[Classes 8 (i) and 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX] In a pump or compressor the pistons 2, 2a, Fig. 1, of opposed cylinders are connected by a rectangular frame 4, which is connected to a crank-shaft by means of return connecting- rods. The valve chamber 6 comprises a suction chamber arranged between the cylinders, and a discharge chamber which is disposed laterally.. The cylinders may be double-acting, opposite ends of the cylinders being connected by means of passages 14, 15. The valves may be doublebeat lift valves, as shown. In a modification, flap valves are employed. In this case a rectangular spring leaf 36, Fig. 8, secured by screws 46a, controls both discharge ports 23. The spring may carry rubber facings 36a.. Alternatively, or in addition, rubber valve seatings may be employed. Fig. 10 shows a pump applicable for pumping either liquids or gases. The discharge chamber 110 is arranged laterally, and is removable, the suction valves 106, 106<1> being accessible through the discharge ports 126. The suction valves may be lift valves, as shown, with rubber seatings 108. The pistons 101, 101<1> are single-acting, and work through stuffing- boxes 103, each containing two cup leathers. 104. The latter may have hard wearing surfaces with softer backings. The stuffing- boxes are supplied with lubricant through pipes 115, 117, 122 from a cylinder 141, the piston 113 of which is acted on by compressed air, supplied through a pipe 112 from a tank 111 into which the pump discharges. The tank 111 and the discharge valve chamber 110 contain water. When the apparatus is used as a compressor, water is supplied to the suction pipe 121 by means of a pipe 116, and an auxiliary suction valve controlled by the governor is employed.
