Open fireplaces; guards.-The tiled surrounds of fireplaces with barless grates are protected by a pair of vertical shields 9 in the immediate vicinity of the grate front. The shields are preferably of metal, and may be attached to, integral with, or independendent of, the grate front; their rear edges may abut on shoulders formed on the firebrick cheeks of the fireplace, and they may be formed to provide an air space between them and the tiling, as shown in Fig. 3. The shields may be let into the tiling, and be provided with frogs or other projections or recesses for keying into the cement, and, in order to allow for expansion, each shield may be made in abutting or overlapping sections, or with portions of reduced thickness. The top portion 11<b> of the firebrick cheek is preferably bevelled off, as shown, in order that the shoulder 11<a> may not project beyond the tiles above the cheeks and so detract from the appearance of the fireplace.
