1 Claim.
The invention relates to a lock and more especially to key operated combination locks.
The primary object of the invention is the A further object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character, wherein the barrel of the same accommodates tumblers which are key controlled for locking the barrel to the while supplementing these tumblers is a combination mechanism which also releasably locks the barrel to the cylinder, therefore, in one instance the latching bolt of the lock can be so that the lock is of a dual operative kind, name- 1y, a key operated lock for the release of the bolt or a combination key operated lock for the release of the bolt or these cooperating together for the release of the bolt.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character, wherein both ated and thus for the successful working of the lock, it is necessary that a person have knowledge of the particular combination set of the lock provision of a lock of this character, which is comparatively simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and eificient in operation, readily applied to doors or other parts to be locked, strong, durable, and inexpensive tomanufac- 5 ture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
'gure 1 is an elevation of the lock constructed 15 in accordance with the invention showing the key therefor inserted for the operation of the lock.
Figure 2 is an enlarged plan view partly in section of the lock, the key being inserted in 20 the lock.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view through the lock showing the cylinder and other adjuncts in elevation.
Figure 4 is an enlarged vertical longitudinal 25 sectional view through the lock.
Figure 5 is a sectional View on the line 5-5 of Figure 4 looking in the direction of the arrows.
spending parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
type having a spring thrown latching or looking bolt H engageable with a keeper frame. Formed transversely in the prop l2 on the door the door A at to the latched outer side of the door A a circular dial l6 provided with exposed numerals ranging from one a circular course and in association 5."
' which has en a ed with degree marks II effecting a combination scale. The cylinder I4 at the inner side of the dial I6 is suitably notched at I8 for accommodating cleats I9 engaged by fasteners 20 and these cleats secure the cylinder I4 in place and hold the same stationary while the dial overhangs a concavo-convexed facing collar 2| which encircles the cylinder I4 for service as a frontal fitting to the door A about the cylinder, the cleats I9 being concealed by the said collar 2| when in place. I
The turning barrel I as is usual is formed with 22 for a tumbler releasing key 23. The tumblers 24 within the barrel 25 to locking position with the cylinder I4 in. gliametrically opposed slots 26 in said cylinder and in this manner the barrel I53is1-lockedagainst turning movement in the cylinder I4, the turning movement of the said barrel I5 being effected by the key. 23 when inserted in the way .22 for the release of the tumblers 24 in said barrel from the cylinder I4.
The key 23 in this instance has a circular head or finger grip 2|- to which is pivoted eccentrically thereto a swinging pointer or indicator arm 28 which when .swung away from the head toward the dial I6 will coact with the numerals exposed by said dial and 'the degree marks I1 for a combination setting of the lock in the latching and unlatching of the bolt 'II with and'from the keeper I2.
Formed with the barrel I15 centrally thereof at its inner end is .a journal arbor or spindle 29 therein a cross or transversely disposed fastener .30 iora cam ring 3| encircling theuarbor or spindle 29 for the fixing of;
this ring thereto while encircling the said arbor or spindle 29 at opposite sides of the ring .3I are the combination rings 32land 33, respectively,
" these at their sides next to the ring 3l| being formed with mutilated or broken annular grooves or channels 34, one being of greater extent than the other and received therein is an actuator pin 35fiXed vin the ring 3| concentrically thereof.
" The rings 32 and 33 varefiree of the arbor or spindle 29 of the barrel I5 and are'frictionally held through the medium of locpsprings 36 interposed between the said ring3| and the rings 32 and.,.33, respectively, and in this manner such pr ngs 36 will efiect a braking action on the rings.32 and 33 to avoid the rotatingof the same on the rotation of the barrel l5 and its arbor or spindle .29. These rings 3| :32, and 133 when concentrically :of the arbor or spindle 29 are snugly I4 and the said rings fitted within the cylinder 32 and 33 are formed with notches 31-;adapted for register with a receded cam notch 38 in the ring 3| which notch 38 provides a cam surface 39 :on the said ring .3I for :a purpose presently described.
'Accommodated in the inner open ends!) of the cylinder I4 is a turn table 4| formed with a guide way.42 transversely thereof at its inner face for accommodating a radially shiftable locking slide 43 having a locking finger 44 movable into and out ofthe notches31 and 3.8, respectively, of the rings 3|, 32, .and 33 when these notches 3,1 and 38 are in register with each other and such 1 finger when moved outwardly of the said notches through the action of the cam face 39 thereon is accommodated within a keeper slot 45 formed longitudinally in the cylinder 14 atone side thereof. .fThe locking slide 43 is acted upon byaspring 75 wh ch 15 .15 fi e 44 into the notches 31 I5 each is thrown by a spring v48. has a central swiveled lug 50 engaged in the a central longitudinally disposed key slot or way a bor or spindle 29 so that the barrel l5 will be 'centered in the cylinder I4 and swiveled therewith.
The turn table has centrally thereof at its outer side a tubular hub 5| having loosely fitted therein ;a partially rotatable coupling plug 52 in which is pivoted at 53 a turning key bar 54 which is engaged in a throw eccentric 55 for the latch bolt II in the casing III. This plug52is fitted within the hub 5| for partial rotation therein b set screws 56 mounted insaid huband projecting into a mutilated annular groove 5'! provided peripherally in'the saidplug .52. plug can turn independently of the hub 5| for a limited distance and when at the limit of movement the set screws 56 operate to have the plug 52 turn with the turn table 4| This limited independent movement of the plug 52 within thehubv 5| permits of the release of the vlatch bolt II through a hand turn knob 58 fitted with the casing I5 and also the latching of the bolt through spring action interiorly of said casing as is usual. a
The rings 32 1and33 with the notches 31 therein are set-through the extent of the channels or grooves 34 in. cooperation with the p-in 35 in accordance with a certain determined combination 1 identified by the numerals ranging from one to twelve on the dial I5 and the degree markings I'I thereon. When the barrel I5 has been unlocked from the cylinder I4 by the key 23 acting upon the tumblers 24 and turned to an extent both clockwise and counter-clockwise by the key 23 in the way'22 in conformity to the location of the numerals one to twelve and the degree marks II selected for a particular combination operation of the lock thereunder throws the latch bolt II and the unlocking of the door or other part A is had. Under this selected combination of the lock, it is, of course, understood that normally the finger .44 ,is engaged in the slot 45 in the cylinder I4 and thus the turn table 4| is held fixed against turning action so that the latching bolt II can notbe thrown to a released position. This throwing of the latch bolt II requires the turning of the barrel I5 to bring the rings 3|, .32, and 33 into a position that the notches 31 and 38 therein will be in'register with each other whereupon the finger 44 can ,move from engagement in the slot 45 in the cylinder I4 into engagement in the said registering notches 31 and 38 with theresult that the turn table 4| can now be freely turned for the operation of the latching bolt I I.
If it is desired to release the latching bolt in againstthespring tension thereQn within the casing I0, it is required that the rin s 32 and 33 be held in a position or remain in a position-to have the notches 31 register-withthe notch 38 in' a bridge piece 48- "In this manner the.
when-thekey 23-,is inserted in; the way .22 in the 75.
barrel [5 the tumblers 24 within the barrel will be operated upon to free the said barrel for the turning thereof and by the turning of the same a limited distance the latch bolt I I can be thrown to unlatching position against spring action within the casing l B urging it to latching position.
The indicator or pointer arm 28 on the head 27 of the key 23 when thrown to an operative position for cooperation with the dial IE will enable an operator of the key 23 to turn the barrel l5 and identify the setting of the rings 3|, 32 and 33 according to the selected combination of the lock through observation of the numerals one to twelve and the degree marks I! on the said dial for the working of the lock.
The lock hereinbefore described is susceptible of being operated in three ways, for example, as a key operated spring latch or lock; a combination lock and as both the key operated spring and combination lock together as may be required by the user of such lock.
' What is claimed is:
A lock of the kind described comprising a cylinder for stationary fitting in a part, a turnable barrel fitting said cylinder and having key released tumblers for locking the barrel with said cylinder, a cam ring fixed with the barrel and having an inset cam with respect to its outer periphery and providing a notch in said periphery, peripherally notched rings loosely fitted with the barrel at opposite sides of the cam ring and having variable lengthened annular channels next to said cam ring, means on the cam ring and active in the channels for changing the position of the notched rings for bringing the notches in the latter and said cam ring in alignment with each other, a turn table fitting the cylinder and swiveled with the barrel and having connection with a spring tensioned latch bolt for the throwing of the same counter to the spring tension thereof, and means movably fitted with the turn table for locking engagement with the cylinder and on release therefrom receivable in the notches when aligned with each other and moved by the inset cam of the cam ring to locked position.
