In an automobile the remote inside door handle is usually located where it is readily accessiblefor operation by a youngster. Many accidents have occurred by youngsters operating the remote inside door handle to unlatch and open the vehicle door whilethe vehicle was in motion. Other accidents have occurred by occupants of the car unintentionally striking or actuating the remote inside door handle to retract the bolt It is also an object of this invention to produce a remote inside door handle which, upon being released after retracting the bolt, upon returning, tonormal position automatically locks itself in This invention also contemplates an inside door 1 handle provided with a latch for latching it in normal position. which latch at the option of the operator can be rendered either effective or inefiective to latch the inside door handle.

Referring more particularly to the drawings there is shown an automobile door i provided with a latch comprising a. spring projected latch bolt 2 and-an inside door handle 3 which is connected to the bolt 2 by a. draft link 4. The belt 2 can be retracted by turning the handle 3 counin Fig. 1. I
.The inside door handle 3 takes the form of a lever which is fixed on a spindle 5 which is journaled in the bearing support plate t (which is fixed to the lock board 1) and inthe bearing plate t which is fixed to. the plate 6. A lever 8 is also fixed on the spindle [to turn therewith. The lever B is connected to the draft link 4. The
torsion spring I0 is mounted upon the spindle 5.
One end of the spring is secured to the plate 8 as at I l and the other end engages behind the mg 12 on the lever 8. Thus each time the handle I is turned down (Fig. 1). the lever 9 turns clockwise (Fig. 4) and, acting through draft link I, retracts the bolt. This winds up torsion spring in. When the handle 3 is released, the
, torsion spring returns the handle to its normal position, Fig. 1. when the latch bolt 2 is projected by its spring in .the usual manner, the bolt acts through draft link 4 and lover I to -.-return the handle 3 to normal position.
It is proposed to lock the handle 3 in its normal position so that it cannot be turned to retract the bolt preliminary to opening the door. To this end a-handle blocking device in the form of a detent is used. This detent comprises a plunger ll slidably mounted in the'housing IS and backed up by a coil spring It. The plunger I! is provided with a shoulder l'lwhich, when the plunger is projected,engages beneath the lever handle 3 to block it andprevent turning of.the

end of which slldably engages the housing in the T slot l9 and the other end of, which fits in the recess 2c in the detent H. The pin it is provided with a shoulder 2| and is backed up by a coil spring 22 which yieldably projects the pin it into the T slot is.
As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5, the plunger detent I4 is projected and the handle 3 is locked in its normal position with the latch bolt 2 projected. To withdraw the latch bolt it is first necessary to press the plunger detent It inwardly against the coil spring It so that the Y position.

As the handle swings back to its normal position it automatically retracts and by the plungerdetent H. As soon as the handle passes the shoulder II, the spring It again projects the plunger detent H to lock the handle in its normal position.

I claim:
1. In combination with a movable automobile door handle. a plunger member, a spring for pro- Jecting the same into the path of movement of the handle to block movement of the same, a housing member in which the plunger member is reciprocable and rotatable, a pin carried by one of said members and a T slot in the other of said members, the said pin engaging the stem portion 0! the T slot in the retraction and proiection oi the plunger member and the said pin interengaging one or the other of the cross poreither direction to retain the plunger member it, After being fully retracted within the housing II the detent I4 is then turned either clock- 'wise or counterclockwise a few degrees, as indicated in Figs. 3, 8 and 10.
