end by a sleeve 12, connected to the latch mechanism, to which it is coupled or uncoupled by a lever 142 mounted in a slot in the stem and controlled by a barrel lock 17 in the handle boss. The lever has a curved portion about which it rocks and a locating peg 143. A spring 147 urging the tooth 146 of the lever into engagement with a socket in the sleeve 12 also acts on a ball 148 which, engaging in an opening. 122, locates the handle'in the coupling position relative to the sleeve. The lever is controlled by a cam 172 carried on the inside member of the barrel lock 17. The barrel lock has two sets of pin tumblers at right angles so that the key may be withdrawn in the locked or unlocked position. A projection 177 inside the outer cylinder of the lock limits the rotation of the inner barrel and also co-operates with a notch in the back of the key as a further safety provision. The sleeve is axially located by deformable portions which are made to engage in a circumferential slot 15 in the stem 14 and by a flange 13 abutting the escutcheon plate 11.
