[Class 126] In a convertible solid-fuel and gas or electric fireplace in which the electric or gas heating- elements d are movably mounted in recesses or cavities a<1> provided, for example, in the fireplace surround a, the arrangement is such that when the elements are moved to their service position in front of the solid-fuel grate b, the chimney opening b<1> is entirely closed so that the creation of a forced draught, with the consequent risk of rekindling a smouldering fire, is avoided. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the elements d are mounted on backings d<1> which are pivoted on vertical axes e and are tiled to match the surround a, these backings forming enclosures for the recesses a<1> when the elements are swung into their out-of-service positions. Fig. 5 shows a construction in which the elements d are housed in a recess a<1> above the chimney opening b<1>, the tiled backing d<1>, in this case, being horizontally hinged at f so that it may be swung downwardly through 180‹ to a position in which it completely closes the opening b<1>. Struts g may be provided for retaining the elements d in a horizontal position when it is desired to use them for cooking purposes. Fig. 7 shows a further modification in which the elements d are accommodated, when not in use, in a recess a' in the tiled hearth. Constructions are described in which the pivots for the movable elements are so formed that the supply of current or gas thereto is automatically turned on and off when the elements are moved to their service and out-ofservice positions respectively.
