Abstract
In a universal joint made by die-casting an alloy about a reinforcing stamped, forged, or cast insert, in some cases about inserts to serve as ball races, the body section of the joint may be a copper alloy containing 80-81,5 per cent of copper, 4-5 per cent of silicon, and 13,5-15 per cent of zinc, or a zinc alloy containing 4,1 per cent of aluminium and small quantities of other metals. The reinforcing inserts may be made of steel containing 0,15-0,25 per cent of carbon, 0,4-0,7 per cent of magnesium, 1,65-2 per cent of nickel, and 0,2-0,3 per cent of molybdenum. Steel inserts may be carburized at 1650-1700 DEG F. for 8 hours, quenched in oil from 1525 or 1500 DEG F., and annealed or normalized at 380 DEG F.
