Abstract

626,682. Reciprocating pumps. ROTHERHAM & SONS, Ltd., and BOLTON, W. C. E. Dec. 23, 1946, No. 37651. [Class 102(i)] In a pump having a cylinder 16, Fig. 1, with intake and discharge ends 17, 18 and a piston 11 forming a partition between the cylinder ends and being reciprocated from end to end of the cylinder by a block 13 slidably guided in a chord-wise slot 12 of the piston and engaged by a driving crankpin 14, the block 13 coacts with the ends of two passages 22, 23, Fig. 3, in the piston 11 to afford communication between the slot 12 and the cylinder ends 17, 18 to provide a transfer valve means between the cylinder ends. The passages 22, 23 are unevenly disposed on the same side of the transverse centre line of the slot and passage 22 is fully closed by the block 13 during the major portion of the discharge stroke. In order that on the return stroke liquid may pass from the cylinder space on the inlet to that on the delivery side of the piston through the open passages 22, 23, the inlet bore 17a is of less diameter than the passages 22, 23 or of the discharge bore 18a. Non-return valves may be provided in the inlet and discharge ends of the cylinders. Specifications 264,297, [Class 102(i)], and 542,889, [Group XXIX], are referred to.
