A lock mechanism comprises a tubular casing 1, a bolt 2 having a tail portion of reduced diameter inside the tube and a spring 3 which holds the bolt in its extended position and bears against a stop within the tube, the tube having slots on opposite sides for simultaneously guiding corresponding parts of the bolt or parts attached to the bolt. A pin 4 fitted to the bolt 4 and to knobs 5 transmits the to and fro motion and slides in the slots in the tube. The tube 1 is held in position within the door by a bolt 7 of the handle passing through one end of the slots assisted by a further bolt 7. A simple safety catch in the form of a slide 8 prevents movement of the pin 4 and so prevents opening of the door from the other side. A safety catch of the kind shown in Fig. 3 may be used which consists of a pin 11 with half the thickness cut away so that a mere quarter turn allows or prevents movement of the knob 5. The pin 11 is rotated by a fluted wheel 15, inset within the handle (Fig. 4, not shown). Two spring loaded ball catches may be provided to hold the safety catch in the on and off positions. The striker plate used comprises a piece of stamped sheet metal with a central oval recess 21 (Fig. 8, not shown) and a sloped edge 22 to take the impact of the bolt. The recess in the door frame is made slightly larger than the recess in the striker plate and round to allow for small adjustments.
