' LOCK Filed March 1'7, 1936 //7 vemo/c' Patented Dec. 7, 1937 PATENT OFFICE LOCK Edward Robins, Farnham, England Application March 17,1936, Serial No. 69,306 In Great Britain March 19, 1935 1 Claim.
My invention relates to an improved lock for doors, gates and the like of the type actuated by an internal spring and operated by a handle and separate key. The object of this invention is to 5 construct a lock which is easily constructed and assembled, is less in cost of construction and more efficient than that which at present obtains.
Although the following description refers to one form of construction I do not confine myself strictly to that form, it being understood that modifications in the shape of the internal parts are necessary to vary the shape of the key which is to operate it, thus allowing for a variety of shapes, but the general principle of construction remains the same, whatever the shape of the internal parts.
The lock according to my invention comprises a roll back-operated latch bolt adapted to be locked in its shot position by a second key-op- 20 erated member and is characterized in that the locking member, which moves at right angles to the latch bolt, slides on two pins fixed to the casing and that a key-operated tumbler for looking this member is pivoted on one of these pins.
25 So that my invention and its operation may be more readily understood I will describe the construction of same with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the same reference letters denote the same particular in each figure 30 where shown.
Figure 1 is a plan view of thegeneral assembly of the parts of the lock but with one side of the casing removed, the latch bolt being in the unlocked position,
35 Fig. 2 is a section of the lock taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1 without the controlling spring and the roll back,
Fig. 3 is another view like Fig. 1 with the latch bolt and its carrying element removed,
40 Fig. 4 is a View of the carrying element for the latch bolt,
Figs. 5 and 6 are views at right angles to each other of the latch bolt,
Fig. 7 is a view of the locking member, and
45 Fig. 8 is a view ,of the tumbler.
The lock comprises a casing a, fitted with a latch bolt b which is detachably secured to an operating plate provided with studs 12 for cooperation with "a roll back e. The latter is se- 50 cured in known manner to a lock spindle ,f whereby the latch bolt is operated. A slidable locking member g is provided which is guided by means of slots h on two pins 2' and k, and which is moved by the key in a direction at right angles to the movement of the plate 0 and the latch bolt. There is a stud Z on the locking member which in one position of the latter serves as a stop for the plate 0 and prevents the latch bolt from being retracted. In another position of the locking member (the position shown in Fig. 1) the stud Z is in register with a notch m in the plate a and allows the latter to move.
For holding the locking member both in operativeand inoperative position, a tumbler n is provided which is arranged between the plate 0 and the locking member g and which is pivotally mounted on the pin 2'. The locking member has 15 a stud 0 which engages in and moves along a slot p in the tumbler n, and shoulders q in said slot are adapted to engage the stud 0- for holding the locking member in either end position. A spring r controls the tumbler and tends to hold it in operative engagement with the stud o, the tumbler being rocked by the key in opposition to the spring for releasing the locking member. The spring 1* is mounted on a stud s and provided with two arms one of which bears against the tumbler while the other arm. bears against a shoulder t on the plate 0 for controlling the latch bolt.
The latch bolt b is attached to the plate 0 by means of a head it which is slid into engagement with a guideway v in the plate. This arrangement, which'iis'known per se, allows the bolt to be reversed and'thus adapted to either a leftor right-hand look.
I claim:
A lock comprising a casing, a roll back in said casing, a slidable plate in said casing having studs for operative engagement with said roll back, a latch bolt secured to said plate, a key-operated locking member arranged behind the plate and operative-in one position to prevent the plate and 40 bolt from being retracted, pins in the casing whereby said ldckiiigl member is guided atright angles to the movement of the plate, a tumbler arranged between the plate and locking member and pivoted to one of said pins, a stud on the looking member adapted to co-operate with said tumbler for holding the locking member both in operative and inoperative position, a shoulder on the plate, and a spring arranged between said shoulder and tumbler for controlling both the plate and the tumbler.
EDWARD ROBINS.
