934,214. Fire back heat deflectors. R. V. BAKER. April 11, 1961 [April 29, 1960], No. 15047/60. Class 126. A fire back heat deflector for an open fireplace comprises a fire clay element 1 with a substantially plane upper surface 5, a rear face 4 for fitting against the fire back, side faces 2 and 3 for fitting against the fireplace cheeks, and a lower surface having a convex central portion 7 and concave outer portions 8, the lower surface being at approximately 45 degrees to the fire back and at approximately 40 degrees to the upper surface 5. A downwardly dependent lip 6 is provided at the front of the deflector. The deflector is fitted by screwing, riveting or rabbeting at a position between the burning fuel on the grate and the top of the fireplace surround opening preferably so that its lower edge is about 15 inches above the base of the fire back and the fronts of the side faces 2 and 3 are set back about ] ¢ inches from the front of the grate.
