BERNARD MORG-ENTH AU, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LO CK.
:Specificationof Letters Patent. Patented Ria -.28 1922.
Application filed December 16, 1919. Serial No. 345,372.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
{Be it known that I, BER ARD Morena THAU, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, inthe county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in looks, and has for its main object to provide a lock with a locking bolt, having, besides the usual sliding"motion a rotary movement, whereby it becomes practically impossible to pick the lock either by skeleton or false keys or by sharp pointed instruments. 7
Another object of the invention is to provide a lock ofthe character mentioned which is adapted for manufacture'on a commercial scale, or in other words one which is not so diflicult to make as to be beyond the reasonable cost of such a device. u
\Vith these and other objects in view, which will more fully appear as the nature .of the invention is better understood, the same consists in .the combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that many changes may be made in the size and proportion of the several parts and details of construction within the'scope of the appended claims without departing from thespirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
One of the many possible embodiments of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a lock constructed in accordance with the present invention, its face plate being removed in order to show its interior construction and its locking bolt being shown in its retracted position; Fig. 2 is a similar elevation with the bolt in its projected position; Fig. 3
is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 44 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5--5 Fig. 1; and Fig. 6 isan inner view of the face plate of the lock, on a smaller scale.
In the drawings, the numeral 10indicates a lock casing, mounted in any suitable manner upon the inner face of a door 11, said lock casing being in alignment with a keeper 12 on the jamb 13. Within the casing is plate 23 of the casing.
. jection 32 upon a :ed and adapted to turn in a cylinder34. This a stop 36 on the face plate slidably and oscillatably. disposed a lockingbolt 14, having a ts front end and a flat enlargement 1.6 upon its rear end. The bolt extends through a bearing .plate 17 that is preferably made integral with the lock casing, the said bolt be ing guided in its sliding movement by lugs 18, one of these lugs bearing against a ledge 19 upon the backplate 20 and the other lug against a ledge 21 on the face plate 22 .of the said caslng. These two ledges. are dis posed infront of the bearing plate 17 and extend toward but stop short of the end I The purpose of this arrangement Wlll be described hereinafter.
The lugs extend transversely of and are fixed to the bolt V 7 H 3 The transverse head 15 of the bolt is adapted to be projected through vertical slot'24 1n the end plate 23 and through a slot '25 in the keeper 12. These two slots have obviously a'greater length than width,
are 111 alignment with each'other, when the door is closed, and lead to a recess; 26in the keeper, permitting the bolt to be given approximately a quarter of a turn, when the transverse head thereof is disposed within said recess. t I
On the flat enlargement 16 are formed two spaced shoulders, denoted by the numerals 27 and 28, against which adapter'l to'bear a cam 29, the latter being fixed to a spindle 30, which is rotatably mounted in a bearing 31 on theface plate 2 2 of the ca s ing. With the spindle is connected a prokey plug 33, that'is mountplug and cylinder form part of a so-called cylinder look, a detailed description of which is notnecessary as it is well-known and does not form part of the present invention. The key is insertable into the key plug from the outside. Below the shoulder 27 is formed on the enlargement 16 a cam face 35, with which co-acts the cam 29 above referred to, the arrangement being such that the cam 29 causes the bolt 14 to turn and the fiat projection to tilt forward into the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, when the cam 29 turns in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings and acts upon the said cam face. The turning movement of the locking bolt is limited by 22, (Fig. 3). The movement of the cam 29 is limited by a 1 spring 37 in the lock casing, as clearly transverse head 15 upon In order to prevent the bolt from rotating I backwards, that is to say fr'om'the positions shown 111 Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings into the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, there is provided a spring 38, bearing 26 in the keeper and projects partly the slot 25 in the said keeper (Fig. 4.
against one of the lugs 18.
The operation of this device is as follows: In the positions shown in Figs. '2 and 3 of the drawings, the locking bolt is'shown in its projected position, in which its transverse head 15 is disposed within the recess across In these positions, the cam 29 is heldin dotted position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings by the spring 37 The door'is unlocked from the outside by inserting a key into the plug 33 and turning the latter in the required direction so as to rotate the cam clockwise. After this cam has ridden over the cam face 35 on theenlargement 16, it contacts with the flat face of the said enlargement and first causes the bolt to be turned, so as to bring its head in alignment with the slots 25 and 2a in the keeper and lock casing, respectively. A further rotation of the said cam brings the latterinto contact with the shoulder 28 on the enlargement 16, retracting the a said bolt until the elements are brought into the positions shown in Fig. 1 of thedrawings, in which the transverse head 15 of the boltis withdrawn from the keeper and seated in the slot 2 1 in the end plate 23 of the lock casing. The door is thus-adapted to be opened. It is to be observed that, when th locking bolt is retracted from the keeper, the flat projection 26 is disposed parallel to the back plate 20 of the lock casing, the lugs 18, in co-operation withthe ledges 19 and 21, preventing a rotation of the locking bolt, when Withdrawn from the keeper.
p In orderto lock the door with theele- 1. wards and its head cess in the keeper.
ments shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the
cam 29.;is rotated in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings adjacent the same, whereby first it acts on the shoulder 27, causing the bolt to slide for- 15 to be seated in there A continued rotation of the cam 29 in the same direction brings the said cam onto the camface 35, whereby the bolt is givenapproximately a quarter turn, so that itshead 15 is disposed'across the slot 25 in the keeper v(Fig. 4:). It is to be}ob served that arotating motion of the boltcan take place only afterthe lugs 18.,in theforward movement of the bolt, have passed the ledges 19 and 21. The spring 38, bearing against one of the lugs 18 (Fig.2), keeps the bolt in itselocking position, as it prevents a a a turning of the bolt. The cam is then" further rotated until it is stopped by its spring 37 when the key may bewithdrawn.
VVhat I claim is': y
In a door fastening, rthecombination with a lock casing having a slot in one of its end faces, of a recessed keeper provided with a slot in alignment with the slot in said lock casing, a locking bolt slidably and oscillatably disposed within saidlock casing, a head on said locking bolt seated in the slot in said casing, an enlargement upon the inner end of said bolt made integral therewith, said enlargement being provided with two spaced shoulders and a cam face, and a cam rotatably mounted upon said lock casing-coacting withsaid cam face and shoulders, said cam in its rotation shifting longitudinally said bolt when acting on said shoulders and giving said bolt a partial turn when acting on said cam face, togive the bolt a partial turn when said head is disposed within the recess insaid keeper. i
', Si ned at New York, in the county NewIYork and State ofNew York, this 15th day of November, 1919.
