[Class 44.] Panic bolt devices comprise two bolts 4, 5 vertically slidable in a casing 1 having a coverplate 1a, a toothed member 7 inside the casing rotated by a knob or handle 9 simultaneously operating both bolts by acting on toothed extensions 4c, 5c thereof, a substantially L- shaped lever 14 pivoted between lugs 14c on the cover-plate 1a, one arm 14a of this lever engaging in an aperture 10a of a toothed segment 10 of which the teeth 10b working in recesses 11 of the extension 4c cause the bolts to be drawn back when the lever 14 is swung inwardly, and a pawl 15 which is pivoted between lugs 15a on'the cover-plate 1a and is adapted to pass through a hole in the lever 14 so as to retain the latter in the inward position by means of a step 15e engaging therewith, so that the lever 14 can be pulled to open the door without shooting the bolts. On turning the handle 9 a cam 16 fixed to the extension 4c of the bolt 4 is caused to operate on an extension 15/ of the pawl 15, so that the step 15e is disengaged with the lever 14 and the bolts can be shot from the outside, a lost motion between the arm 14a of the lever 14 and the edges of the aperture 10a of the segment 10 enabling this to be done. A locking'device may be provided, comprising a lock 17 fitted to the outer side of the door and formed with a barrel 18 having a cam 18a adapted to engage the edge 19a of a tumbler 19, a recess 19b of which receives one end of a spring-loaded finger 20 pivoted between its ends on a pin 21, and adapted to trip under a step 22 on the bolt 4. -
